We thoroughly enjoyed this quaint Gastropub on an unassuming corner of Duckworth street. We happened to arrive right when they opened at 11am, and we were able to select from their brunch or lunch menu. Hubby and I both ordered from their lunch menu. I had my eye on the PB&J burger that I had seen on Yelp, as peanut butter is my favorite thing ever! This burger did not disappoint. While the combo sounds strange, the flavors were well-balanced with the brie cheese, caramelized onions and bacon. The meat was cooked to a perfect medium and the hamburger bun was soft. I chose the kettle chips for my side, and they tasted house made. Very delicious! The only thing I didn't like about this burger was the price tag = $22. Hubby had the seafood chowder for $17 and it was enough for a full meal. He said the chowder was very flavorful and full of seafood. He was in heaven! We both ordered a Quidi Vidi 1892 amber ale on draft. They only had 7 beers on tap and I wished that they had a medium or dark beer, but this area doesn't seem to be big on that. They do have Guinness in a can, if that's your thing. Service was friendly and the food came out relatively fast. The booths were comfy and the pub reminded me of a cozy neighborhood bar. This was a great fun stop. We were cruising on Oceania Vista and put in the port here. Quick yelp check helped us fine this special place. After a week of ship food this was perfect. Stopped in here twice. The fish and chips I got the first time were awesome. Maybe the best ive ever had. The fish was fresh and light. I don't recommend adding the extra fish unless yourre really hungry. I ended up leaving some which I felt sad about. The service was great both times. The cocktail I had was nothing great but it was a pleasant brunch drink. I had the spicy chicken the second visit and was kind of underwhelming. Friendly service and very good food for the price. We had cod tongues, maple bourbon ribs, the cod burger, and seafood chowder. The ribs came with some delicious sides that were equally as good as the ribs - which were tender and not too sweet. The cod burger was very good - crispy but not dry. Fries were great, too. The seafood chowder had a nice variety of seafood in it, and was very tasty, without being too salty as chowders often are. Our only criticism was the decor inside was a bit tired. You knew you were getting a good meal even though it was a wait We are very disappointed that we haven't been getting a good meal and service not so good. Let me start by saying, if this was review was solely based on service, it would easily be a 5-stars. Our server was wonderful, food came quickly, and definitely felt that renown Newfoundland hospitality. But, the food... First, if you can't eat pork, there's a very limited number of things on the menu that are accessible. Even the burgers were made with a beef-pork mix. Secondly, the food we did order, it was, alright. It certainly did the job on a rainy St. John's night, but it was nothing to write home about -- just not particularly flavourful. The member of our party who had the burger found it just... fine. For a gastropub, it seems that this would be one of the important things to get right, but it just wasn't there. I would give this pub a solid 7/10 rating. The service is good, the atmosphere is great - you really feel like you're in a dark Irish pub, the seating is comfortable and it gets pretty lively. It's not a 10/10 because the nachos, while good, we're lacking significant toppings (peppers, different onions/ olives etc) and the pico de Gallo has no flavour. If I want to melt cheese on some chips and call it a day I can do that at home - for a restaurant I expect better. Also I thought the choice to serve my lime Margarita in a martini glass an odd choice. Nevertheless I would go back and try one of their burgers. They looked massive and they have some interesting combinations. I also really liked the bread pudding which was more of a warm banana cake then a pudding but delicious none the less. read more

I have been a regular patron for a year. The burgers are top notch. The service and atmosphere are what you would hope for. It can get crowded at peak hours, so judge yourself accordingly. As well, it is a great spot for brunch on the weekends. Try this joint once and you will be back again and again. read more

I wanted to like this so much more! We saved this place for last on our holiday because it seemed a bit nicer than most of our fairly frugal stops. Kind of bummed to end an otherwise incredible St John's experience on a down note. We came in at the same time as 2 other couples at different tables and AFTER ordering, everyone ended up waiting for well over an hour for food. It didn't look to be understaffed but it felt unorganized and that the staff were frazzled. When another table complained near us about the wait time, the waitress grudgingly gave a discount...but not to us others who were also in earshot. As a former waitress it is common practice to comp SOMETHING (a drink, an appetizer, a discount, free desert, etc) if someone is waiting for over 45 minutes. It should be offered and not have to be asked for. Food was hit and miss. The cod burger would have been fantastic (the flavor was great) if it hadn't been the spine of the fish. I tried biting into it, gave in and tried using a serrated steak knife to eat it, and finally gave up. Literally couldn't cut through the piece of fish. The frites were nicely cooked and the ketchup/cocktail sauce was really nice. Because I believe there is always something good: the soups were spot on. Absolutely fantastic flavor and not to be missed. Overall, I think perhaps we just came at a bad time; if I was local I'd give this place another shot. read more

It is a pub, a pub, a pub. I am reminding you to set your expectation right, should you plan to patronize. As pub food goes, the Jack and Coke BBQ chicken wings we had were totally wicked, the Chipotle and Lime mussels divine, and spicy ribs bold flavoured (unfortunately not spicy). The "small plates" were big enough for sharing. On the flip side, the scallops were not fresh enough for searing, and the Creamy Dill and Pepper wings were just dill cream, minus the pepper, wings. The beer was $6+ for domestic? The service was adequate once we were seated. It took a long time to get seated, though. The reason being the restaurant was short staffed to the extent that the servers were preoccupied with serving existing customers and let the finished tables remain messy for over 15 minutes. The management should address the staffing issue. The current situation only results in unhappy staffs and unhappy customers. Bernard Stanley is not a seafood or fine dining restaurant. What it serves is high quality pub food. Do not expect sophisticated cusines or fresh seafood, and you will enjoy the food just fine. As pub food goes, it is pricey. Or maybe St. John's is not a cheap town for dining out. read more

