SERVICE - located in greenpoint about 10 minutes walk from the subway station - spacious yet small interior with seating for small or larger groups - no reservation required - coffee set up in one corner adds an element of cultural decor - server was quick to take our order yet took a while to bring us the check after we finished eating - food served relatively quickly - ambiance good for a semi casual meal MENU - Ethiopian mains and brunch specials - all vegan/vegetarian - average price FOOD - vegetable combo (9/10): I got the combo that lets you choose five dishes and is served with injera. I chose the misir wor (red lentils), shiro (ground chickpeas), gomen (collard greens), tofu tibs, and cabbage carrot dish. The mixture was a good blend of heartier lentils with fresher greens. Each dish had a unique flavor even though they use similar spices. My favorites were the shiro and the tofu tibs. The gomen felt undercooked and could have used more flavor. I was excited to try this place despite the trek but was sadly disappointed. Definitely not as good as my go-to Ethiopian spots (like Abyssinia), or even as the mediocre spots in midtown (like Queen of Sheba and Meskerem). Everything tasted a little drier than usual. Also it's vegan so you won't get your usual meat options. The wine was also disappointing though to be fair I didn't expect too much. Finally, reservations are a pain to make - no one answers the phone or responds to emails and you can't make them online. Fortunately it turns out you don't need one (the place was empty when we arrived for a 12:30pm lunch on a summer Friday). Sadly won't be returning. read more

Very delish! It's so great that everything offered here is Vegan! Because of the vegan concept, of course it'll be different than the typical Ethiopian meat dishes, but it's still quite flavorful. The co-owner, Bersi, took our order and cooked everything in the kitchen when we visited her restaurant. She was very kind and hospitable. She also talked to us and gave background on her restaurant. Ethiopian cuisine is one of my favorite cuisines but the challenge is in that there aren't too many options to chose from in and around the NYC area. For LIC residents though, Bersi is a no-brainer. A quick 10 mins subway ride gets you to this amazing place which has enough tables to seat about 50 people at any given point. Service is excellent, noise levels on the lower end, and a very clean setup is how I'd describe their setup. We ordered their Ethiopian Spice Tea ($4) which was flavorful, and got the Bersi Combo ($60) which was a perfect portion to share for four adults. Timatim Fitfit which was included in our combo is something I'd highly recommend if you want to order appetizers and if you enjoy tangy/sour taste! We ordered Kategna ($6) which had a decent spice kick, and was pretty good. Service was quick and our delicious food was on our table within 10 minutes of ordering. Highly recommend this place if you have appreciation for good flavors, excellent food, and good service. Will definitely visit again! read more

It's been a while since I have had Ethiopian food and couldn't wait to try this spot. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked into a very cute restaurant. We were greeted and served by Analise and she was very nice! We started with appetizers of the Sambusa and the Avacado! Both were very good, and the dip had the right amount of spice. For our meal, we had the Weye, which we could choose 7 entrées and that included the Gomen, Atit Kik Alicha, Shimbra Asa, Misir Wot, Tikel Gomen, Engudaye Tibs, and the Specual Shiroye. This was accompanied by the Injera bread. I loved everything except for the Atir Kik Alicha and the Shimbra Asa. I don't want to forget, they had good wine as well! Welcoming Ethiopian restaurant. We dined in sunday afternoon for lunch. We walked in and were seated immediately. We shared a combination platter of seven different items plus salad and injera. The portion size was huge, so we ended up taking half the food to go. Our favorite items were the spiced split pea and the yellow lentils. All the food was hearty and vegan friendly. The kind of food that fills you and leaves you feeling good. The had three beers on draft (Allagash white, fiddlehead ipa, and a lagunitas ipa) and some wine options. Service was polite and helpful. I believe there were two gender neutral restrooms. read more

There is a reason I was the only diner in this restaurant during a lunch rush. Even though the food is good, the service is not. The whole time I felt largely ignored and treated like a second class citizen. I did not feel appreciated, and the whole experience felt thrown together even though the flavors were good and the server was honest with me. There are much better Ethiopian restaurants that treat you well and more amiable to people wanting to try the cuisine. There is a reason I was alone here. read more

Transport to Ethiopia with vegan dining at this newly opened Brooklyn restaurant. The staff is welcoming and kind. I was lucky to dine there on a weekend when they make & serve complimentary traditional Ethiopian coffee. They get the beans directly from Ethiopia. They are then roasted and made into this strong coffee. The menu offers a long list of vegan food options. They even have gluten free injera (spongy bread) served with platters. Just ask! After much debate, I ordered the Gursha platter. This is meant for one but can easily be shared or you may have leftovers. A salad, beets, and mix of lentils are quite filling. They have larger combos good for groups. There is a bar serving alcohol as well. While I didn't have room, I noticed Baklava was the dessert item. Sit back in this intimate setting with traditional decor and music as you enjoy a homemade meal. Try the coffee. They serve it with popcorn & homemade bread. We initially dined in and subsequently have done takeout. The restaurant is somewhat dimly lit with Ethiopian decorations. I have ordered the Kitfo a few times but made the mistake of adding too much of the spice that comes with it and upset my stomach. I enjoyed the injera but my in-laws found it too sour, probably depends on what you're used to. It's a bit pricey. I think it was a nice experience but not a place I'll be revisiting any time soon. read more

