Cute little bakery on the Main Street in St.Johns Newfoundland. We initial spotted this place because of the sign that read over 300000 fish cakes sold, baked never fried. My husband and I love fish cakes so we had to give them a try. They were cod fish cakes, baked just like the window said. They do sell out fast so call to check if it's available or come earlier in the day. They were really good, a little more on the potato side if that's what you're into, but still delicious. The Cuban on ciabatta was genuinely one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Bread toasted to perfection and the ingredients within were all fresh and moist, where I find dryness to be where a lot of folks fall short on the Cuban. Killer latte as well! read more

Rocket Bakery used to be my favourite spot years ago. The past 5-6 years the food is just not up to par. The soups are abysmal and some of the desserts just don't taste good, especially the lemon tart, the lemon cake and chocolate cake. The pastries are nice, however. The past few years the service has gone way downhill. The wait staff are often rude and unaccommodating. Rocket Bakery has become a very "woke" business. I usually love trying local cafés when traveling, but I really wish I hadn't walked into this one. I ordered several sandwiches, pastries, and two coffees for take-out. When the coffees were brought to me, I politely asked if they had a tray. The male barista ignored me and walked away. Thinking he hadn't heard, I asked the cashier, but then noticed the barista mumbling and glaring at me with what felt like hostility. While waiting for my food, he continued giving me unfriendly looks, which made the whole experience very uncomfortable. The other staff members were polite and professional, but his behavior stood out in a negative way. It left me feeling unwelcome and questioning whether I could even trust the drinks I had just purchased. I can't comment on the food, since I gave it away to my relatives, but for me, the experience was unpleasant enough that I wouldn't recommend. read more

The service was pathetic. The food is OK. In fact, if service wasn't a problem I would consider coming back. But this is bad service to the point that the staff ignored us as if we didn't exist and literally they wouldn't even make eye contact. Plus it took nearly 10 minutes just to be able to place our order and that was while we were standing at the order counter. Plus to make it worse , the owner responded to a poor review I put up on Google with the most pro forma fake response I've seen in a while. Not really addressing the issue but doing what the book tells you to do which is apologize even though you don't actually mean it. so while I gave it three stars to be nice on Google I'm giving it one star because of the follow up being as poorly done as it was. read more

Visited on Sunday morning (Mother's Day) when in town for a conference. The cafe had lots of seating and the food was really yummy but the service was horrible. A colleague and I both ordered a breakfast sandwich and a latte. Her coffee was brought to the table about 5 min later, followed by our food. A customer next to us noted to the barista that she was missing a coffee and he said it's coming. After like 10 min later I went up for the both of us and he was very rude. We eventually got our coffees with a bit of a huff. Also notable that I ordered a bagel sandwich and the table next to us ordered a biscuit sandwich. We both received the wrong bread on the bottom... not horrible, but odd. Probably won't return. read more

Ive never been so disappointed in a sandwich before, they claim their food is fresh yet the Cuban sandwich comes frozen? I am writing this review because the sandwich is way over priced and to be quite frank a very cheap attempt at a Cuban sandwich. The meat portions are far to expensive for the price (four pieces of Black Forest ham and probably less then an oz of pork). 0/10 Would not recommend. I recently took my two children for a visit here as I had heard some good things about this place. We planned on getting some baked goods. When we went to the baked good section I'm estimating that it was perhaps 90% empty. Many items were completely sold out. There was very little to choose from. My kids both wanted cinnamon buns however there was only one tired looking cinnamon bun left. When I asked if a fresh batch would be coming out the service replied that no more were coming. We ordered the lonely looking bun with some sort of carrot cake baked good. I asked the clerk if the cinnamon bun could be heated for the kids and he replied that this would not be possible. I also ordered a cup of coffee. We shared the two baked goods between the three of us. They both tasted as if they were on the verge of going bad and were semi-stale. None of us were very impressed by the quality of the food. I can only describe the baked goods as being below average at best. The quality of the coffee was mediocre to below average. Furthermore, the cost of the food seemed exorbitant in relation to its quality. I believe the cost of these three items was close to $20. And or course, the service expects a tip (like everywhere else nowadays) even though table service is not provided. The atmosphere of the dining area presented as being as tired as the food we ordered. I'm not sure if any two tables matched and the furniture appeared heavily aged and damaged. While the dining area wasn't seedy it was far from presenting as being modern, fresh, and comfortable. Following this experience, I took my kids to Dough By's in CBS. They had many cinnamon buns, the buns were fresh, the cost was significantly less, and the quality was far superior to the one we shared at The Rocket. There wasn't a dining area there. However, the experience was far superior. I am quite amazed at the number of positive reviews this place has received on Google reviews. I have discussed my experience with others who have had similar experiences. I don't plan on returning here. read more

