Overall, our experience with Better Built Basements was Very Stressful, Very Frustrating and Very Disappointing. Specifically, the Owner, Jim Tranmer and his Mangement Team were Rude, Inconsiderate, and offered ZERO Customer Care. They failed on numerous occasions to follow their own work schedule inconveniecing both my wife and myself. When we called to complain to Mr. Tranmer, he refused to take our phone calls and basically told us "since we had signed a contract granting them access to our home 7 days a week, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. that we should just stop complaining and just let them do their job." In our opinion, Mr. Tranmer is basically an Ungrateful Bully. Thankfully, Jake Barnett, their Project Manager stepped in and helped to guide the project forward and helped save the job. Good Job by Jake who was able to usher the project forward to a successful conclusion! The workers and subcontractors who actually did the Hard Work were actually very kind and very respectful and ultimately did a Very Good Job of Finishing out our Basement. read more

I was pretty happy with the work until I got this response so instead of focusing on the good, I'll just add this email communication so you know what you're in for. It speaks enough for itself. He can reject all he wants but all of my concerns have been looked into and dealt with. There was no need for rudeness. At the inspection his people quoted me $2000 to fix the panel that just needed a little manual manipulation and cost me $75 from another electrician. Better Built Basements (BBB) produced a finished basement based upon the terms agreed upon, completing the work in early February 2019 before the scheduled completion date. All the workers assigned to the job (in excess of 15) did an excellent job! A special thanks to Frankie, Will, Arkeya, Jose and Mike for the detailed work they provided. During the process however, in dealing with the owner, Jim Tramner, he was disrespectful, arrogant, threatening and clearly focused on money versus customer relations. He misadvised about work that didn't need to be done and challenged me about an issue where her was clearly wrong. Better Built Basements LLC renovated my basement this past summer, installing a full bathroom, bedroom (with egress window), office and finished common area. The project went very smoothly, with great communication and follow-up. Just about everything was done to spec and on the correct timeline. At the beginning of the project we were provided a schedule, and they met almost every milestone; the entire project was completed on time, including pulling the necessary permits and passing all town inspections. We had a few change orders during the project, and they were able to work them in and still complete the project within the original time frame. The communication was phenomenal. For each phase of the project we knew who was coming to the house when, who would be in charge if there was any issue, and who we could escalate to if there were concerns. We just had our basement family room refurbished with recessed lighting, new vinyl flooring and the barnboard painted. This company was wonderful to work with. On time as promised, totally professional and competent workmen, paid attention to detail, and overall did a fabulous job. Better Built Basements (BBB) was not the least expensive of the three contractors to quote my basement renovation job. But they came with positive reviews from Angie's list and others. Overall the the finished product is as expected, but the job was punctuated with periods of miscommunication, arrogance, disrespect and, after the job was completed and a problem occurred with the electric panel set up, denial of responsibility and an irrational and emotional response from the president of the company to a problem they created. The main problem started after the job was completed.... The final sign off occurred on April 30, 2015. The job, as I mentioned, was fine overall and they delivered what we expected. On Thursday, May 21, three weeks after the BBB job was completed, I turned on our central air conditioner for the first time this season. One of the units was not blowing cold air, so I scheduled a service call with my local HVAC contractor for Thursday, May 28. The contractor arrived, took a look at the AC coils and tried to turn on the unit. There was no power. He inspected the electrical panel (which was re-positioned and re-wired by BBB as part of the basement job) and asked us if the panel was new. When we said "yes," he asked if a licensed electrician did the job. When we asked why, he said that the AC unit was wired incorrectly and needed to be remedied ASAP. The cost from my AC contractor for uncovering the BBB electrical mistake was $280. This is the email I sent to BBB on May 28... "One of my air conditioner units was not working, so I called [my AC contractor] to check it out. After taking a look at the AC unit, he went to the electrical panel. He informs me that the panel was wired incorrectly and needs to be re-wired with a new breaker for the AC unit. He stated that it is a hazard. Can your electrician call [my AC contractor] ... to discuss the issue and solve it today? I'd hate to see this turn into am unsafe issue. Thank you." BBB responded quickly and sent an electrician to fix the problem. I sent the following message to BBB... "Can you guys please consider paying the bill from the AC company?. Turns out the only thing wrong with the AC was the electric hook up." BBB's response? A terse... . "We don't cover outside contractors." Their reasoning was that I "should have called them first" when the AC was not working. Using this logic, I should call BBB when any electrical device in the house is not working properly, expecting that it could be from poor wiring in the new BBB-installed electric panel. I believe BBB does quality work, but inept management and the lack of a customer-centric perspective may make the experience painful. Interestingly, when I mentioned that if he cannot pay me the $280 HVAC cost that I would share the story via social media, he saw that as a 'threat," and said that he does not respond to threats. read more

