The Clarendon Royal Hotel

To be perfectly honest, I would stay at this hotel again as a matter of convenience more than…read moreanything. The staff was friendly, the room was very tidy & welcoming, and the bar was absolutely enjoyable - fantastic even; however, there are a few things that put me off. 1. There was no telephone to be found in the room, despite there being a directory. As an international traveler with often questionable cell phone service, a phone in the room would have been useful. 2. The shower had no curtain, instead it had more of a half glass door that did not adequately prevent water from going all over the floor. 3. I feel that the hotel could really benefit from a laundry service (self or paid) of some sort. I spoke to the front desk to inquire about such service, and the gentleman told me there were a washer and dryer in my room... after a careful look around I said that there was no washer or dryer to be found. He asked my room number, and upon giving it to him he advised that only suites have a washer and dryer (this would have been helpful to know prior). To be fair, this is disclosed on the website under the 2 bedrooms suite tab... which for our circumstances, I would not have thought to check. 4. Breakfast... I apologize for sounding petty, but this was probably the most irritating aspect of our stay. The first morning we ordered the cured ham, and eggs Florentine.. the server came back a few minutes later to let us know that they were out of ham, and out of spinach, so we would both have to order something else off an already limited menu. The next morning we went down for breakfast and the server (while extremely apologetic) informed us that the chef was very ill and that we would not be able to order off the menu... our breakfast choices were limited to toast, cereal, and fruit. Having worked in the hotel industry in prior years, I was a little perplexed that a back up is not planned for this situation, and why the chef was still in the kitchen if they were so ill. I don't fault the chef at all, as sickness is sometimes unavoidable.. it's the poor planning that I found irritating. To the hotel's credit where it is due, they did offer to refund the breakfast portion of our bill for that morning, but the amount and when I will receive the credit remains to be seen. To the hotel management and staff - you have a gem of a property here. I first stayed 20 years ago with my family, and as a child remembered it to be a magical place. I know it has changed hands since, but you have such a lovely prospect in your hands. I would not write this hotel off, and hope to give it another chance in the future. Please consider this review simply as honest feedback, and constructive criticism.

Lovely hotel, thankfully they were able to accommodate a large party. The rooms were very clean…read moreand provided the basics needed for an overnight stay. The have free wifi and a super fast connection which there is an extra charge. They have a standard buffet breakfast for £8.99. The breakfast was okay, it's not five star dining but it definitely fills the gap. The staff are just so lovely. They accommodated all of our requests made us feel comfortable whilst traveling with many children. Because it was the new year, we were treated to complimentary bottle of Prosecco and the children got treats and books. April is the manager at this location and she was brilliant. She was very warm and kind. To be honest, she made our stay feel as close to home as it could. I'm very appreciative of April and her staff's hard work! Excellent!

Booked online as this was one of two hotels in town. The hotel was pretty basic but had everything…read moreand all the essentials needed for our stay. Located next to High Street we were able to walk to all the restaurants, bars and pubs. Which is always a plus!!! When booking online there are options to add a breakfast but I choose not to. We did try the breakfast twice during our stay and it was ok. There were the traditional British breakfast choices. Bacon, Sausage, Eggs, baked Beans, toast, mushrooms and tomato (which I'm a huge fan of). There was also yogurt, cereal and fruit which was a good addition. From all the breakfast choices, unlimited juices (orange, cranberry, grapefruit and apple) I was most excited about the automatic self serve coffee maker! This coffee maker was impressive and made espressos, americanos, cappuccinos, white coffees and lattes in one touch! This American definitely was not searching around town for a Starbucks because of this machine!

I've found a few little gems when booking hotels for business purposes on late rooms or last minute…read moredot com. This one, now called Hamlets Hotel (& Restaurant) is just that. Rooms are comfortable, as are the beds. If you asked me for any negative feedback ..... the TV is too small ...... nice flatscreen but very small ..... 19" at best! Food I've sampled from the bar menu is plentiful and tasty (top chips). The cooked breakfast is good too, cooked to order. Staff are always friendly, welcoming and helpful.... especially the barman. The bar is very comfortable, a plethora of comfy chairs and sofas to choose from. I haven't eaten in the restaurant yet in the evenings .... the menu does look good though, and is reasonably priced. Every visit down here in Kent results in me booking this particular hotel .... definitely worth the ££££

The good: Picturesque old building, big rooms, good shower water pressure, nice bar/restaurant,…read morefood was good: the Thai Green Curry was delicious and the full English breakfast was good. The bad: No WiFi in our room (we were at the end of a corridor), however step out into the corridor and it was fine, and it's strong in public areas. 5Mb down, 1Mb up. Caulking in the tub/shower going pink. The ugly: Toilet did not flush. Told reception about the toilet and got a "oh thanks for letting us know", but it did not get fixed. While sitting by reception (so I could use WiFi) I heard other guests checking out and complaining about their plumbing too - one shower would not get hot and one was either freezing cold or scalding hot. In summary: A nice old place but with some deferred maintenance. Better for tourists than hardened business travelers.
