After contacting a leasing agent from this complex and requesting information necessary about the application process and to provide a list of requirements and qualifications necessary to be eligible for possible tenancy aswell and a list of disqualifying issues in past or credit report in order to avoid throwing anymore money in the trash as many locations scam applicants out of application fees and credit checks for units they have already leased out or signed a new tenant to. Every location I have requested this information from besides this one were more than accommodating and even would provide a telephone number in which if we chose to make it easier we could call or text them directly. This unprofessional P.O.S. agent that responded to me after an obvious copy paste or automated response was initially sent to me had the nerve to cope an attitude with me when they completely ignored all my questions and requests and when I listed specific details of information I was mostly concerned about they snapped an attitude with me and told me to not apply with them or any other location as I wasn't obligated to do so and terminated the conversation with me. I have screenshots of this conversation but this app isn't allowing me to upload them for some unknown reason. Do not bother with these people because if this agent is in any which way or form a reflection of the type of professionalism you expect to face with the complex then you're wasting your time.... read more

This place is terrible when initially first reviewed and over the year got better. The apartment did not seem to be properly deep cleaned between tenants and the apartment manager is not on site most of the time so when things need to be done properly, it took many reminders just to get something repaired or completed. There were several times that the garbage was overflowing and the furniture from previous tenant not given instructions on what to do with their furniture and how to properly dispose of it through the City crew, was a health hazard in this place for the first few months, and eventually got better after sending instructions on how to manage these types of issues. Simply, things like that need to be resolved within 2-3 business days. This neighborhood apartment complex is in Japantown after all and there is a standard of cleanliness this neighborhood requires. After auditing their tenant payment system called Appfolio which seems to not be properly managed or watched, there were several overpayments that some tenants were being debited for that goes unchecked so this was brought to the attention of the property mortgage holder to make sure their automated system did not just take tenants money from their linked bank account considering there are a lot of elderly and families that are in this community. I hope they get that audited and properly watched soon because people work hard for their money and the last thing people need is the automated payment system called Appfolio to go unwatched or unmanned daily taking peoples' money from their bank accounts when not looking. That is illegal and problematic so their management really needs to step up to actually be on site and do the job of what properly managers actually do: watch the software and stop the machines from taking the peoples' money when not looking. There were some issues with some units like the management refusing to repair the doorbell upon moving in, and also the ventilation system in the kitchen is not properly installed because there is not a kitchen chimney vent so if a tenant makes a hot plate, it sets off the fire alarm because of the improper installation of the appliances and the lack of proper masonry construction with the basic things. There was some painting that is incomplete and so some of the units look very tacky and under construction still although it is already completed. So I'm unsure of the people that have done the work at this place but their main mortgage holder needs to check this place in person for a monthly inspection just to keep up with the zipcodes' quality standards for real estate quality control. Just look at who the neighbors are down the street. This place needs to be on par with the businesses on the same street because those people are very clean and tidy and their buildings are meeting and exceeding the building standards. This building was built before the 70's so there is still no reason why simple fixes like a doorbell repair would be refused or not repaired other than being lazy. Some people like old world charm and don't want to get one of those wireless doorbells from the electronic store because that is not really the same as a wired traditional doorbell. Over a few months, this place have gotten better after raising serious safety concerns regarding the homeless encampments and the wanderers considering this place is right next to an elementary school and very certain that parents do not want their children exposed to people suffering from street drugs and other things to stay safe. Let's hope they got the services that they needed and pray that this place keeps up with the basic standards of quality especially with making sure that this place stays kept well quality. There are some great things about this place, one is that that the entire landscape was redone and looks better and newer. There were some immediate safety enforcement when tenants raised concerns so that was really nice to know that the staff and the mortgage holder does actually care for the tenants and their concerns to sleep better at night. Other than this, the only thing that made it a 3 star and not a 5 star is the fact that Appfolio needs to be watched for to make sure it does not act like an automatic ill machine that eats the tenants' money without notifying the tenant what the reasons that it is doing so. The property manager would need to review this and make sure that it does not take any more than what the agreed upon amount is per the agreement. read more

I moved into Berkeley Square Apartments in August of 2013. From what I gathered, the apartments had just been purchased by a new owner who was renovating it. I moved into one of the newly remodeled apartments and it was the nicer than any other apartment I looked at! All hardwood floors, granite counter tops, new appliances and washer/dryer in unit. That is so hard to find in this city. And they are constantly improving. Since I moved in they have added security gates, more lighting and are upgrading apartments. The apartment manager, Vangie, is a sweetheart as well! Always has a smile on her face and a kind word to say. She really does make the apartments feel like home. And one of my favorite parts was how close to the San Jose Airport it is! I moved from Los Angeles and I am constantly flying home and the airport is literally two left turns fro the apartment. Only an $8 cab ride! I would recommend Berkeley Square to anyone moving to the San Jose Area. read more

