One of my favorite local businesses! Their clothes are higher quality my son is extremely particular about how things feel. Many of the beach shops sell low quality items at top dollar prices to cater to The Tourist. Bethany surf shop that sells quality products at the same price you can buy junk for the difference is how well their product holds up and how cozy the merchandise remains we love this spot! Katie, our guide, was amazing--gave great instruction, made us comfortable as we learned, kept two teens engaged(!) and pointed out cool things in the canal as we paddled. Terrible service, overpriced and rude. I went in with my daughters. They picked out hoodies and we went to the register to pay. The hoodie was 34.95 - I asked if they would take $30 for it and the lady behind the counter rudely replied with an attitude "I'll take 34.95" . We won't be back - not that the workers would notice. I purchased a black long sleeve rash guard while on vacation. I was asking for help from the young female cashier and had a question about the sizing and cuts of the rash guard and she was very rude and looked at me like i was dumb for asking a question. When checking out, she took the shirt off the hanger and a piece broke off and bounced off my clavicle and landed in my wallet. I was very shocked, but didn't mind too much as things like this can happen but she did not even acknowledge this incident. After taking my shirt home and wearing it one time, I ended up washing it and was thoroughly disappointed by its appearance after a single wash. The entire bethany surf shop logo has faded and is now practically gone. This is disappointing as I purchased it specifically for this logo. read more

This review is for rental of sup at the outlet location on 7 town road. Came here to rent stand-up paddle boards. Couldn't have asked for better service. Since we were new to the area they gave us tips on where to go. The shop is located on the Assawoman Canal. The staff setup the paddleboards in the water, provided quick instructions (it was our 2nd time doing sup.), and we were on our way. Great access to Salt Pond. Along the way we saw crabs and other sea life. Rates are awesome. $15th for 2 hours, $25 from 10 to 5, and they have multiple day rentals. If you want to start at another point, they'll provide you with bungee cords and pad to transport paddle boards. They also provide life vest and paddle at no additional fee. Bottomline: easy rental, access to waterway, cheap, rates, super friendly and helpful staff. Tip: their website says sup tours start at 9. Shop opens at 10 and that's when rentals begin. read more

Been surfing for a couple years. My family has a place in Bethany so I decided to check out the local shop. Cute little store and I grabbed a few shirts. The selection is ok but the service was not very good. Not that anyone was mean or rude they were all just very disinterested in the customers. I asked a few questions and made some small talk about the surf but didn't get much of a response. Everyone just seemed miserable. I was going to get a board there but decide not to because of the vibe. The shirts I got were cool and I got a few necklaces but nothing major. The shirts did shrink some after I washed them but they are cotton so I expected it and sized up. Just not the friendly fun vibe I get from the other shops. Maybe it will be better this year. This review is for the SUP rental location. My husband and I did the SUP tour with Katie and had an amazing time. They start with a quick demo and then you're off on the canal. Katie was patient and very nice; we were doing this for the first time and I fell twice!! She was knowledgeable and provided tips for beginners. We had a great time! $30 per person gets you an hour guided tour on the canal, SUP and oar use, and quick instruction. At the end they gave us a t-shirt!!! The Bethany Surf Shop t-shirt is a summer staple that I come back for every single time I'm back in Bethany. They have a wide variety of designs and t-shirt styles as well as baseball caps, shorts, sweatpants, and sweatshirts. The prices are a bit high and the shirts develop holes and wear and tear after a few wash cycles, but that's what you get in a touristy beach town shop. They also have a nice variety of swimwear in the corner as well as some men's and women's beach-casual clothing, and a bunch of other small handmade casual-beach style accessories (bracelets, necklaces, etc) that are great to give as gifts or to buy for yourself. The location is conveniently located next to two of the main Bethany ice cream shops and right upstairs above the book store. The kids who work there have never given me any problems and I think they do a great job as sales associates. Most of them are very nice and greet you as you walk in the door, which is as much as they should do, considering some consumers don't like being hassled by sales associates. If you're looking for a piece of clothing to remember your stay in Bethany by, stop by this shop! read more

