    H3. Happy Family

We came here at few weeks ago to order takeout to support the business because my girlfriend read that they had some run in some some teens the night prior. They were pretty busy that night we stopped in. My girlfriend had the happy family and I had the house pan fried noodles. Going to be completely honest. It was mid. Same sauce used for both dishes. I always tend to lean towards anything house special because its going to be the restaurants take on their style. I will say there were more veggies than noodles for my dish. The restaurant itself is very seems spacious and I did see an older gentleman chowing down on multiple plates while we were waiting on our food. Too me, for someone who grew up in the bay area and Chinese restaurants are a dime a dozen, this was very basic. I will say they do have a decent size menu, so you have options.

Red pieces or scraps not ribs

I just ordered from GrubHub. I got the beef lo mein and the ribs. The ribs are little tiny, scrap pieces of meat that are no flavor to them. They're not ribs. Their pieces and they were dry and flavorless. The lo mein was a little pieces of lo mein and a little bit of meat thrown in it! The lo mein was chopped up in about 2 inch pieces! And it was flavorless. I've heard they were good, but I would never recommend it.

Ok, well new to Rio Rancho, I'm trying out all the nearby Chinese restaurants. The second I tried was Best Lee's. I had the pepper steak lunch special which was good considering the very affordable price of $7.65. The food was hot and tasty, the vegetables were still crispy, but the beef was a little bit chewy. It didn't bother me too much, I just think that the meat wasn't velveted. The hot and sour soup broth was good but would have been better if it had mushrooms, black fungus, and more tofu. It is hard to find a decent spring roll anywhere these days, so I can't expect theirs to be any better than the rest. It seems like some critical reviews expect Best Lee's to be perfect but they need to consider that the excellent lunch prices don't break the bank. I will be back for lunch but think that a chicken or pork dish would be more tender. What really disappoints me is that corporate franchises like KFC, Church's, Subway, and Mc Donald's, etc. have raised their prices through the roof even though the quality of their food and their customer service have gone downhill. This has made it hard to return to any of them. Best Lee's may not be the best but they are good, have my respect, will recommend, and I will definitely come back. We need more, not less, honest, reasonably priced, and locally owned restaurants like this.

    Orange chicken and lo mein.

The food was promised in 8 to 10 minutes and was ready easily in that time. I ordered Crab Rangoon, a favorite of my wife, and pork fried noodles. The Crab Rangoon is some of the best in Albuquerque. I could actually taste the crab. Most I've had here just taste of cream cheese, so whatever they do at YNH, they should continue! The pork fried noodles, on the other hand, were nothing special. The dish tasted of Chinese Five Spice which includes clove and is not a favorite flavor for me. My wife didn't mind so much, so this is certainly a personal issue. Add a star if you are ok with the seasoning. We will certainly be back for the Rangoon and to try other menu options.

The owner is a very nice lady who seems very friendly personable with her customers. As customers walked in she remembered their food preferences , other customers here also seemed like regulars and were suggesting things on the menu. The owner was patient, friendly and stood there the whole time helping me choose and navigate the menu since it was my first time here. That by itself is worth an extra Star . I orders the combination plate and she allowed me to make some substitutions. I got general Taos chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and low mein with vegetables. There was also a soup that came for free I think it's egg drop soup with some crunchies. The general tsoas chicken had a good flavor, I asked them to make everything spicy and it had a nice kick. It was really crunchy which I like but I can see alot of people thinking that it has too much batter and not enough meat. Also pretty much everything was pretty greasy when I don't mind but it's not the usual Americanized Chinese food people from other big cities outside of Albuquerque are probably used to: The low mein with vegetables was probably my favorite part. I added spicy to it too and it was great. I can see why people keep coming here; it's a mom pop business where a real traditional Chinese owner takes your order and cooks for you and the food feels authentic. There's not many options in town for Chineese food that are decent and not chains. I would come back for the low mein and support the nice lady who owns this place.

In any event I intermittent fast and I hadn't eaten so we stopped here on the way back. It's not the most promising looking place on the outside, it's fairly generic, not to mention the generic name. But inside it's cute and clean. The menu is a a good size with lots of options. I ordered the chicken satay and the papaya salad. I can't remember what my wife had but it was good. The satay was nice and not covered in gooey marinade. It was delicate and delicious. The papaya salad was huge and I ended up having it for multiple meals. I ordered medium which turned out to be pretty fiery but delicious. While I've found plenty of good Vietnamese I haven't liked too many of the Thai places here. This is an exception. And now I see that they have a second branch on Nob Hill which is near my house which is great.

I ordered the Orange Chicken, which in other restaurants is a dish of battered, deep fried chicken nuggets tossed in a thick gloppy sauce flavored with orange zest to give the chicken that special citrus tang. However, the Riding Star's version of Orange Chicken is a small mound of batter fried chicken pieces with a thin sauce served on the side which tastes more like maple pancake syrup than oranges. The flavorless bland beige rice that accompanies the entree added nothing to the overall dish. Even the egg rolls had no flavor and tasted like they were taken out of the freezer and flash fried. But as bad as the food was, I must say that the service was EXCELLENT. I was immediately greeted and seated the moment I walked in. The older woman working the front dining room was very hospitable and was taking the time to patiently explain the menu to various guests. And the young man and woman who served me were very attentive and courteous. So at the end of the day, I'll give the Rising Star three stars for its most valuable resource - the staff!
