A wonderful company run by wonderful people. My boyfriend and I have been looking to get him an Embody chair for his home setup (work and gaming) for forever! I was scouring used ads for a week, back hurting all the while, and realized I needed to put my butt in some seats to decide. I saw some decent prices and inquired via their website. Bob called me the next day, he was personable and knowledgeable. The 7-day cash and 30-day store credit return policy, plus the 1-year warranty, were enough for me to get off Craigslist and drive said butt San Mateo. A Better Source is awesome! It's a brilliant business idea, first of all. As usual, let's start with parking: It's super easy! There is a large lot and there are 3 specifically reserved spaces for A Better Source immediately in front of the store, but the 2 times I have come here there have literally been 100 parking space options so I do not anticipate this ever being an issue. The inside of the store is, let's face it, overwhelming. I suppose the organization could be a little better but it seems they have done the best they can in the space they have. It's clearly sorted by desks/chairs (chairs subsorted by designer/manufacturer), then other office furniture that they have. Be prepared--it's like thousands of chairs. It is a sea of chairs. It's pretty cool really. The building is sort of janky but not in a creepy way, and I don't know how to explain it better than that. I recommend knowing what you're looking for at least generally before coming (you can also order online and just come for pickup), but the sales associates are super friendly and helpful in getting you what you're needing. If you're moving to a more work from home situation this is the place to be for your setup! I needed to upgrade my WFH setup and KNEW I wanted a Steelcase chair that is over a grand new, and I got it here for $350--in awesome condition! I also got a beautiful height adjustable desk that retails for over a grand (like well over it seems) for $450, also in awesome condition. How they acquire their items (from what I was told during my first visit): Offices like Verizon, etc who are either replacing their furniture, downsizing, etc have a LOT of furniture they are no longer using so they sell it to places like this. The warehouse of A Better Source then professionally cleans the items and they then can sell it to people like me for a price I can reasonably justify without a call from my accountant. A note: They will help you take your item to your vehicle and appear to offer shipping as well. You can also pick up online orders in the store if you'd like! They also offer bulk discounts for large order (not like 2 desks, but like if you're furnishing a bigger office). They have name brands you want like Steelcase, Herman Miller, Allsteel (this exhausts the brands I know for office furniture) and every item I have seen has been in proper working order. They also offer a 7 day money back guarantee, 30 day store credit return offer, and 1 year warranty for items should they become defective. I'm so glad I found this place (thanks reddit!) They have a huge selection of high-end office chairs; many "used" but in like-new condition. Hundreds upon hundreds of chairs, perfect for finding one that works for your body! There was a good number of desks as well, though I didn't explore that side of the store. They also replace hydraulic pumps, maybe other repairs as well. All the inventory listed on the website seemed to be available and more. Older models and less popular colors had the steepest discounts. Used chairs can be returned for a full discount within 7 days, store credit within 30 days. New chairs are only returnable for 60% of the price within 7 days; plenty of lightly used inventory though. I picked up an older model Steelcase Think for my home office, pristine condition and fully loaded for just $200 (normally retails for around $1000). Wow!! The service afterwards was even better - the chair that was delivered was faulty (kept dropping), and they delivered / replaced it within days. I was really hoping to find a new (to me) chair or a new (to me) desk. But Better Source did not end up being within the price range I was looking for. The service was friendly and welcoming, but the prices were showroom prices. They aren't really a liquidator (used furniture at great prices) but more like a Ross. Brand new items left in storage that didn't sell at higher end retail establishments. There were a few desks I liked ($165 tag), but in the end I ended up finding something on Craigslist for $35 dollars I was happy with. And as nice as the service was, I was used to Hotel Furniture Liquidators in San Jose (now located in Stockton) that had items priced to sell with a $50 same day delivery charge. I am zero for two with this place. A few years back I bought a used office chair. Within a 6 months, one of the wheels was broken. Now the function that raises or lowers the seat is gone as well - it just sinks to the bottom. It was a used chair, so perhaps I should expect this. Point is, there's no free lunch, a used chair is used. Not their fault, but not very satisfying either. Second time, I never got in to the store. The store has a pretty tight limit on numbers of customers at a time due to Covid. I watched for 15 minutes while people tried to check out their purchase, but somehow there was a lot of talk but no action. I'd think someone was going to exit shortly after a credit card was exchanged, but that didnt result in wrapping up the process. The employee spent a ton of time looking at his screen. When I left there were still people trying to pay. I didnt have a hour to spend on getting a chair, and that's how long it was starting to look. Ultimately, this is a business to business store, that does retail on the side. Be aware that there's no prices on the items, and for whatever reason executing the sale is akin to completing a tax return. read more

I needed to update a conference room in our facility and needed 16 chairs. I went to BetterSource because the website showed so many to choose from. Upon arriving I noticed there was absolutely no other customers in the store. I told the salesman that I was looking for leather back chairs. He replied he didn't have any before noticing he had a few in the back. Instead of asking more questions to see if he could help with an alternate, he went straight to the cubicle in the front of the store and in the 25 min I was in the store, never said another word to me. I had to literally move chairs around myself. As I was about to leave after spending 25 min alone, I asked the price on one chair (to do the math x16) just to see if he would be willing to help. NOPE! From his cubicle chair, he looked around the corner at the chair for a few seconds then said, "ummm $350.00". WIAT- WHAT- for a used chair?? I realized he was not going to be helpful, so as I headed to the door it was clear he was going to let me leave without so much as a "thanks for stopping by". So I stopped and asked him if he had a business card. He said yes and pointed to a stack on the desk. I grabbed one and left. Still nothing in the way of "did you see anything you like?", Nope, just let a potentially large sale on used chairs walk right out the door. The name of the card was Bob Callaway "Sales and Design Consultant" (that's funny). I thought the entire experience was atypical for a sales consultant, but it may explain why the place was void of customers. I would not recommend wasting time at this business. read more

Better Source Liquidators is a family owned business built from the ground up. While their current business is primarily with companies, the owner and staff still took the time to help me find 2 very high quality used office chairs, had them steam cleaned and offered to give them a good wipe down (which I declined because I could do it myself), all while it was very obvious their loading dock was busy with much larger orders than mine. Part of the responsibility as a responsible customer supporting a family owned businesses in the Bay Area, especially the Bay Area, is to be conscious of the fact that every minute they spent on my $100 purchase for 2 chairs that normally would cost me $1K+tax, takes away from their ability to close a deal and/or deliver on larger business that enabled them to grow to where they are today.
