Further storage space was also required for media. Time for a glass of wine and some lateral thinking... One of those 3-level glass stands did not pass muster, since you can view all the cabling as well as the TV, like it or not. A minimalist solution was called for, but one that was [--------] across, so that all the crap could be stored in an accessible, operable but not unsightly way. The Net yielded little satisfaction. Anything that most companies had in that size was not only very expensive, but also boringly uninspired in that good old 'G-plan' look. Ideal to suit the magnolia wallpaper. ;-) Suddenly bingo! On the Net, I found these guys who were down the road in Windsor. They offer high-quality inspirational Oriental, Japanese and Contemporary furniture. Check the site! If they don't have it in stock, you might have to wait for it to slowly sail from China in a junk (ours took 3-months), but I wanted it, I was going to have it and I bloody got it! Very helpful people: order tracking on their site, order confirmation mailed as a PDF etc. I spent a long time laid on the floor connecting things up and using some rather ripe language, but it's in now. The amp will eventually go under the record deck for ease of access. Disadvantages? You have to open the left hand door (but only a tiny bit) so you can tell Sky what you want to watch. (Added): The friendly guy at the store told me you can buy a discreet unobtrusive widget called a 'Skye Eye' which will sit on top for 'closed-doors viewing'. You can only store CDs flat in those drawers, but that's no issue, because I have a separate stand for them located otherwhere. Excellent company now I want a Han-dynasty lacquered cabinet to store bogrolls in and a smaller one would do nicely for one's stash. If you live down this way, check them out. On my way in, I noticed a soda sitting on a gorgeous desk/secretary so I picked it up thinking some rude customer had deposited it there. When I took it to the owner, he declared that I had ruined his drink by handling it near the lid. Not sure which was more surprising, his reaction or the discovery that he had left a cold beverage to condense on a wooden "antique". Regardless, I left immediately so as to not inconvenience him further.

Antiques on High has the proper smell of old things and has an interesting range of antiques. Rather than focusing on big pieces of furniture, which so many antique shops do, it uses its space wisely to host: Jewellery, books, records, clothes, ornaments, pictures, maps and various collectables. The condition of the goods varies, but they're priced fairly reasonably. I find it's best to go in without the aim of buying something in particular, but just to browse. I can't say anything has ever caught my eye enough to want to buy it, but I've seen plenty of other people who have found the perfect addition to their home or the ideal gift. The best bit is the craft section, where there's a gallery of jewellery, leather, pottery, glass and art in general, all produced locally and all promising to be valuable antiques in the future. There's a great range in here and you can get something for less than a pound or spend hundreds of pounds. Equally, you can pop in for a few minutes or spend hours browsing - it's almost like a mini museum. If you like antique shops, this won't disappoint; if you've never been in one, try approaching it. Don't be put off by the prison-like bars in the windows; the staff are friendly and it's a different world inside.

I…read moredon't know very much about antiques, and I am normally put off by the prices, but I spent absolutely ages in here: there was a lot of great stuff, mostly very affordable. The jewellery and accessories were especially good; there was a gold bangle watch in there for only £25. Upstairs on the gallery they had a few 1930's fur stoles, mink and fox for between £20 and £40. Cheap as chips, considering! Plus the stuff was all laid out nicely in cabinets. I'm definitely going to come back when I need to buy some presents for people. You could get something really special at a decent price.

Her first answer was that the books were "prop pieces" but that she would be willing to sell the book for £5. Wow. It was published in 1862. I am happy to have found the book and happy with the service in this shop.

I shop here for antique gifts for friends and family, and the owners are always helpful and knowledgeable. Very reasonable prices too. The Antique Centre is not quite what it used to be, but the Jays Nest is reason enough to pop in if you're looking for unusual gifts that have some history!
