This is the well kept secret store, maybe not so much, that I am becoming to love more and more! This visit I found probably the hottest pimento cheese made by M& C which has Carolina reaper peppers. This being my favorite brand of pimento cheese, I had to buy both of them then family member came and tried it and said that it was perfect so it will be on my list each time I visit. They also have beautiful heirloom, beef, steak, and other types of tomatoes that are sweet and juicy so I don't think I'll ever buy tomatoes from the regular supermarket ever again unless I can't get to this store. I was also able to find a good deal on local honey for less than $10. Not to mention if you are a beer drinker, they have an amazing wall of anything that you would want to find as a craft drink. Quaint and hipster neighborhood grocer. Offers a retro feel to grocery shopping you don't find in chain markets. I was in the area after work and needed some items for dinner. Fresh veggies were on my list and I found what I was looking for, carrots and broccoli. I also picked up some pasta, all of this for under $5 . The cashier was very nice. She had no problem waiting while I ran back down the aisle for a forgotten item. If you're a craft beer lover, this is your place. They have the widest selection of craft beers I know of in the Triad. I'm not a drinker so I'm sure there are bigger. Overall, definitely worth a visit. read more

Everything is very expensive, and it seems like the amount of shoppers has steadily decreased over the last couple of months. The freezers and fridges often break down (like once a month) so frozen or refrigerated foods are sometimes not kept at the correct temp. They recently got a new wine cooler for the really expensive wines though, so if you can't afford groceries, but are interested in a $900 bottle of wine, this is the place for you. Owners can occasionally be found inside, all though they never help the cashiers out during rushes. Overall worth a trip out if you like beer or wine, but it seems like the owners forgot that they're running a local grocery store that a lot of people rely on for everyday trips. Hands down the best beer selection in the triad! Bestway has been a staple in Greensboro for a long time. Before I moved to Asheville it was my go to spot for craft beer. They have a wonderful selection based on any preferences. They carry some of the best local IPAs including quite a few from Burial and Brewery Bhavana. Recently I started drinking more seltzers and I found a brand that's not too sweet with unique flavors. Florida Seltzer by Untitled Art. Bestway is the only place I've been able to find this brand of seltzer. Pro tip, try the citrus yuzu! It's soooooo delicious! read more

Bestway has been a place I would go for harder to get beers for years. Even though I live in a very beer driven city in a state hours away I would still come through Bestway. I stop here a couple times a year on the way back North with beer that I cannot find in Columbus Ohio, OH. This trip was very disappointing. It seems that something has indeed happened to Bestway. The beer clout seems fizzled. It is mid December but I found (early) spring releases still on the shelves. Things that should have been clearanced out months back. Lavender saisons in December? Nah dude. When I asked the folks working about the seasonals that should have been on shelves (basically to see if I had already missed them) I was told point blank that they were having distribution problems. (Also that this was their part time job and they were unsure about the beers.) When I inquired about NC wines that they might have in stock the person at the register told me that they knew nothing about the alcohol in the store. Weird right? The reason I keep coming to Bestway is the collection of beer that they have and until this point it had been because of the beer aware staff.  Will I go out of my way to get to Bestway when I am swinging through GSO? Probably not. I was able to find more in season/next season beers at Total Wine. It stinks to not feel like supporting this (possible former) mainstay of beer in Greensboro but Bestway has definitely shifted. read more

I've heard this is the number one beer store in the state. It's my go to for their huge selection of beer. Go in and turn left then hit aisle 7. I can't say much about the grocery aspect as I've never perused the other parts of the store. The only reason it gets 4 stars and not 5 is because I've never had a friendly cashier. I've never had a hateful one either but it just seems like they are there for one job and don't really care if you shop there or not. So head on by and be amazed at the beer selection. read more

My boyfriend and I came in on a Sunday evening (9/29) not aware of that they closed at 10. We walked in at 9:58. As soon as we walked in, the lady at the front desk yelled out, "THE STORE CLOSES IN TWO MINUTES!" It was incredibly rude and unwelcoming. Instead of quickly selecting some beer, the whole reason to visit this place, we felt as if we were being kicked out of the door. We both have worked in retail and service industry. We understand the frustrations of customers at closing time. However, if I had ever done that on the job - I would have been fired. Because of this experience, we will not be returning to this establishment. Next time I suggest you kindly let customers know of closing time, as we would have very quick and polite. read more

