My go-to spot whenever I visit YYT. Fish and poutine with the famous St. John's dressing. Yum.

A visit to St. John's doesn't seem to be complete without eating fish and chips at least once. This place makes theirs with cod and even has cod tongue and cheeks. I opted to get the 2 piece combo with fries and onion rings. It's a generous portion size. The fish was nicely fried. Crispy shell and tender flaky meat on the inside. Excellent fries and onion rings. The combo also comes with a fountain pop and a snowball dessert. Service was very friendly and attentive. The interior very casual and bare bones. The cod was dry and didn't taste like it was fresh. The shrimp was overcooked. The batter was too thick and everything was far too greasy. In fact food tadted like the cooking oil had Beraldo used far too long. read more

This review is for a Cod fish and chip. The qualifier is necessary, and I will explain later. No foodie trip to NFLD is completed without a Cod fish and chip. The Cod fish and chips ($5) I had at Ches's was made of a piece of very fresh and meaty cod fillet. I never had better and fresher​. The batter was good enough. It was not oily, not thick and crispy enough. I have had better batter, but this batter was above average IMO. The tartar sauce was good. The fries were crispy but a tad dry. As far as battered Cod fish fillet goes, this is 4-starred food and what an extraordinary value. Still, Cod is no Halibut. If you rate a fresh Cod fillet against a fresh Halibut one, Halibut likely fares better. Yet Ches is a Newfoundlander. His shop only carries Cod. read more

We three enjoyed the 3 piece cod and chips which we shared as a mid afternoon lunch. Fresh local cod was moist and the batter had decent crunch. PEI fries were sweet and a fine match. Tartar sauce was very good and squeeze-bottled instead of small packaged. The iceberg beer was quite light bodied and refreshing. Service was friendly and our family enjoyed our visit. read more

Before even stepping foot on the Rock I had heard about the infamous Ches'. So, what to do when you've spent a Saturday night on George Street and all other food vendors have huge line ups? You call a cab and have them drop by Ches' Fish & Chips :-) Three of us found ourselves inside this St. John's icon not long before closing time and ordered ourselves fries to enjoy on the cab ride home. We also sweetened the cabby's deal by ordering him an order as well. While not the best fries I've ever eaten by a long shot, they served the purpose of filling that late night hunger void and had just enough grease to keep a drunk happy. One of my favourite memories is sitting on our host's front porch in the wee hours of the morning finishing up our cardboard container of Ches' fries and reminiscing about the fun night we had had. My travel partner/friend and I marked Ches's as a "must do" for dinner during one of our nights in St. John's, and when we did try it, we found it to be a tasty and satisfying meal, providing us a "real taste of Newfoundland", but not the best we had in the area...that distinction belongs to the fish 'n chips that we had at the Duke of Duckworth pub downtown. As for Ches's, my friend had a 2-piece order of classic fish (cod) 'n chips, while I had the salmon bites 'n chips. We both ordered our chips in the preferred local style with dressing and gravy. Both dishes were tasty and served hot and fresh, and the service was attentive. However, two evenings earlier we had had fish 'n chips at the Duke of Duckworth, which set a higher standard of flakier and less greasy-tasting, and so while Ches's was good it didn't measure up. read more

I ordered just the chips dressing and gravy. I have ordered from here before but this time the chips were dry as if they had been refried at least once maybe more. For the price paid ,nothing like that should ever show up on your plate. I will give them another try and see if it was a one of but if the quality has really eroded ,there are a few out there better to try. Update. Holy cow, I had heard about Chess's before I even arrived in St. Johns but MAN! It was soo good! Terribly unhealthy and terribly greasy but Terribly delicious! Thank god I don't live anywhere near it or I would be as big as a house. Decent food the fish was fantastic and the rest was marginal. I'm not sure why Newfie's and others rave about soggy fries they were hot and fresh but just a greasy soggy mess. Had fin and feather, fish and chicken a both were great. Also had chicken splits, wings, which were average and the stuffed cod which was tasty. Service was marginal and didn't seem interested in talking at all. The place sort of feels like and resembles a cafeteria and is in the heart of a strip Mall. Ches' has some how gotten the label as the one place you have to try for all tourist. Not my tourist! It's a decent greasy feed but for fish and chips there are so many better options. I find they'll be serving fresh frozen cod when many others have fresh, and its just not the same. read more
