    Berkeley Springs State Park
    Bruce K.

Located in the center of the town of Berkeley Springs, the state park is the home of a mineral spring that has been in use since Colonial times (and likely well beforehand by Native Americans). The park is renowned for its warm spring water, which flows at a constant temperature of 74.3 degrees. The park's Old Roman and Main bathhouses offer a wide selection of spa services, including massages, saunas, baths and showers. But if you're not a fan of those things, it's still very cool to walk through the park, shop at one of the nearby stores or just check out what may well have been George Washington's actual bath. Yes, the first POTUS was here back in the day as a land surveyor before all that hullabloo kicked off with the Redcoats and Crossing the Delaware. Very interesting history here, a pretty park with the baths and a swimming pool, much history. [Review 15566 overall - 49 in West Virginia - 1070 of 2021.]

Let me give some mad respect to whomever dug out the spot to put in a rather large parking area for us! For years we've been on side of this narrow dirt road. * Thank. (Virtual fist pump). This was 3 miles out and 3 miles back. The waterfall is around 1 mile mark. It's off to the right. *please understand, ricks are slippery whether they're wet ot not. How someone brings three toddlers here with no backpack, water or first aid is beyond me. I had to leave the area. But it was really nice. Very relaxing and you did have to hand/foot climb to get up there. Be careful please. I double backed and got on the A.T. Couple more miles to the secret cliff I saw in another Yelp post. :) . Lots of people walked by, no one knew I was there. I had it all to myself. Its better than the actual lookout. Anyway. I scanned the rocks for danger, shot some pics and sat down for water and dry crackers. I look over and there are 2 snakes curled up by a small tree about 6 feet from me. I spoke to them. "Thought you'd hide from me. I got you!" It was funny. I took a couple pics and kept my eyes on them. Only takes a second to lose track and they end up right at me saying, "HA got you back!" I sat a while then headed back down. I enjoyed it! I'd like to section hike and have a car waiting to take me back to my own car where I started. They should have an Uber Hikes App available for that. ;) This way I can hike for as far as I want without turning around to come straight back.

While I'm sure there is excellent hunting, fishing, trapping, hiking, camping - etc. - etc. - etc…read more going on here, we just came for the overlook. For years I've seen the signs, the same as everyone that traverses 68, about a scenic overlook, this time, it was finally time to see just how scenic is scenic. First off, super easy to find the overlook. Exit 64 off of 68, this applies to either direction, then it's just two right turns to the main park office. Plenty of offseason parking in winter, as you would expect, and there is good signage telling you where to go for the office, the overlook, outside seasonal restrooms and some of the nearby trails. From there it's maybe a fifty or sixty yard walk down a small sloped path to the wooden planked overlook. Kudos to the staff that even though it had just snowed the day prior, they had a small path cleared so that you could walk out on to the platform. Granted, the platform was also coated in thick ice, but that's another story. Excellent views of the forest landscape and of Fifteen Mile Creek. We didn't last long as even though it was sunny, it was still below freezing with a hell of a stiff breeze. On the way back up the trail we did stop briefly in the park office looking for a map as a souvenir/memento and while the door was open and there was a state vehicle parked outside (just our car and that one), nobody was there so we left as it felt...odd. The park itself is massive and hopefully in the future we can make the time to come back and explore more. The path is clean and well maintained stretching for miles with beautiful views on both sides especially during the fall season when the colors make the entire trail look magical. It's a perfect place to clear your mind and enjoy some quiet time. The flat paved surface makes it easy for everyone whether you're an experienced biker or just out for a relaxing walk. I also liked how calm it was, not too crowded which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. The sunlight filtering through the trees and the sound of leaves underfoot make this trail feel special. I highly recommend visiting during early morning or late afternoon for the best light and the most peaceful atmosphere. It's clean and well maintained and wasn't too crowded on a weekday around noon. We parked at Pearre Road and there was plenty of parking. No restroom there, just a port o let so plan accordingly. We walked away from Hancock and there's an awesome overlook about a mile or two away that's a must see if you're in the area. Also impressive to see the rock "walls" they blasted through back in the day to create the railroad. Further down the road, the train combines with the C&O trail for a while, so that part is gravel/dirt rather than pavement so plan accordingly if it's been rainy. This is a must see if you're in the area and I'd come back and check this trail out again

Cunningham Falls State Park - Every table has a grill

A bit of a mixed bag for me at Cunningham Falls…read more.. I was excited to find a listing of parks that supposedly had wheelchair accessible trails. I've never been to Cunningham Falls before and the idea of seeing a waterfall seemed lovely. However, the accessible boardwalk has strips on pretty much everything board which made me feel like I was riding a very angry horse. Each bump shot pain up my spine. I'm writing this a day later and I still hurt, and I think I'm a pretty tough chick... and the view of the falls was mostly blocked and not worth the actual pain. The Falls is more like a small stream of water that splashes down some rocks. It's a soothing noise but I was expecting something more grandiose... I suppose I could blame climate change. Most of the old stream beds are dry. We also checked out the "south beach" which I enjoyed. There's plenty of pavement, and packed gravel. I couldn't get close to the water, but that's okay because it was a sunny day and I prefer to stick to the shade. I was impressed by the fact that every picnic table has a grill nearby. If I lived closer I'd like to think I'd come to the south beach often, hide in the trees near the river, grill something delicious... but I was a several hours long trip from Dundalk, so it's unlikely that I'll return. It was a nice day-trip though. I don't regret going.

It is a 205-foot-long (62 m), Town lattice truss bridge, constructed in 1849. It uses no arches or exterior supports and was considered strong enough to support a bridge up to 200 feet in length. It was less costly to build than traditional arch supported bridges. It crosses Conococheague Creek. In 1973 the bridge was rehabilitated after being carried downstream by flood waters during Hurricane Agnes. Steel bracing was added at a later date to stabilize the bridge. In spite of being altered over the years due to destruction and restoration it remains a good example of this type of covered bridge design and contains approximately two-thirds of its original timbers. The bridge is only open to pedestrian traffic and is located at the end of a curvy road down to the creek. There is a small area for parking nearby. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. [Review 15581 overall - 571 in Pennsylvania - 1085 of 2021.]