Basement Remodel It is hard to know where to begin in describing our experience with Better Built Basements. From start to finish, I have never had a better experience with a company. There are three things that I believe set Better Built Basements apart from other businesses: the people, the quality of the work, and the value. Our project consisted of installing a family room, bedroom, and bathroom in our unfinished basement. During the five weeks it took to complete this project, I lost count of the number of people who were involved and I can only remember a few of their names. However, what I do remember is the polite, professional, and respectful manner of each and every BBB employee. The work crews arrived on time, left on time, and left the work area cleaned at the end of the day. Everyone from management to the skilled laborers made themselves available to answer my questions, explain things, and address any concerns. And this may sound like a small thing, but everyone looked me in the eye when speaking with me. I never felt rushed or dismissed or that my requests were unimportant. I felt respected and valued as a customer and as a human being. Regarding the quality of the work, I can only describe it as exceptional. BBB has specialized teams, including people who are responsible for framing, dry-walling, painting, flooring, finish work, electrical, and so on. These are skilled, competent people who take pride in their work. Only high quality products were used in our project, many of which are specifically designed for basement installations. As I am something of a perfectionist, I can almost always find something that needs improvement or correction. However, at the time of completion, there was not a single problem or issue that needed to be addressed. As far as value, BBB's estimate was similar to others we received from other reputable contractors. We selected BBB because we felt that what they had to offer in terms of expertise, service, and experience made them the right fit for us. From our initial consultation with the designer (Robert), during which we spent hours coming up with the perfect design for our space, until the final walk through, our experience was virtually seamless. And thanks to the production manager (Jake) and the office manager (Kaitlyn), communication throughout the process was clear, timely, and uncomplicated. The project proceeded exactly on schedule and was completed within the projected time frame. This is a company that clearly knows exactly what they are doing. And although they have probably done hundreds of projects like ours, I never had the feeling that this was "just another basement" for them. From the moment we signed our contract until the day of completion, our experience with BBB was outstanding. I cannot recommend them more highly. read more

I am beyond delighted with my experience with BBB. I had originally decided to have a small basement bathroom done and what I received was better than I could have imagined. it is a true "powder room" which I would not be embarrassed to have company use. It is designed exactly how I wanted it in spite of the fact that I had no idea what I wanted. I also had my upstairs bathroom done which needed a gut job. All of the workmen involved were very timely, organized, pleasant, and considerate of my cats. I actually caught one of them asking one of my cats if she was happy with how the bathroom was coming along. They arrived on time, on schedule and left after cleaning up after themselves. I was given a schedule of how things were going to happen and that schedule became reality. It made things so much easier to know when things were going to happen. it is somewhat amazing to me how quickly the main bathroom was done considering what it looked like after the first day they were there! I would without hesitation recommend them to anyone and certainly would use them again in the future. I could not be happier with the job, the people, the overall common courtesy in working with me and my family. My only problem is that my short showers have turned into a much longer time so I can admire that bathroom that I can not believe is mine! read more
