Best coffee in St John's, hands down. I'm not talking drip coffee... I mean proper, espresso based coffees. Not too acidic, smooth and flavourful. Thank you to manager Troy, who hails from the lovely state of Queensland, Australia, baristas know how to make a coffee (at least that's what I think!). At the bottom of signal hill, it's on the way from a hike, and not too far out of the way if you want to pick a coffee up on the way to work. The Battery Cafe seems to be sort of a landmark in St John's. It's right at the corner where people who are driving to Signal Hill must pass by. We walked to both places so driving and parking was not a problem. Interestingly there were a lot of classic vehicles going by. You can order beer, cocktails, soup, sandwiches and even coffee. We sat outside at the deck. It was really nice to sit and watch the people, cars and motorcycles pass by. The sandwiches ar interesting and not oversized or over priced. There is secure WiFi although it seemed to have difficulty reaching the deck. If you walked to Signal Hill you should stop at the Battery Cafe because you'll walk right past it and you deserve it. The Newfoundland sundae with jam and ice cream is worth ordering on a warm day. read more

This seems to be a popular neighborhood cafe, and it's on the way to Signal Hill. I got the salmon cream cheese bagel. The bagel is a bit on the smaller side than what I am used to, but it still hit the spot. The interior is a bit eclectic, and there are some picnic benches you can sit at outside. You can also order inside or outside. read more

We dropped by here for a quick breakfast since we had time before boarding our Hop-on Hop-off bus tour. The menu is simple, no-frills with relatively quick service. I appreciate that the sandwich isn't overly saucy, making it easier to eat on the go without a mess. Between the two options, I prefer the bagel as the cream cheese adds a satisfying bite and makes it less dry compared to the chicken sandwich. This restaurant is located in a house at the corner of the street, with two patio sections on either side. When you walk in, it appears cozy with limited seating. However, if you walk to the right through the door, there is ample seating next door and a self-serve water station. read more

Went in for a cappuccino and a smoked salmon bagel at lunch time .Had to wait for about 30 mins for my cappuccino and another 15 mins for my Bagel. Was very disappointed in the time I had to wait and the bagel wasn't like they used to be ,the bagel was what looked to be store bought not what they used to be (Montreal) and it wasn't toasted and they skimped on the S Salmon . This cozy cafe overlooking the water and right on the path to Signal Hill was one of my favorite places for lattes and breakfast food while I was staying at St. John's for a month during the summer of 2023. Friendly service, tasty vegetarian breakfast sandwiches and delicious iced lattes. I spent time there working on my laptop as well (some seats have access to outlets) and never felt rushed by anyone on the staff. Overall, my favorite coffee joint in the city! read more

Went to the battery cafe for breakfast this morning. Wow and yummy. We had their porridge. Wear a treat. It was full of seeds, nuts and fruit. Topped it off with a dark roast brewed coffeee. Great staff. Friendly service. It's a small place, so you might have to wait for a seat during busy times. They were hopping with the pre lunch business today. Nice find! read more

great cafe! service was wonderful (currently, basically you walk up to a window and order then take over a table) and the location is very convenient to a lot of sights nearby. my friend and i split a chicken pesto sandwich (delicious) as a snack and i ordered a lemonade while she got some coffee. have absolutely no regrets about our little pit stop. read more

This little and sophisticated gem competes very, very well with the cafes in Toronto. There are choices of light and dark coffee. I opted for light. Not bitter or acidic. I drank it black, and I enjoyed it. There was no need for milk or sugar. Nice pastry selection for morning bites. read more

I love this cafe. I stopped in every morning while I was staying in St. John's. They have your typical cafe drinks like coffee and tea, plus a few sandwiches and they serve beer and wine. They have great local musicians on live music nights. It's small but cosy. read more

Best coffee in St John's. Period. It's Detour coffee, roasted in Burlington Ontario and they tend to brew it strong, which is how I personally like it. The food is not cheap, but in this case you get what you pay for. The staff tend to be young and friendly, and the owner is clearly someone who gives back to his community. The coffeehouse itself is quite small, quaint, but actually has seating for about 15 people inside, and nice picnic tables outside with a view of Signal Hill and the Narrows. They also have free wifi and power outlets, which is a real plus for some of us! Kiddy-corner to the café is a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant called "International Flavours" which happens to be the best ethnic Indian/Pakistani food in town (in my humble opinion). read more