Really great place for beer, craft and foreign, and maybe some ice cream from the large selection in their frozen food area - but not so much for real "grocery" items, except for an emergency item now and again. Picked up 2 nice German beers, and a Polish one I like - only place in town I've found them. What seemed like a cute little neighborhood store at first but I bought a large package of ballpark hotdogs and once I got home realized that the tamperproof seal had been opened! Also extremely convenient for college students who never have time to go grocery shopping. It has a decent selection for groceries, works perfectly for a small grocery trip. Awful grocery store. Everyone who works here is always in a bad mood and gives you dirty looks. Everyone who works here should be fired. Rude to customers and they will yell at you from across the store. This has happened multiple times and they have continued to lose customers due to this. Multiple people I know have walked in and walked out due to how rude the service is. DO NOT GO HERE!!! If your bologna has a first name, and it's O-S-C-A-R, then you might be a college student (Who am I kidding? That shit's expensive. Gwaltney's your brand). If your mother has a bumper sticker that reads, "My child and my money go to UNCG," then there's a good chance that you may become well-acquainted with Bestway. Coming from the now defunct Bi-Rite family of stores in the early '70s, Bestway became one of the more popular local grocery chains around Greensboro, with locations at Golden Gate, Phillips and Summit Avenues at US-29, Asheboro Street (now MLK), Summit Shopping Center, and this one - a former A&P - among others. That popularity was short-lived, though, as larger supermarkets became the norm and the deluxe neighborhood grocers were forgotten, and by the time I was entering my teens and spending a lot more time around UNCG in the '90s, only the Walker Avenue location remained (you can still see the faint lettering of "BESTWAY" on the western wall of the former Phillips Avenue location). Interesting fact: the former Lawndale location - I can't recall whether it was a Bestway or had remained a Bi-Rite - became the very first Fresh Market. This remaining Bestway underwent a transformation over the years, thanks to its location in the heart of the Lindley Park/Brice Street neighborhoods at Walker and Elam, just a mile from the UNCG campus. Although most of the store is still devoted to typical grocery items, at typical neighborhood grocer prices (perhaps 10-25% more than you'll pay at Harris Teeter), the defining characteristic of Bestway has become its selection of the nectar of the nitwit. Now, when you begin your transition into college life, the Ale-ing Wall will be an imposing beast, indeed. You're just 17 or 18, so you've spent the past 2-4 years getting wasted on PBR, Milwaukee's Best, and whatever the homeless man picked up from the gas station with the $8.57 you and your buddies scrounged together and handed to him (most likely some MD or OE), not to mention countless 10 parts liquor to 1 part everything else concoctions involving Gordon's or Bacardi. But a funny thing will happen one day during your second semester as you're sitting with all your friends in some guy's dorm, with a towel stuffed into the crack under the door, the window open, and you're drinking a can of Icehouse and watching them blow bong hits into a paper towel roll stuffed with Snuggle sheets (when they're not blowing them into the face of the pet ferret, Nigel, that his roommate has somehow managed to keep in the dorm for more than 4 months). You'll start to wonder whether there isn't more to college life. You'll finish that beer and stand for the first time in more than an hour, and you'll wander out of the building in search of... something. Heading west along Walker, you reach a corner and stand there for a while, and as you're staring at that big red hand, you think it starts talking to you. A moment later, you realize it's the slightly older chap with a legendary beard standing beside you who's making conversation. His name is Brent or Dexter or some uncommon shortening of Christopher, and he asks where you're headed. Out of reflex, you ask if he knows where you can get some good beer. In your mind, your question signified a search for some Newcastle or Red Stripe, but to your barbate new friend, thoughts of Cuvee Van De Keizer and Two Hearted Ale are aroused. His reply: "Have you been to Bestway?" And so begins an education of another sort; one which involves your professors only insomuch as a few of them join you at this or that gathering, where you engage in discussions regarding the walkability score of each person's neighborhood, or on the philosophical conflicts at play during the Gene Deitch years of Tom & Jerry, while sipping Belgian brews from special glasses. If your Brent never comes along and you find yourself doubting the words of a Yelper who's been essentially a teetotaler since sixteen, Bestway has laminated cards for many of their brews, with details and scores from RateBeer, to assist in your decision, as well as a knowledgeable staff to help you find what you're looking for the next time you decide your trip to the store for chips, ramen and Vienna sausages should also include something new and interesting on the beer front. Avoid the meat and poultry. There are better meat markets around. Drive SLOWLY entering and exiting the parking lot, unless you really hate your bumper. read more

