Cramped, loads of rubbish to pick through, a minimalist's nightmare. Yes. It's great!

Every Saturday and Sunday, loads of stuff from £2 grab boxes full of stuff (I got a totally decent…read morepair of cufflinks for £4...) to properly sorted vintage clothes. There's even a bit of stuff for blokes, and at reasonable prices, too. Worth a trip out every now and then-- it's a bit hit or miss, as these things always are, but it's off the beaten track enough that you're likely to find some nice stuff.

The clock tower market has really come into its own over the last few years. But this isn't…read morenecessarily a good thing. It's doing well because the main outdoor market was closed down, and the stall vendors have either moved here, or to another market in London. Brick Lane is picking up a lot of them. Until a year ago, I wouldn't even bother walking around this place, it just wasn't worth the time. And then something happened. I'd go by on the bus and see a few vintage handbags out of the window, I'd spy some decent china instead of the rubbish that used to be there, and before I knew it I was being hidden be four market girls while I undressed in the middle of Greenwich to try on a vintage ball gown. I didn't buy it. And it was cold. I popped there at the weekend to help a male friend do some shopping, everyone was friendly, the stock was good and we left with very excellent bargains. There will always be something about a free bowtie that will brighten your day. If you've ever strolled by and thought there wasn't much here, do take another look. It might not get the same attention as the indoor market, but the guys here stock some good stuff.

After reading at Londonist…read more(http://londonist.com/2013/06/marc-gooderhams-paintings-of-londons-east-end.php) about a little exhibition at Townhouse Antiques near Spitalfields Market, I decided to take the journey from west to east and take a look myself. I enjoyed the paintings of London houses and streets by artist Marc Gooderham (http://www.marcgooderham.co.uk/). He focuses, in his words, on "the singular beauty to be found in those neglected buildings that have fallen into disrepair as the living city of London continues to evolve around them." While I was contemplating over the paintings and browsing the books on display, another guy with a cute dog, who also visited this exhibition space, took to the piano that was standing in one corner. His play made me stay a bit longer and I like this place even more. Besides showing inspiring London paintings, Townhouse Antiques also sells books and various other stuff. Randomly, one book caught my attention: One Lump or Two? - a book about tea filled with illustrations by British artist Edward Bawden and a "series of humorous limericks for Twinings Tea". It looks like a fun "essentially British" present. Although I do not know what exhibition is on at Townhouse Antiques at the moment, I was told that almost always something is on display. If you have never been to Townhouse Antiques, you should probably stop by when you are in the area, I am sure it will be worth the visit!

So maybe getting up at 4am is the best, as visiting at 9am (A REASONABLE HOUR, THANK YOU) meant that that Square was perhaps 1/2 full of stalls. Maybe the early bird does indeed, catch the worm but I shall never know. Anyway, this Market happens on Friday AM's. There are stalls selling acres of china, silver cutlery, lace and that one stall that sells royal commemorative tat that I salivate over. Not much furniture, mostly small collectible things. There's also a food stall or two, plus a nearby (slightly ghetto) Sainsbury's.

I found the place enormous and we did not need to go that early in the morning! Years passed by and I wanted to go again, I did not know why I let time pass so much! I could not believe what I saw, I thought I was mistaken but I was not, the place had shrunk, it is not even half of what it used to be! I got there by 10.00am and they were already packing up. I talked to one of the guys who had a stall and told me that I was in the right place, that the Council had bought part of the land to developers and the market had shrunk enormously. I found it very sad.

The menswear section is particularly strong and dominates most of the store with very reasonable Burberry marino wool v-necks and check shirts for only £15, and a vast selection of tweed and wool suits priced from £65 to £100. Wool hats are beautifully displayed on mannequin heads, whilst smaller accessories such as cuff links and handkerchiefs are kept behind glass cabinets. The womenswear selection is smaller- with only a few small rails devoted to evening wear. What pieces they do have though, are exquisite- I tried on a delicate green, silk 1940s tea-dress which for £65 was an absolute bargain. There is however a very good selection of outerwear- there are some beautiful fake-fur coats for under £75 and some immaculate raincoats for under £80. Everything in the shop is beautifully presented and smart. There is no rummaging through rails of rubbish to find items, just a few well-chosen, classic pieces displayed beautifully.

That said, there's a lot of stuff. All of the dresses are well looked after in those plastic cases, but I find that such a pain. I know it protects them blah blah blah. but I want to go through clothes being all touchy feely. It's part of the fun. I hate that I can't do that in here. The guys stuff seems better. The shirts are cool and the whole shop does the indie boy in Greenwich thing very well. It's pretty pricey in here, but that's because the stuff is very good quality. It's almost too good - there's something lovely about vintage clothes that need a little repairing maybe that's just me. Do go in and take a look around. You might not find the perfect piece, but you'll have fun trying on cool shades and hats. Which is an equally important part of shopping.
