Very delish! It's so great that everything offered here is Vegan! Because of the vegan concept, of course it'll be different than the typical Ethiopian meat dishes, but it's still quite flavorful. The co-owner, Bersi, took our order and cooked everything in the kitchen when we visited her restaurant. She was very kind and hospitable. She also talked to us and gave background on her restaurant. I recommend you read the About section of Bersi' restaurant website to get more context on why vegan and the start of Bersi and her husband's business.

Excellent food and even better service. Such a friendly atmosphere from the staff. I enjoyed my meal and this was my first time trying Ethiopian food.

Bersi Combo ($60)

Ethiopian cuisine is one of my favorite cuisines but the challenge is in that there aren't too many options to chose from in and around the NYC area. For LIC residents though, Bersi is a no-brainer. A quick 10 mins subway ride gets you to this amazing place which has enough tables to seat about 50 people at any given point. Service is excellent, noise levels on the lower end, and a very clean setup is how I'd describe their setup. We ordered their Ethiopian Spice Tea ($4) which was flavorful, and got the Bersi Combo ($60) which was a perfect portion to share for four adults. Timatim Fitfit which was included in our combo is something I'd highly recommend if you want to order appetizers and if you enjoy tangy/sour taste! We ordered Kategna ($6) which had a decent spice kick, and was pretty good. Service was quick and our delicious food was on our table within 10 minutes of ordering. Highly recommend this place if you have appreciation for good flavors, excellent food, and good service. Will definitely visit again!

Big portions, big flavors, big appetites - in general big fan of this new kid on the block

It's been a while since I have had Ethiopian food and couldn't wait to try this spot. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked into a very cute restaurant. We were greeted and served by Analise and she was very nice! We started with appetizers of the Sambusa and the Avacado! Both were very good, and the dip had the right amount of spice. For our meal, we had the Weye, which we could choose 7 entrées and that included the Gomen, Atit Kik Alicha, Shimbra Asa, Misir Wot, Tikel Gomen, Engudaye Tibs, and the Specual Shiroye. This was accompanied by the Injera bread. I loved everything except for the Atir Kik Alicha and the Shimbra Asa. I don't want to forget, they had good wine as well! We had a good experience!

Weye

Food great; portions big; stomach satisfied. Recommend the dirkosh/avocado (kinda like an elevated, healthier guacs and chip) and weye. The injera is nice and fluffy, and their mains have fantastic flavor. Highly recommend this place.

We really enjoyed the Thiebou Jen, while the fish had some bones they were manageable and the flavors were on point. The dish does come with a pepper on the side, but beware she is a heavy hitter and not for the faint of heart. So happy we had the plantains as well, they were a perfect compliment to this main dish. Cocktail was the Last Last, a delightful take on the Last Word and extra points here for the creativity of the name. Had some of the Fataya empanadas as well, next time I want to try the Spicy Potato Nems and a lamb dish.

The reviews looked great and I've never had Senegalese food before so was very excited to try. The restaurant was pretty quiet when we arrived. It was one of those open air restaurants where the exterior walls/windows fully opened to let in fresh air. it was nice to feel like we were dining outside and enjoying the fresh air, but still being seated indoors. The menu looked good and had a bit of everything for everyone. We got the fried calamari and the Thiebou Jen, (which was stewed red snapper & vegetables over jollof rice, and listed as the National plate of Senegal). The red snapper was good, but the portion felt very small given the price. Even the calamari portion felt small given what we paid. The jollof rice was well seasoned as it soaked up all the braised broth and seasoning. There was a spicy sauce that we weren't too privy to and accidentally stirred it in, but it was still tolerable. We ordered beignets for dessert and they were pillowy and soft. The only reason why I gave it 3 stars is because we felt the service was lacking. It felt like we were constantly ignored. When we tried to look around and get the waiter's attention to order or to ask for something, they looked like they were just scrolling on their phones by the bar / kitchen area rather than being attentive. Or when we'd try to get their attention after they tended to the table next to us, they just continued walking past and didn't even acknowledge us or come back shortly to check in. Even getting the check to pay took almost 15 minutes.