What happened to Bestway? Its Wall of Beer and knowledgeable staff have been a staple of mine for a decade. The last 2 times I visited, the staff couldn't tear themselves away from their private conversation. When they did, they were surly and not helpful. And the selection? Best neighborhood/corner grocery store...generally has what I need...including a few local things, like goat cheese from Goat Lady Dairy or milk and ice cream from Homeland Creamery. Great beer, a whole wall of it, covering a whole side of an isle in the store (which only has about 7 isles...) The beer comes from nearly everywhere, and is all different types. They keep an employee just for beer info, to help you try something new, and so on, since there's so much, and it's always so tempting to get what you KNOW is good. The veggies often come from a local farm (especially tomatoes), but often not. Simple Kneads, a local bakery, sales bread there. Not such a friendly meat or fruit selection, however. I'll excuse it because it's such a small grocery store! It's a place I really will miss when I leave (especially when complimented by the rest of the stuff at this neighborhood intersection, namely, the Lindley Park Filling Station, Sticks and Stones, and Fishbones, but not Wahoo's.) read more

You can probably tell by all the other reviews that the main attraction here is the massive selection of craft beers they have on hand...it's a small grocery store with all your basic grocery items and a good number of local products from folks like Homeland Creamery, Ward Farms and a few others. Bestway made my uncle very happy this Christmas, and he only vaguely realizes it. My uncle, you see, is from Boston. I currently live in Columbus, OH (but with plans to move to Greensboro in the near future). I saw this uncle in Colorado for the holiday. So where does Bestway figure into this? Well, I ended up being Uncle Dave's Secret Santa at our family gathering, and his gift requests were all beer. Specifically, he had a couple of widely or medium-widely distributed beers on his wish list (I could have copped out and gone with Guinness), but his top request was for the one voted world's best dark ale in 2013 and 2014 by the World Beer Awards. This was a Belgian beer called Malheur 12. After striking out at a few of Columbus's best-stocked beer stores with staff never having heard of it, I checked a few sites online that track beers down to their nearest locations to you. According to these sites, the closest place to me carrying Malheur 12 Dark Ale -- not counting bars and restaurants -- was Bestway, 320 miles away as the crow flies (about 400 miles driving). I called and confirmed that it was in stock. I spoke with two people, one of whom was referred to as "the Beer Guy" and both of whom were incredibly friendly and eager to help. When I made it there a few days later with my Greensboro sweetie (if my sweetie weren't in Greensboro, I probably wouldn't have come all this way for the beer, so she deserves thanks from Uncle Dave too), the Beer Guy remembered me, helped me find this liquidy treasure, and brought some extras out of the back room to fill up a couple of carriers for me. Four days later, I was putting a smile on Uncle Dave's face because he got the beer that he admitted he didn't expect anyone to find. Sweetie and I also picked up a hard cider neither of us had seen before while there. In fact, the cider selection is pretty impressive, and we'll probably work our way through all of it at some point. My four stars for this review are based on the outstanding beer (and cider) selection and the friendliness of the staff, on the one hand, and the significantly less-than-five-star grocery portion of the business, on the other. We needed to pick up some other stuff for a recipe, so we took a spin through the aisles. We weren't TOO surprised not to find the vegan cheese and sour cream we were looking for, but even the produce section looked sad to be there. There, there, little eggplant, it'll all be over soon. If Bestway changed their name from Bestway Grocery to Bestway Beer and a Little Bit of Food, then I would readily promote my rating to a shiny, happy five. read more

The owner is very nice and willing to order you any beer that is not on the self. On Saturdays they do beer tasting, usually 4-5 different ones, in the store and sometimes wine too. I'm a fan of Sottish Ale, and as many Scotch-Irish descendants as there are in North Carolina you would think local breweries or distributors would offer a little more selection. I have found a sampling at City Beverage in Winston-Salem, and when I saw that Bestway had 999 beers, I made the 32 mile round trip drive to check the variety. Well, they do carry a LARGE variety of Beer and Ales. I was really overwhelmed. The downside is, they had only pints of Belhaven Wee Heavy, draught Scottish Ale, and draught Dark Scottish Ale. At just under $5 a pop, not something you want to pick up a sixer of. Anyway, got a pint of each, fought traffic all the way back home, and finally quenched my thirst. Fortunately for me, I have a business appointment in Winston on Monday. City Beverage, here I come... Bestway still deserves the four stars for variety. read more

Bestway absolutely has the best beer selection in town. Their Wall of Beer is a monument to the finest crafted beers from around the world. What I love beyond the incredible beer selection is the number of local items they carry including Homeland Creamery items (best packaged ice cream around) and Goat Lady Dairy cheese. Also love how easy it is to park, run in, gaze at the Wall of Beer, pick up the items I need and check out. A refreshing change from the mega-stores. And I love supporting local owners and products.
