The before and after essays were night and day in difference. There is no denying that they were a monumental help. Then, when I thought she was now doing great in school, I got a bombshell report at the teacher-parent conference where I was told she wasn't turning in most of her Math homework or classwork. So I had Sylvan switch tracks for her to study Math for the second half of the year, after the writing segment was wrapped up. Today, she is about a year ahead of her grade in Math and is looking to take the test to skip 6th grade Math as a result. And while all of that is wonderful news, the most important result is that she is more motivated about her studies, more confident in her abilities, and actually ENJOYS learning with her tutors. She has enjoyed going since day 1, and I truly believe their strongest asset is that they have made learning fun for those kids so that it is less of a struggle and more of a challenge to conquer. A top notch director and a very talented crew who clearly care about the success of those kids-- I couldn't recommend them more.

The proof is in their success-my kids scored in the high 80 and 90 percentiles on their ISEEs, were accepted to their private schools of choice, and earned 5s on AP Physics and Calculus exams. My son is a senior, and with Lisa's guidance, achieved a 1530 on the SAT, missing only one math question-no superscore, just one test. Thus far, he has not been turned down by any of the top-tier engineering programs to which he has applied. My younger child is now working diligently with Lisa to maximize his SAT scores as he prepares for college applications in the fall. What makes this all the more impressive is the fact that both my children have dyslexia and dysgraphia-school has not come easy for them. Whether working directly with Lisa or one of her expert team members, you can expect compassion, professionalism, flexibility, and a commitment to meet your child at his or level, emotionally and academically. Lisa and her team are exacting and demanding, but with an understanding that kids' anxiety levels and workloads fluctuate through the school year and need to be taken into consideration and adapted to. Working with Lisa, I felt supported as a parent, and more importantly, I knew that while my children were working hard, they too felt supported. My kids have tried preparing for standardized tests using workbooks and online/in-person group classes, but both report the one-on-one experience they have had with Lisa and her team to be the game-changer. Not only are Lisa and her team effective, they are kind! I have enjoyed all my interactions with them, and the kids do not balk when it is time to get down to work. They also feel motivated to get their work done between sessions, so they are prepared for their next meeting-with no helicoptering from me. This is how test prep should be.

She was underprepared and we only had a few months to get ready. Lisa met with my daughter 10 times over a few months and dramatically improved her scores and confidence. She did this with incredible kindness and empathy for the stress of the process my daughter was going through. I would highly recommend Lisa to any parent whose child is preparing for the SSAT (or SAT for that matter).

This is our family's third attempt at a tutoring for our now second grader, after failed attempts…read moreat Kumon and abacus classes. I figured I'd give it one more shot now that we recently moved from Bellevue to the Plateau/Highlands area. I purchased a bargain voucher for six sessions for one subject, admittedly not expecting much. (hint: their name ends with "on") Originally learned about this BIC location during kids' swimming class when I saw a pair of third graders doing their BIC tutoring homework in the bleachers. When I ran into a former neighbor of mine on our second week, I knew I might be onto something. The Issaquah location is open three times a week (Tue, Thur, Sun) and is managed by Mr Victor Ho. Victor also started a new Wednesday sessions at the EX3 Teen & Rec Center on the Samm. Plateau. BIC "Enrichment Courses" are divided into English and Math subject. Each session is 75 minutes long for one subject. Victor Students seems to be grouped by age/grade You have several students under the supervision of an adult teacher, and the students are expected to work on their own, "study hall" style, until they are stuck or otherwise have a question. Private tutoring this is not. Most of the hard work is at home, where the parents have to establish ad maintain a daily study routine for each kid. I've also noticed lot of anxious parents prepping their 6-8 year olds for the Cogat and achievement exams (I'm no sure if the latter is ITBS or Stanford10). Basically it's whatever BSD, ISD and LWSD are dishing out. I have no opinion on this particular offering, other than that it's popular and probably worth checking out if that's your focus. Ultimately, what sets the Issaquah operation apart is the dedication and accessibility of the branch manager, who has been receptive to and patient with my many questions and concerns about our kids progress (or sometimes, the lack thereof). Victor has been willing to tweak things so we can emphasize topics where there are gaps in understanding or merely insufficient mastery. Vic is also eager to hear about any errors / typos in the problem sets, as well as of any subpar tutoring sessions. As you'd expect, the tutoring competition is stiff on the Eastside but they seem to be thriving. Don't let their unassuming exterior and frankly, dingy interior fool you -- what they save on rent / furniture, they pass on the savings to you! (Seriously, BIC rates are lower than our previous tutoring programs.) This is a system that appears to be working for our children.

The…read morefirst thing that stood out to me about Stuart was how he took the time to understand me personally, recognize my motivations for applying to business school, and identify how business school could help me achieve my professional aspirations. Although I did not fully understand the significance of it then, I now realize that this extra effort to familiarize himself with my story made all the difference in helping me craft essays that showcased the best of me. I applied to six highly competitive schools and was admitted to five of them. Without Stuart's help, I do not believe I would have had so many great options to choose from. My GMAT score was competitive, but below average for a top-25 school, which I am happy to report I will be attending next year (Georgetown McDonough). Stuart was always quick to respond, considerate of my time, and always offered the option of a phone call to further explain where and why particular edits would enhance my essays. Furthermore, when I needed help prepping for my first interview, Stuart provided me with a long list of questions, which we practiced answering on a mock interview phone call. Finally, Stuart was a great resource when I was making my decision of which school to attend (was debating between Georgetown McDonough and U of Washington Foster). I was referred to Stuart by a close friend of mine and I will be sure to pass the favor along by referring Stuart to my next friend who is interested in applying to b-school. The MBA application process can be rigorous and daunting, and I truly believe that Stuart/ Simply Brilliant gives candidates a leg up on the competition and a better opportunity to attend the school of their choice.