Recently opened Ethiopian restaurant specializing in a closed neighborhood Italian restaurant. Still, carbs are still satisfied with teff made injera, used to dip into smorgasbord of curries and stews that are also vegan/vegetarian friendly. Mains could be ordered individually or for the indecisive as combo to share or not. There are some unique dishes like the tropical addis using fruits and the bersi fit fit. Sadly baklava is listed as the only dessert, so wished it was was African donuts also. This local business is such a welcome entrant to the neighborhood. Bersi is AMAZING! Went here on a date night and started the feast with some sambusa apps. We ended up getting the Zenach combo with a side of rice, after meticulously reading the extensive menu. The staff are super friendly and welcoming, and gave us some recommendations. The food is simply amazing, comforting, healthy, and well spiced. The hot peppers that came with the sambusa was the right amount of spicy! We had ALOT of food and left with some banging leftovers. Totally going to bring a crew of friends here to gorge ourselves. I'd imagine if I was a touring band playing a show at St. Vitus, I'd hit this place up...probably after the set since you may go into a food coma before you perform. Highly recommended! read more

Among the many Ethiopian restaurants I've tried, this place was solid/above average! We were a group of 4 so the staff recommended the combo option which was more than enough to share (any of the combination options). All of our favorite was the strong bean/carrot which was very balanced and seasoned. Also had the Ethiopian coffee which was served in a traditional way with incense. The coffee and combo were both super affordable considering the amount provided!! Staff were friendly and good at making recommendations. Definitely recommend this place. read more

Absolutely excellent. There are a few vegan Ethiopian restaurants in the area, I have tried all of them and found them just ok. This place finally delivers! So many different dishes, great service, caring staff. We ordered the Bersi combo and we loved it. Everything was tasty and fresh. Will definitely be back regularly to try the other dishes as their menu is extensive. Very happy they're in the neighborhood! read more

The location is quite unique; settled in a residential neighborhood. Inside you will be treated to amazing delicious food. The service was excellent. Our server was kind, smiling, and excited to share the restaurant's history. Back to the food, if you have had Ethiopian food before then I challenge you to find another one as tasty as this one. This was my first time trying Ethiopian food let alone vegan Ethiopian food and the food and the service was great. I came with a large party of 12 and everything came timely and the waitress was attentive. The food came out hot, all at once and it was sooo much food. Unassuming yet stellar new *vegan and gluten-free* restaurant in Greenpoint serving traditional Ethiopian dishes. Relaxed and unpretentious (not easily done on Manhattan Avenue), and the meal was both beautiful and delicious. You should go there as soon as possible. Delicious! We had the weye combo and chose 7 mains with guidance from the server who was wonderful! We had the kategna as a starter. The meal was more than enough for 2 adults and 2 kids. We all loved everything, but the beets, lentils, salad and string beans were our faves. Will def come back. read more

Went here last night and got the weye combo - my friend and I could not finish it, it was that big! Food was amazing and fresh with generous portions. I'm taking a star off though because a number of the entrees were not available, which was a bit disappointing, especially since it was pretty early for dinner. Also, we ordered the spicy rice but the rice wasn't spicy at all. Will definitely be coming here again though to try the rest of the menu! What a great addition to Greenpoint :) read more

If I were a tourist here, it would be on my list under "things to try." Or at least to try once ! I also had 2 vegetarian dishes - the Shiro Wett and the Messir Wett. The Shiro was made with beans. The Mesir was made with lentils. I've had the Shiro and Mesir Watt many times before - both at Ghenet as well as other Ethiopian restaurants (Awash Ethiopian on the upper west side). I think Ghenet has some of the most flavorful dishes in the city. They don't overdo it - just the right amount of spicy hotness. Overall, my favorite dish from the combination platter was the Shiro Wett. It had a light touch of smokiness that went really well with the beans. Very filling and delicious with the injera. I wish they offered fitfit salad - the menu has Ethiopian tomato salad but there are no photos of it on the online menu. There are photos of some of the other menu items but not all. I think they'd sell more stuff if there were photos since not everyone is familiar with all of the various dishes. Just a thought.

And I saw a sign for happy hour that occurs on some days, we love that! Their menu has some creative cocktails, mocktails, and unusual ingredients. And of course, they have the classic veggie platters that we love to try. We got the plate for 4, picked out items, and got to work. Everything tasted fantastic, truly. We had fresh injera, and it was easy to make out what each item was. The menu advertised the beets as also having potatoes, which we immediately realized were missing -- turns out the menu needs to be updated haha, they aren't supposed to be included anymore. All this to say, we had a great time there. And there's only one thing I could add that's different here compared to other Ethiopian restaurants: the portions are definitely smaller. If I had a plate like this anywhere else, I would've been overstuffed. I wasn't still hungry though, I was satisfied. Respectfully, he blamed his colleague for ringing it up wrong and offered to give me cash from the tip jar as compensation. I declined, but it left me wondering--are drink prices supposed to be fixed, or do they fluctuate depending on the bartender? And more importantly, does the price somehow depend on how intoxicated they think the customers are!

The edges were super crispy like a chip, and the masala potato pilling was delicious If I could do it all over again, I'd only eat here and not eat ahead of time, since this was enough food to fill a party of two (maybe add in a samosa or two). If you go on the vegan shop up website (https://veganshopup.wordpress.com/) there is always a list of vendors! Pine box rock shop is a little small and it gets very crowded. They also card you as it is a bar, fyi- so probably not kid-friendly! Some vendors take credit card but some are cash only, so make sure you have CASH! I definitely recommend this for vegans and those interested in the vegan lifestyle to explore yummy vegan food and merchandise, and to support local vendors/ small businesses.
