We were referred by a friend and have since discovered that other friendsalso love this gem of a learning center. We started with this tutoring company when my son was a Junior in High School. We wanted him to work on self-management and on specific writing and math skills. He was getting a little lazy and scattered. Most importantly, we wanted our son to set some goals for himself and work toward those goals. The support that he received from Next Steps was just what he needed. The staff are highly qualified and really gave our son what he needed, from so many disciplines. Week by week we benefitted from teachers who specialize in math/science, writing, executive functioning, college/career planning and selection, and college essay writing. The pre-college planning for SAT and college essay writing took a lot of time but it was a tremendous growth experience. My son became a student who persisted in finding resources to complete what was necessary at school managed his own assignments and work. His self reliance skills really improved, and his motivation and pride in his work grew. Now that my son is recently graduated from high school and will be entering the college of his choice, I look back and know for a fact that the expert, personalized, focused help that he received from Next Steps Tutoring played a significant role in his success. As he enters college I know that he has tools to manage himself and his learning. In the near future my son will have some pre-college tutoring / success planning from his teachers at Next Steps Tutoring, just to strategize and prepare for his first year at college. I know that these teachers are available by phone or Skype in the future for him. It is so wonderful from a parent's perspective to see the growth of a young person. As they progressed through the levels, my daughters would sometimes "hit a wall", but were able to persist and meet the challenges because they enjoy abacus and love Yuka-sensei. Since they started learning abacus, my daughters' school performance has improved in math and other subjects as well. It is remarkable that abacus improves concentration and increases imagination. I strongly advise parents to think twice before sending their children to this school. Our…read moreexperience has been filled with severe safety oversights, poor academic planning, and a complete lack of teacher accountability. Severe Safety Concerns: The school utilizes its own forest area, but supervision is shockingly poor. My child was lost in it multiple times. In one incredibly negligent incident, a teacher completely walked away from the group without even realizing my child was left behind. Substandard & Unlicensed Staff: We found out that multiple teachers on staff do not even hold proper teaching licenses. The English instruction is highly unprofessional; the teacher struggles with basic verb tenses and passes these grammatical errors and incorrect English habits onto the students. Disorganized Curriculum: The academic planning is entirely backward. The principal pushed the curriculum into multiplication before the students had even mastered basic subtraction. Because of this structural failure, my children were left severely behind in math when they finally transferred to a different school. Lack of Care & Blame Culture: The staff consistently shifts blame onto the children instead of taking responsibility. When the kids complained about being freezing cold outside, teachers dismissed them and blamed them for "not wearing enough layers." In art class, teachers stand by while students' clothes are ruined with paint, later claiming it is the child's fault for not wearing a poncho. I have had to throw away numerous pieces of ruined clothing.

Our son was at IFS for 3 years. A few key takeaway from our experience (and why we will enroll our…read moredaughter in the next couple years when she is ready: 1. Mandarin immersion school I think of it as going to school, but you go the extra bonus of Mandarin language (with all benefit that come with growing up as bilingual child). One can argue their preference of home based daycare, regular daycare, or school. I personally prefer school (compared to daycare) to have less students turnover, more organized activity (no one come at 9.30, 10am, and 10.30 - which break the focus of the activity), and better curriculum. 2. Reggio Emilia/Project based learning I prefer not to focus too much on academic for kids under 5. There will be time for that later on. I believe that should not be the focus for 3 years old child. Project based learning allow children to play while learn. 3. Outdoor space They do not stay at "sterile" room. The school intentionally allow students to explore and play with nature. Our son (5 years old in non Mandarin speaking household) received a lot of praise from native speaker during our trip to Taiwan that he spoke fluent Mandarin. During our time here, we enjoyed all of his teachers. We are aware of some turnover impacting some other students, but at the end of the day, some of them are out of school's control. We definitely sad that we have to leave IFS family as our son was accepted at Jing Mei. Otherwise, IFS is a strong candidate for our son's continued education.

We had our kids at Evergreen for four years. Most of the teachers were top notch, the curriculum…read morewas great, and the campus was very open and almost like a little college. We made a lot of great parent friendships as well. Ms. Judith, Kathleen, and Debra in PS, PK, and 1st grade were absolutely awesome and did an amazing job with our boys. The school also has great financial resources with very generous families supporting continued investment in the physical plant and new programs. One thing we wished were different might have been the level of competition between the kids to be first or best at everything and the impact that started to have on our oldest (who was beginning to only want to pursue things where he could be #1). I don't think the school encourages that (on the contrary, I think they encourage all the kids to always try) but it could be the natural dynamic of any school that only has gifted children. Some of our friends' kids also encountered challenges around bullying; it wasn't rampant though and could have been the reality of how kids interact at that age. On a related note, our biggest advice is to be aware of the sibling admissions policy. Our youngest was admitted to and attended Evergreen PS or PK and was doing great according to all the teacher evaluations. However, after two tests, his top IQ score was in the 90th percentile and as such was short of the 95th percentile cutoff. We were then told he could not continue to Kindergarten (even though the PK teacher strongly recommended he advance to Kindergarten). It made for a really stressful and emotional year for us and while we respect the School's right to set these kinds of policies, it seemed at odds with the values of community, inclusion, and social and emotional intelligence -- especially since the testing data was very inconsistent and in the gray area.
