Today I went for a contact lens appointment... they would not even give me a firm price for the exam, other than it will be over $400+... and we will tell you what the final cost is going to be after the exam. The last time I had a contact lens exam at this practice the cost was $254. At $400, it is a 57% increase from my last eye exam three years ago. When I questioned the huge increase, I was told that Dr. Tupps kept his prices the same forever and that he did not charge enough. When I shared that that's a 20% increase per year, they again said he didn't charge enough. I left. Called another local eye doctor. My total eye exam cost, including contacts, was $215... Which they quoted me upfront. Within an hour I had my contact lens prescription and saved at least $185. We will not be back. They lost me as a customer. They also lost my husband as a customer. When I used to go to Dr. Tupps the waiting room was always packed. Today I walked into an empty, waiting room... Now I know why.

Every visit ends up being hours long, planned for that today. But this was going to be all day and not be able to get glasses which is the whole point of the visit. Why wouldn't you call the patients scheduled and explain the situation? People take time off work. It's just a bit disrespectful of people's time and effort. I was contacted by the office after this review. Appreciate that and the explanation of the unfortunate timeline of events. I have bumped this up a star (ok) but overall my experience was still what it was. I explained that this is an experience of over 10+yrs of my wife and I as patients. I was told the practice no longer operated as it once did which is great but not reflected the day of my visit. Willing to give them another chance and again appreciate them reaching out to me.

I ordered some reading glasses and the more mature lady in the front who apparently has issues, showed me a few frames that I didn't like. I asked if there were more and she told me to look in a drawer. I did and found a pair marked at $99. I tried them on and said I liked them and when I handed them to her, she pulled them into the pile. I was worried that she might mix them up, but since there was some friction between us already that day I hoped she would take the right ones for my order. When I picked up my glasses, they had the wrong frames and were aweful looking. I told her they were the wrong frames, and she said they were the right frames and there was nothing that could be done about it, but "that's quite a fashion statement you're making." The frames listed on my invoice were priced at $110, eleven dollars more then the ones I ordered. I asked for the doctor to call so we could resolve this, and instead she sent me a long and rather rude email ending in: "Surely you can appreciate why I cannot return every phone call made to the office, I am busy with scheduled patients like yourself". Well, yes doctor C. you do call when there's an issue like this, that's basic customer service.

I was later told this is a new location for them but still, everything looked brand new and unused. The very friendly receptionist told me that since I have a Medicare Advantage plan, it was best to make 2 appointments as one thing I needed was covered with Advantage Vision Insurance and another basic Medicare. The rules state they can't bill for both in one visit. No one has ever mentioned that before and it saved me $. After about a 2 minute wait, a tech came and got me. Started with the basic eye exam. Much more thorough than any I have had before. Techs did all the work then had me wait for the optometrist who went over everything, checked it and answered all my questions. I saw Dr. Liffland who came across as a bit of an ice queen but was amazingly patient, smart and informative. She took time to pull out of me any questions I might have. Then it was back to make another appointment for a about 2 weeks in the future. That was for a macular degeneration scan. Again, 2 minute wait before being checked out by several techs then taken into an office to see Dr. Liffland. Again, amazingly informative. I was first diagnosed with age related macular degeneration a least a decade ago so this was not my first rodeo with the procedure. Again, this time was more in depth and comprehensive than I have ever had before. Again, Dr. Liffland patiently pried me for questions or concerns and was truly informative and reassuring. She asked me if I wanted to do contacts and I told her I was unsure and she told me I need to tell her in that moment. I was very caught off guard by how rude her tone as if she was annoyed that I came to the doctor to learn more information, as I've never done contacts before. I told her no in the moment, then she gave me paperwork to fill out. I filled everything out and she asked if I wanted to look at frames I said no because I want to keep my frame and just replace the lenses. From this point on she was speaking in a very condescending and fake sweet tone calling me sweetheart. I also told her I wanted to get a pair of prescription sunglasses and asked if I could apply my insurance credit to the sunglasses. She told me yes that would be fine. I explained I had questions about contacts and asked if I decided later to do the contacts if I could get them another time. She said no because you'll have to do your exam today. I declined then since I didn't want to decide in that moment. Then while I was signing the consent forms, she was talking out each section as I was meant to sign. When I was trying to read the information she had her hand on the paper while I was trying to read it to explain everything that I was signing, not allowing me enough time to read it and pressuring me to just sign it without reading. I was overwhelmed and again caught off guard, but decided to let it go. I had an exam with the Doctor who was great no complaints. I asked her as well if I could apply my credit for the sunglasses and she said yes also. I then got out to the sales floor picked out a pair of sunglasses and was told it would be $400 for the sunglasses alone. I asked about the credit I have for my insurance and it was explained that I was only able to use that on one pair of glasses. When I explained that I just wanted the lens changed in my regular pair, they told me I would have to get a new frame from my regular glasses. Also, I can't get two pairs and apply the insurance credit. It would only be if I were to get a new pair of regular glasses. So they told me I was not able to apply my insurance that I have for a frame and lenses on the sunglasses when I just wanted new lenses in the frame I already have for my daily pair. I was upset as I was told by two different people, the doctor and Patty at the front that I was able to apply the credit to sunglasses. I ended up leaving very overwhelmed based on my experience from the moment I walked through the door. I have no complaints about anybody else in that office aside from Patty at the front desk. I understand the sales associate I was speaking with was just doing her job to the best of her ability. I was unfortunately given incorrect information prior. It is very unprofessional to act in such a condescending manor towards clients, and again it was from the moment that I walked up to the front desk. I was very respectful towards everybody in the office, and everybody was very respectful to me aside from Patty. I heard her also talking with a coworker, who I assume was the doctor in a back room saying that "now she is crying because she couldn't afford anything". I hope you look into her specifically I am not sure if it was racism or what as I am a person of color. I find it extremely disappointing that this is how somebody of her age treats clients while she is working in her position.