I always get a combination dinner. This time I tried the Siga Wett beef stew with Ethiopian spices - very delicious! Spicy but not too spicy. Ethiopian food can be addictive, years ago I was definitely into eating a lot of Ethiopian. New York City has some great Ethiopian. If I were a tourist here, it would be on my list under "things to try." Or at least to try once ! I also had 2 vegetarian dishes - the Shiro Wett and the Messir Wett. The Shiro was made with beans. The Mesir was made with lentils. I've had the Shiro and Mesir Watt many times before - both at Ghenet as well as other Ethiopian restaurants (Awash Ethiopian on the upper west side). I think Ghenet has some of the most flavorful dishes in the city. They don't overdo it - just the right amount of spicy hotness. Overall, my favorite dish from the combination platter was the Shiro Wett. It had a light touch of smokiness that went really well with the beans. Very filling and delicious with the injera. I wish they offered fitfit salad - the menu has Ethiopian tomato salad but there are no photos of it on the online menu. There are photos of some of the other menu items but not all. I think they'd sell more stuff if there were photos since not everyone is familiar with all of the various dishes. Just a thought.

We noticed their rating and it gave us a bit of pause, but we ultimately decided to give it a shot out of curiosity. We got there right before they were supposed to open, and we saw a staff member inside setting up around the restaurant and behind the bar. About 5 minutes after the hour, they opened the door (just a tad late), and we were their first guests. We were greeted and told we could sit wherever we wanted. There were a bunch of cats up as decor, for Halloween decor I imagine. I observed some really nice frames hanging up and a lovely mantle arrangement. And I saw a sign for happy hour that occurs on some days, we love that! Their menu has some creative cocktails, mocktails, and unusual ingredients. And of course, they have the classic veggie platters that we love to try. We got the plate for 4, picked out items, and got to work. Everything tasted fantastic, truly. We had fresh injera, and it was easy to make out what each item was. The menu advertised the beets as also having potatoes, which we immediately realized were missing -- turns out the menu needs to be updated haha, they aren't supposed to be included anymore. All this to say, we had a great time there. And there's only one thing I could add that's different here compared to other Ethiopian restaurants: the portions are definitely smaller. If I had a plate like this anywhere else, I would've been overstuffed. I wasn't still hungry though, I was satisfied. But if you have a lot of room in your stomach usually, the smaller portions may disappoint. But as for me, I'd totally return.

Definitely toned down to suit a wide audience. The special tibs was a little on the dry side, could have used more sauce, but it was also light and not greasy. The chicken dish was also lightly seasoned. Each entry was generously divided and tasty. The entree arrived wrapped in a large portion of spongy fresh injera bread. We happened to be in this part of Brooklyn for the concert in a small park by my son's band, and…read morehappened to notice that there was a Senegalese restaurant nearby. Since we've never had Senegalese food, the decision to go there was no brainer. The interior of the restaurant looked like an art gallery, with paintings, carvings, handicrafts and photos from Western Africa. An old man (the owner?) received us. He recommended several vegetarian options for me, but I already had my heart set on the Okra stew. He then asked if I wanted Okra Tofu? I asked him if people in Senegal consumed Tofu? He said no, but customers had requested it, so they put it on the menu. (Who comes to a Senegalese restaurant and asks for Tofu?) I told him to not give me anything outside an authentic Senegalese diet. A few minutes later he came out of the kitchen to tell me that there was not enough okra stew left to form a main dish, but he'd offer whatever was there as a free side dish for me. So I went with his suggestion of Mafe Legumes (vegetables stewed in peanut butter sauce), while husband asked for the Senegalese national dish of Tiebou Jeun (baked fish). For the accompanying starch, I chose Funio, the Western African staple grain (again introduced by this wise old man). We also ordered Nem Legumes - vegetable spring rolls (I'd call them samosas :-)). Husband asked for a ginger drink. The ginger drink tasted like pure ginger juice (sweetened a bit of course) - it would certainly cleanse one's palate and warm one's stomach. The Nem Legumes were nice, but the winner was the stewed tomato dipping sauce that came with them. Our main dishes were served on large dinner plates. The portions were so substantial that I ended up packing half of my stew home, after stuffing myself unusually full already. There were chunks of yam, carrots and cabbage on my plate, flavored in a creamy and well-seasoned peanut butter sauce. But the winner was still the Okra stew - spicy, tangy, tasty. I also stole some Joloff rice off my husband's plate. It was another surprisingly delicious treat! His fish looked like a portion of a big carp, with quite a bit of bones to pick out (we don't mind fish bones, having been well trained in certain Asian cuisines :-)) Our bill, presented by a young waitress, came in a little basked covered by the broad hem of an African lady in a beautiful dress. The old man passed out table and said "oh yes she collects for us." For a meal of one appetizer, two mains, and a drink, the price was super reasonable!
