Gayle and I recently visited the Yellow Belly Brewery for a late Sunday lunch after a long drive back from the Trinity Peninsula. After the last few days at Dildo and Port Rexton, why not another Brew Pub/Public House? The Yellow Belly Brewery building is (located at the junction of George and Water) consists of distinctive multi-story stone and masonry architecture. Apparently, the building survived the Great John's Fire of 1892 and maybe brings forth historical bustling street images of Irish immigrants and others integral to Newfoundland history. Gayle and I were lucky to get in during a relatively busy time. Our seating was comfortable and welcoming, accented by a very attentive and friendly waiter. The menu features wood-fired pizzas, burgers, seafood, and more. And of course were were here for the beer too. Gayle went for the tasting selection, while I ordered a wee pint. Our beers were really good, with no clinkers in the bunch. I really enjoyed my YellowBelly Burger (with Blue Cheese), but skipped the fries in favor of a salad. We tried to come the night before as a walk in and got turned away by here (okay, sure it was busy) she told us to book a reservation. Food was terrible. I have eaten at the yellow belly restaurant at the airport and the food was amazing so I went to the restaurant downtown St. John's and what a disappointment. I ordered the same as I ordered before. The margarita pizza and fish bites. Both awful and I mentioned it to the server and she said I guess you will have to eat at the airport next time. My wife had a burger and poutine and had to pay $6 extra just to get cheese and bacon plus the extra for poutine. The burger was not good and was definitely a frozen patty. I will definitely not eat there again. Hopefully the homeless lady I gave half my meal to on the way out enjoyed it more than I did read more

First things first: if its a weekend night make a reservation, it's a necessity for this place. This place is good for big groups, and an especially good place to have a drink with 4-5 or 10 of your friends. They have features specials per the season and a wide range menu from calamari to Korean style Korean wraps. Everything is decently priced but the house entrees get a little pricy for a night out especially with drinks on top. The main reason for a lower rating was the staff while they weren't rude, they were inattentive. At the beginning of the night we walked in and having not been there before didn't know whether to seat ourselves or wait. We ended up just walking upstairs and weren't seated, went back down, and waited at the counter where one employee was busy and the other one, not busy stared at me for three minutes even after prompting and questions so we just had to wait for the other lady to finish with the other customer. Once we sat down we did not get much attention other than to receive our food and drinks and at the end of the meal ended up having to go to the counter to pay. Maybe I'll be back a different night and hope for different staff? But I don't have much favour towards this place. read more

3-3.5 this is a something for everyone kind of place. For such a large place it felt surprisingly cozy. High ceilings, lots of room between tables, but beautiful exposed brick, beams and chandeliers. There are multiple levels. I was hoping to check out the basement "Underbelly" but that part was closed for lunch. We chose to sit upstairs. Although none of us drank, due to circumstance I was temporarily visually impaired when we visited and found the stairs a bit tricky, so no doubt in my mind the stairs would be trouble for anyone drinking. This is a brewery... Washrooms were plentiful and nice. Loved the exposed brick in there. For lunch we had: Margarita pizza Vegetarian nachos Classic burger with fries Eggplant burger with salad Turkey burger with guacamole Pretzel The food was good but for the pretzel which I would give a hard pass to next time. It wasn't pretty it just looked that way. Service was friendly and helpful. Our server made us chuckle when she said it was a really hot day (28C). This is a pretty well know pub/place to eat downtown St. John's, and I'd been here a couple times when I used to live in St. John's. It's in a pretty central location downtown, and the outside of the building is pretty scenic (can see part of the brewery). I headed here with a couple friends for a lunchtime class reunion, and we got seated in the upstairs area for larger groups. I order the lunchtime special which was a spicy cod burger with quinoa salad ($15), and was disappointed that my order came unfinished. What I mean is that, they messed up our burgers (3/8 of group) and only put fish and lettuce inside. We were given a plate of pickle, tomato, and mayonnaise to spread on our burger ourselves, and weren't really given a proper apology :( The burger was lukewarm by the time they bought the toppings out (our group politely waited to eat for us), and the fish wasn't even that tasty. The salad was alright. I ordered it because the rest of the lunch menu looked pretty mediocre, but I guess ordering a special increases the likelihood of them messing up. Overall, this place is more well known for its variety of drinks, and not quality of food. I'd recommend adding a couple more original items to the pub menu, instead of relying on a special that can be hit or miss each day. read more

The ambience is an added bonus. If you love history, try to make the tour. Yellowbelly Beer Sampler | Wexford Wheat, YellowBelly Pale Ale, Fighting Irish Red Ale, St. John's Stout, Tilt Cove Pale Ale (Seasonal) -My favorite was the red ale since it was more unique than the other samples and I love anything red :) The St. John's Stout was far too bold and dark for me; it tastes like Guinness. Fresh Steamed Mussels | Coconut milk, red curry, julienne vegetables -The mussels came highly recommended by our server, Matt. These exceeded our already high expectations. BEST MUSSELS EVER...even better than the ones I've had in Belgium which is the birthplace of moules-frites. Each mussel was juicy and plump; curry sauce was very flavourful. This was a big surprise for me since I had pegged Yellowbelly for a pub/bar coming in...which is the last place you would expect to serve good curry sauce. Save the leftover curry sauce for dipping the bread that came with it. Catalan Calamari | Crispy fried squid, lime chili aioli dip -Calamari was fresh and tasty, but nothing out of ordinary. Since St Johns is a city where fresh seafood is the norm, I would expect nothing less. Fig-Proscuitto Arugula Pizza | Rosemary olive oil, fig jam, 3 cheese blend, prosciutto, tossed arugula, shaved parmesan -Situated on the second floor is a wood fire pizza oven that churns out perfectly delicious pizza. The crust is light, thin and crispy but still maintains some chewiness - reminiscent of freshly baked naan. If you got steamed mussels as I had recommended above, dip the pizza crust ends into the curry sauce and prepare to be amazed. St. John's Stout Short Ribs | Braised short rib, SJS gravy, sweet apricot and tomato, mashed potato, seasonal vegetable -These ribs were slow-cooked for a very long time (I forgot the exact number of hours our server mentioned, after all the beer I had). The proof is in the pudding - these are as fork tender and melt-in-your-mouth as they come. The portion is also large and good enough for sharing. Pan-Seared Cod (Daily special) | Lobster white wine cream sauce -Cod is the most popular fish in St. Johns and it is hard to find a restaurant that will screw up a cod dish. The cod was cooked perfectly and I loved the lobster cream sauce since it had generous morsels of lobster. My favorite dish was the Fresh Steamed Mussels, hands down. However, one cannot have mussels without ordering one of the wood fire rustic pizza. They just pair so well together...like wine and cheese...or Sonny and Cher. read more