I love this place! I've been here 4-5 times and each time my meal has been outstanding and the service has been top notch. I don't write a lot of reviews but these folk deserve a shout out! It is easy to miss from the outside; just a nondescript brown door and a smallish sign claiming to be a "Gastropub". Rest assured the gastronomy part is well taken care of by the chefs and the pub atmosphere is bright and cheery due to the big windows and warm staff. Don't walk on by; open that brown door to one of the best food experiences that our city has to offer. So far I have had the tacos, the Mussels, pan fried cod, cod tongues and the pork belly burger. I am determined to eat my way through their entire menu. Every meal has been a winner. The Caesars are really good too. If you are a tourist I suggest you try some local specialities like the cod tongues, toutons, pan fried cod and a Quidi Vidi beer. It is my birthday this coming Wednesday and my lovely wife asked me where I want to go to celebrate. We can pretty much go anywhere, there are lots of great food options in St. John's but I want to eat, drink and celebrate at the Bernard Stanley Gastropub. See you there! Learned about the duck burger from a list of best burgers in St Johns and it was one of the most interesting and delicious burgers I have ever had. This is one happy American ! I got the southern fried chicken with chipotle aioli, mozz,tom, red onion and lettuce on a seseme bun! Fresh chicken dredged in flour, not frozen! With pickles and kettle chips, both I believe are house made. Extremely attentive and friendly staff with a fantastic music selection! Again we went here based on yelp reviews and we were not disappointed! We called to make a reservation and they were so busy they didn't answer the phone. We risked it and found a nice little place bursting with people. We had to wait 45 minutes to get in but it was worth the wait! I started with a Caesar. Very nicely spiced. Served in mason jar. I tried their calamari. My kids and I try every calamari in restaurants to see if they match the gold standard from Cafe Trattoria Italia in Ottawa. None of them ever do until tonight. Not the least bit rubbery! Light and fresh. Lemons on the side. Glorious! $12 For mains, I had a small plates of surf and turf. This was shrimp in a buffalo wing sauce, sliced steak done rare over a bed of potato straws. $(14). Excellent! My partner had the duck burger with a blueberry ketchup and a whole lot of other flavours ($16). He said it was the best burger he has ever had. Very intrigued by the flavour profile. His daughter had the peanut crusted salmon for $30. It was a very large portion (6oz) over steamed vegetables. We finished the night with a Rutabaga carrot cake with three forks. Divine. Solid comfort food and friendly service. Unlike most other pubs, it's well lit from windows on three sides. This is especially welcome for lunch on a sunny day. I've only eaten here for lunch, and it seems to be a local favorite place. It's usually packed with a relaxed-looking crowd. I'm a big veggie burger fan, and the one here is excellent. I cannot say enough about how hospitable the staff is. I can think of many dinner options in St. John's that I would recommend to visitors, but when it comes to breakfast-brunch-lunch, this is the top of my list. read more

Always on the lookout for something new in this city, we knew some people that were already here so we joined to check it out. Truthfully, I had walked by the unassuming front before and not really realized it was there. Interesting place - I have mixed reviews but still gave it 4 stars. Luckily we arrived during happy hour and were able to take advantage of $5 specials. The prices went up a little bit after, but not by much. It was also Taco Tuesday, taken advantage of by a few of the people at our table. Certain tacos definitely looked better than others. Here's the kinda odd thing about this place - the prices either went from reasonable to incredibly expensive. You either ate in the $10-$12 range, or the $35-$45. I was feeling wealthy that night and decided to have the ribeye steak. It was HUGE, well prepared and yummy. Across from me the coconut fish came out looking delicious as well. Everything at the table looked pretty decent. Did I enjoy it? Yes. The prices are a bit too high for me to be a regular customer, but it was nice to try something new. read more

Friends suggested this restaurant as it serves brunch until 4PM. Great welcome to the restaurant as we braved a winter storm to start the day. Great selection for brunch. Tried the Toutons for the first time, and it will not be the last! I tried the Breakfast poutine that was to die for. I highly recommend it. Portion sizes are also very good. Will come back here on my next visit to this city. Absolutely fantastic. We were in St Johns for 3 nights and ate here twice. We enjoyed Wings and Mussel night so much and couldn't wait to come back. Friendly waitstaff and the kitchen crew should be applauded, complex flavors combined with familiar favorites. My only pet peeve was: more ice in the cocktails when it's summer! read more

Wandered in for the February burger challenge. Couldn't be happier with the burger or the pub. Have been back a few times now and the food doesn't disappoint. Can't say I was happy with my first foray into cod tongues, but nothing to do with the restaurant and everything to do with the texture of... well... cod tongues. Their take on Tex mex however, is likely the best in St John's right now. Tacos are to die - salmon, chicken, vegetarian - and I still cannot say a single bad thing about the burgers. We ate here on a visit to St. John's. We really enjoyed the food. There was a very wide selection of interesting choices. Ultimately both my partner and I had the Fish and Chips. However my partner also had the shrimp tacos, as an appetizer. Everything was really tasty. The beer was delicious. The bar was not too noisy, granted we were not there terribly late. We did not have a reservation however we were seated anyway quickly. All in all a great choice, easy for us to get to. Not too expensive either. read more