Went to their Ocean View location with my family to do a standup paddle board tour. It was our first time and Katie was a great guide and made the trip fun and interesting. We almost cancelled because of the extreme heat but we went in the canal which is shaded and cooler than expected. Recommend them and Katie highly for any excursion. read more

I've been coming to Bethany Beach for 35 years since my first trip with my church as a middle schooler. We have a house in Bethany and have vacationed here every year for the last 16 years. We likely spend $800 to $1000 a year at the surf shop, and have been good customers. That ends today. My son saved his umpiring money and bought a Herlihy board at the end of last summer. Yesterday was the third day he used the board. We heard a large crack while riding and a wave breaking hit him. The board is no longer rideable by standing on it but could be used as a boogie board - board has a bend in it. We went and talked to the owner who was defensive and downright rude. Not looking for a refund - just a replacement. Or maybe some compassion and understanding - or a discount or suggestion of giving us a used board.... something. Not to accuse us of trying to "take" them. We're talking about a 15 year old kid and his dad. We didn't raise our voice. We'll vote with our wallet by never going there again. Neither will any of our family that has houses here. That will be at least 17 of us. We hope you don't go there either. Sad. End of a 35+ year run going there, but K-Coast, Atlantic Shoals, and Breakers will more than do the trick for our family. read more

Do not buy a thing from this place unless you enjoy being ripped off! We purchased a $300 Herlihy board a few years ago, and after the first 2 months, the bottom corner started to peel up. We took the board back and after several discussions with various employees, they offered to repair it. The repair was sub par and only held for about a week. The pee finally got so bad, the board was unusable, so for our son's birthday this year, we got him another Herlihy board. Well, we should've learned our lesson.......$300 and three weeks later, the corner has begun to peel! We have been EXTRA careful to not sit this board on the side, and always carry it, but this still happened!! We immediately took the board to Bethany Surf Shop, and showed them what had happened and told them we had only had the board for about three weeks. They asked him if he skims with the board, (which he absolutely doesn't), but even though we said "no he doesn't", the employee said that that's basically the only way that happens (so she basically called me a liar!). Then another employee looked at the board and said "well you can see all the scratches on the board".....ummmmmmm.....duh.....the beach has SAND which the board touches when you ride a wave in. Finally, after all that, I asked if they were going to at least repair the board, to which she then offered to SELL me some glue to fix it myself!!!!!! SERIOUSLY?! I just bought a board from them three weeks ago!!!!!!! What a joke!!! Then to make matters worse, the other employee told us that unfortunately the boards aren't very great quality anymore because they are made out of the country now. GOOD TO KNOW......I wish they would've told me they were selling me a crap quality board BEFORE I shelled out my money to them! NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!! They have lost my business forever. Colin Herlihy should be embarrassed by the way this business is representing him. I am extremely disappointed. ***RESPONSE TO Sheila of Bethany Surf Shop's response below. As you can clearly see from Sheila's response, this company is lacking basic principles of even mediocre customer service. To bring everyone up to date, I did receive a call from the owner yesterday offering to repair the board and even explained how I could could go about contacting Toobs Boards in California to possibly replace the board if needed. I was hoping for a good outcome with this solution and follow up, and was planning on updating my review once a resolution was made. Sheila, again called me a liar in her response (i.e. "abusive riding"). If a $300 board can't handle 7 days of use during the 3 weeks he had the board of riding in waves......then you can decide if it's something you want to spend your money on. In response to Sheila stating that I have a "history of writing bad reviews".........all I can say is, I only waste my time writing reviews for companies that waste my time, and........this review is 1 of 2 reviews I've ever written!!!! Lol. Good try Sheila! Sadly, I did have a glimmer of hope yesterday after taking with the owner, in getting this issue resolved. Unfortunately as everyone can see in Sheila's response, this company treats customers very badly, so I will handle matters differently at this point. Sad that treating customers kindly, and with respect, and using the old adage of "The customer is always right" is not part of their work ethic. Shop here at your own risk. And Sheila, you may want to read the other Yelp reviews that state your company's employees are judgmental and rude, and take some notes on that!
