I found Berkeley Bob's over a year ago after dealing with another mechanic who "repaired" my truck to pass smog. I found the staff their to be knowledgeable and professional. They detailed and prioritized all the repairs I could make on my truck. We talked over my options and came up with a solid plan that I could afford. They gave me good information, set reasonable expectations, and completed the work when they said they would. I have gone to them for everything from bushings and hoses to gaskets and sensors. My truck has over 250K and runs great. With annual maintenance at Bob's, I feel that I can count on my little truck for a long time (and many miles) to come. Worked with Sean and Collin. Great knowledgeable staff. Have an 82 245 Volvo which had a bad wiring harness. Sean took care of it plus "buttoning up" little things at no extra cost and then gave me a list of thigs to do, starting from what needed to be done sooner than later. Sean is also a member of the GGVCOA and well known in the Volvo community. I prefer to have a technicial who knows traditional mechanical work, but also has knowledge of tuning for performance. I work when they are open so they worked with me on drop off and pick up. They were done in the time they told me, and the cost was what they told me in the beginning. I took my wife's 08 Camry Hybrid in for an oil change a few months ago and had a great experience. I found out I needed a water pump but could not replace it at the time. These guys are so honest; they told me we could drive it under normal conditions for awhile and replace it later. I came back today for the water pump replacement and an oil change I experienced superior service once again. There was a bracket that needed replacing these guys took the bracket out and had a welder repair it better than new. Awesome group of guys. They also have a great waiting area with WIFI. I brought my car into Berkeley Bob's and they did a free inspection to let me know how my car was doing. They were very sweet and friendly! I appreciated their honesty and ability to explain things to me. I ended up changing one of my belts and it was very affordable. They also saved me hundreds of dollars when they told me my key fob was broken and that my key could break and would cost me a lot more money. They advised me to buy a new key fob on amazon and they would replace it for me for free when it arrived. Also when they quoted me a price over the phone it turned out to be cheaper when I went into pay. I highly recommend their services! read more

I recently took my 1995 Honda Civic to Berkeley Bob's for a CV boot. They were able to get my car in and out quickly for a great price. (I have had this car for almost ten years, and drive it as if it were a pick-up truck, so I have replaced more than my share of CV boots. I am unfortunately quite familiar with how much that fix usually costs me.) Tom, one of their mechanics, spent a good fifteen minutes explaining how CV boots and axles actually work, so for the first time I understand what is wrong with my car. As a young woman, I don't often find warm, honest mechanics that will take the time to explain things, rather than just assuming if they say it is broken, I will pay. The guys here are nice and patient with me considering I know nothing of the car world. They answered all my questions and explained things to me without getting that irritated look on their face or in their eye which is frequent at other places. They don't yank you around either, they give honest feedback/opinions. Thy also offer rides to Bart of needed after dropping off your car. Bob's is great. I was driving my Volvo cross country from New Jersey when our turn signals suddenly stopped working in California. We were only spending two days in the Bay Area and every other Volvo repair shop told us they didn't have time to look at our car. I was immediately put at ease when I called Bob's and they told me it would be no problem to give our car a look. They fixed it for an incredibly reasonable price and were great to work with. I have had mixed experiences with Bob's, and am now at the point where I hesitate to bring my car back to them. The front desk service is very friendly and polite, and their time management is great (the car is always ready on time). I have had some services there that have gone just fine. However, I brought my Volvo in 3 times because it was leaking coolant. The first time they said everything was fine (but charged me for their time, which is normal). The second time (after a dramatic episode of overheating) they replaced the thermostat and another part in the cooling system, but said the radiator was fine. When it was still leaking coolant shortly thereafter, I brought it back in and this time they said the radiator had a major leak and needed to be replaced... for $700. And they swore up and down that the problem had not been there the last 2 times they worked on the car, so they wouldn't credit any of the labor costs for the previous services. Meanwhile, the radiator place across the street charged $450 for the same service. You can guess where I took my car. read more
