We love Berties Creative Creamery and the people who work there are lovely. The icecream is fabulous and the ambience is very happy. We only have one complaint, and that's that the choc dipped cones that they sell - and which, for us, are the biggest drawcards to this shop - seem to almost never be available. We've been told they mostly have them on the weekend as they don't sell during the week - but this seems inevitable, given that they never seem to provide them during the week, and even on weekends we've visited the store and found them unavailable on occasion. We've taken to calling ahead of time to see if they're available, and during the week they almost never are. As a result, we buy our icecream elsewhere and are going to Berties less and less.
If you don't like choc dipped cones, this is definitely the place for you, as the icecream is top notch. But if a choc dipped cone is a must, you'll need to go elsewhere.
We do wish Berties well, tho, as they are a very welcome addition to Islington in Westwood. Just wish they could nail the regularity of those chocolate cones....
ETA So after waiting all week and being told the choc dipped cones were only available on the weekend, we went into Berties about an hour after they opened on Sunday - cones all gone. Very disappointed. I called and was told they'd make me some specifically and I could pick them up on Tuesday, but that will mean taking in my own, stale cone if I want a choc dipped cone.
I also wanted to add - the icecream from Berties is VERY soft. We had thought it might be a little firmer when the weather cooled and it wasn't so warm in the store, but no such luck. A lot of ice creameries keep their ice cream not *too* hard to save the wrists of those scooping it out for customers, but this is softer than that. We bring our ice creams home and put them in the freezer for 2 hours to get them firm before we eat them. Otherwise, you more or less have to sit in the shop to eat your cone; they're too soft to make it home in the car, even if you live in the immediate area, as we do.
Actually, after writing this and thinking about it, this is a ridiculous way of trying to get an ice cream cone. They've just lost us as customers. Great ice cream - and it will still be perfect for a lot of people, I'm sure. Just not us. Dropped from 3 to 2 stars. But that's because of our specific experience; if you like cups or plain cones, and your ice cream very soft, you'll love Berties. read more