Such an amazing place and small community. I love living here. I've almost completed my first 1 year lease and if my present situation doesn't change I'll renew it. The place has old world charm in a courtyard gated type of setting. The grounds are well kept and the staff is extremely responsive, vested and proactive. First of all, Vangie the property manager and Hector the maintenance manager are good people. Can't say enough great things about them. The apartment is also nicely updated/upgraded and issues upon move-in were addressed right away. Unfortunately, I have to lose a star due to construction annoyances. I understand they are renovating the property and that's a plus but it's still annoying that construction has been taking place since we moved in sometime late July. I'll spare everybody the details. I lived here for 10 months, I was so sad to go(due to work relocation) I actually cried hugging the manager vangie :) she is truly one of a kind. Eric is also just as nice, always willing to help even when I knocked on his door at midnight because I forgot my garage opener and the code!! OopsAnd he even helped load my trailer on to my uhaul three days ago!! The complex is so clean, and all the tenants are quiet and so nice. I have lived here for almost a month now and so far it has been a positive experience for me. The office manager, Vangie, has always been very helpful and nice, even the maintenance people are all very responsive. My studio apartment was completely renovated with hardwood flooring, awesome countertops and modern appliances such as fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher, washer and dryer and AC! I travel constantly for work so the W/D inside my unit help a lot, I just relax after long flight hours and just toss my dirty clothes. The location is also very close to everything, close to establishments, freeways, airport! I am very happy so far and I am positive it will stay that way for a long time :) read more

Best Management. I lived in a remodeled studio where you get washer, dryer and an AC is in unit. Great place to live. Garaged parking. People are super nice. Vengie is the best manger I've ever met. The manager is very nice and wants to always says yes and does then checks with the owner and of course comes back to tell you no.We were promised a screen door on move-in we are almost here year that has not been completed now she says she has to ask the owner. Upon move-in we did not have a stove so the manager said she would pay for a garage privacy wall , this to store my motorcycle then she checked with the owner and the owner came back and asked us to pay for it so on move-in we had no stove and then we paid for something that we were told they would take care of. We had a toilet leak they fixed the leak and still almost 6 months later the floor still has not been replaced. When it is hot outside in the 80s and 90s the apartment his 92 to 100 there is no AC of course when they started their improvements she promised all the old tenants the owner would be happy to put in air conditioning then of course 30 to 40 days later she came back and said the owner was not willing to do this we must pay for air-conditioning Unit and leave it behind when we move You do know how hard it is to find a well priced apartment unfortunately this is one of those it's priced okay but there are no amenities no dishwashers no garbage disposal's single pane windows no insulation no fans in bathrooms you gotta leave the window open to take a shower. NO STORAGE IN UNIT .The owner does not seem to want to help tenant that pay on time give any courtesies in making sure that our living experience is nice. In short if this is the type a living experience you're looking for Berkeley Square is your place. Oh my bad I almost forgot the best part they got a new check machine they took rent from us twice then they did not pay us back for over two months but they sure wanted their money on the first every month no matter how your bills were late they offered talk to the owner about helping us and writing a letter to our creditors. The condition of the property has had a decrease in presentation over the past few months . Vacant Units are being remodeled and updated at a crazy increase in rent . Example 700 sq ft currently 1650.00 remoldeled they asked 2400.00 and got 2000. 00 new tenant really wanted to pay no higher thAn 1900.00 but like us all after looking so long we settle. read more

I've lived here at Berkeley Square since July, 2014 and I absolutely enjoy it. Sure the building is old and there have been construction and upgrades since moving in, but it's only for the benefit of the tenants. The community is gated, garaged parking, pool, and coin operated wash/dry. What you see is what you get, if it's not there, don't expect it to magically appear unless you're gonna pay the extra price; hence, prior to moving in any place, do your homework, don't bash the property manager for your misunderstandings or mistakes. The area is convenient...everything from restaurants to schools, not to mention the airport and the only two casinos in San Jose are just blocks away. Transportation (VTA) is only a few steps away. The only downside, in my opinion, about living in apartments is that tenants are too close for comfort. We unfortunately got stuck living next to the most horrible complaining tenants who have the loudest barking dog. Yes pet friendly too! Lastly but certainly not least, Vangie is one of the sweetest and understanding persons you'll have as a property manager. read more

I have been living at Berkeley square apartments since March of 2017 and let me be the first to tell you it's the best apartment complex I've stayed at in San Jose. Vangie the property manger has been the most resourceful, caring, communicative, loving and understanding manager I have ever came across while living in San Jose since 2010. From the apartment appreciation and holidays parties she throws every year, too just being able to come in her office and talk about anything! I truly can say I'm blessed that I have came across meeting Vangie! The apartments are beautiful and the neighborhood is very peaceful. You are also conveniently a 2-3 minute drive from the airport and a 10 minute drive from downtown. There also is a light rail station literally a block away which is very useful as well. The property is well maintained of trash and safe with cameras and security. The maintenance man Eric is also very swift with any repairs you need done!