Tried the famous homemade Flakie but was disappointed that it was pretty much frozen. What's that? You wouldn't expect there to be a hip and modern bakery/coffee/sandwich shop in downtown St. John's? Well then, you're a stereotyping jerk like myself, congrats! Rocket is bright an welcoming with a light colour palette on the walls, likely one of the many permutations of white that my gender is unaware of until we move in a with a significant other and have to look at dozens of paint samples that look exactly the same. With high ceilings in a renovated old building, the atmosphere alone makes you feel good. Quirky knickknacks add to the feel, with racks of random things for sale between the sandwich side and bakery side, and retro items along the walls complete the feel. There's a good amount of people milling around at lunch time and my buddy and I grab numbers and mull over the menu board. I settle on a tasty sounding meatloaf flat bread sandwich, but when it comes time to order, they're out. As they roast their own chicken in house, this seems like a solid back up and I go for the roast chicken flat bread. I move down the line and get my sandwich topped the way I want, ala Subway, but much more enjoyable and with friendly hipster staff instead of people that look like they'd rather be anywhere else than working at Subway. Once our sandwiches are complete, my companion and I sit down in the room around the corner, surrounded by a couple walls of retro vegetable and fruit cans, and mix matched tables with mix-matched chairs. The sandwich is a work of art. The chicken is plentiful and moist, with a nice roasted flavour. Red onions and mixed greens add a nice zing to the sandwich, especially the king of all greens, arugula. Although I should have gotten cheddar instead of mozza to stand up to these flavours, that one is on me. With friendly staff, great food and decor, Rocket is where you want to be when you're feeling hungry during business hours in downtown St. John's. read more

My BF's been working in St. John's for a few months and of course first thing I ask when he gets there is "is there a good coffee shop?" (NOT Timmy's, Starbucks or any other chains) and he tells me about the Rocket right across his building that serves Phil and Sebastian, and I know it has to be good. A few months later I finally make my way out to St. John's after traveling for 2 weeks in Europe. It's April and still -5 with 4ft snow banks (worst winter of all time everyone's told me, my luck) and being a west coaster I locked myself inside for 3 days avoiding the snow. So after mediocre coffee in Europe and zero coffee trapped inside, I wanted a good Cappuccino, badly. And I found an amazing Capp at The Rocket. I actually had two, as the first one was so good. I would have got 3 but I had to cut myself off to avoid heart palpitations while on vacation. These guys are definitely making P&S proud, as they were my go to coffee shop when I lived in Calgary. I also had the APPLE CINNAMON SCONE with caramel drizzle. Very nice, not as rich and buttery as some (which is a good thing for me at least) and the perfect sweetness. Interior decor is rustic "shabby chic" but very clean which I appreciate. Lots of seating on the other side of the shop. Staff are friendly and attentive with that St. John's hospitality, and the man at the pastry window was nice enough to tell me his recommendations and told me about the pastries for the day which I appreciated. They also serve lunch, soups, salads, sandwiches (I'll definitely be back to update on this) as well as a "market" with tea, jams and other trinkets. I'll definitely be back! Recently opened this place has much to offer. A large selection of breads, pastries, cakes, coffee and tea, beverages, and other food. There is ample seating in the other room. I came in multiple times and tried a few things: Croissant: Extremely delicious one of the best I've ever had. They also have chocolate ones too. Hot Chocolate: Made with home made ganache, so yummy! Espresso Coffee: Fresh tasting coffee with some pretty latte art to top it off. Vanilla Cupcake with Buttercream Frosting: Probably one of the worst cupcakes I've ever eaten. The frosting was not good and had a bad taste. There was more frosting than cake. I'm a frosting lover but thats way too much. The cake tasted like lemon and was not very moist, but it was supposed to be vanilla so that was a little strange. I decided on 4 stars instead of 3 solely based on the amazing croissants. I've found my St. John's happy place. And likely yours as well. Rocket is one part espresso bar, one part bakery, one part lunch mecca all wrapped up in a space with as much charm as you could ever hope for. The retro vibe mixed with the hip crowd and wonderful products make it a no-brainer for any visit. The first time I popped my head in, I stumbled upon an impromptu fiddle jam sesh. You can't beat it! It gets crowded as busy as any lunch destination would but it's better managed with a number system - so long as you remembers to grab yours out of the retro toaster. Do that, then line up for your Phil & Sebastian espresso and you'll be sipping by the time your number's up. My double Americano was so smooth I almost thought it was a latte and my hummus and veggie sandwich on whole wheat was a dose of fresh baked heaven. St. John's? I'm gonna be honest, the Aussie barista was one of the main reasons we kept coming back here lol We probably could have gotten tea anywhere really, but who doesn't want to chat away with a charming gentleman? The food is pretty decent too. Crusty croissants, homemade tomato soup and made to order sandwiches were things we enjoyed during our visits. The Almond croissant was light, flaky and not overpowering. I would get it again. And again! The cinnamon bun was good. Nothing special. The green onion and cheese biscuit was good. I was in St. John's for a 24 hour layover, and found out about this place through Yelp. It was a good recommendation. There was an extensive collection of soups, sandwiches, cakes, and some very friendly staff. I had some sort of chicken sandwich and coffee, and enjoyed both. I do feel the prices were slightly expensive, but I am not used to St. John's or what the standard prices are there, so I won't go on about that. :) Great bakery in an excellent location with friendly staff. This place is rustic, clean, and filled with lots of character. I came here looking for something vegan to eat and found the Protein Powerhouse Wrap and a coffee. The coffee was good and the wrap was pretty good too; it was crunchy, filled with good ingredients like firm tofu, edamame, green peas, and walnuts (sounds strange but really good!). The wrap is packaged and not made to order, but was made on the day I came as indicated on the label. I would come here again if I was looking for something on the lighter side to eat, but definitely save my hunger for other restaurants in the city (something that's made to order, hot, and bigger portioned). read more

As per usual, I stopped in because this was the highest rated lunch spot in town. The place is huge! The left side when you walk in is a full bakery, coffee stand, and sandwich/food shop. The other side is all seating. You head in and order what you'd like from the counter and then decide if you want to eat it here or take it to go. The menu changes each week, giving you the impression that it's all fresh, which I thoroughly appreciate. I ordered the weekly grill sandwich, which was a chicken club panini. Super tasty and hit the spot. The staff was super friendly and efficient. Definitely a good spot for a quick cafe lunch. read more

There is nothing I like more in the whole world than finding a great independent coffee house that serves excellent cappuccino. It's easy in a place like New York or Vancouver or Toronto, but I wondered whether St. John's would have such a place. Answer: It does. Let me go one further, the Rocket serves one of the creamiest, richest cappuccinos I have had anywhere in the world. As well, they have a phenomenal selection of baked goods, including pain au chocolat and regular croissants. The Rocket totally rocks. Great atmosphere. Great coffee. And free wifi. Super cute and funky place that clearly has a community vibe. I've only had breakfast and a sweet, with very large pots of tea. The breakfast granola is made in house and full of flavor. I do wish the fruit salad was more interesting and slightly larger. I also ordered the lemon tart for an afternoon bite (after an exceptionally disappointing lunch at another restaurant) and it was very solid and so so pretty. A little too sweet overall for my tastes, I would have liked a slight more bite to my lemon curd, but overall a very good dessert. I do wish the ordering and where to go was a little easier, and pick up wasn't at the front doors- it gets very crowded and you're ducking people coming, as you're waiting and grabbing your tea/ coffee, then walking across the busy entry to pick up your pastry and then to your seat in the next room. With a large tray it feels a bit like a video game. Logistics aside, great place to stop in for easy breakfest or afternoon sweet. read more
