I never thought I'd need to make it clear to a company that it's not okay to tell young children who have been riding around with no heat in 8-degree weather that they are "definitely" getting a car unless you can actually deliver. I was rushed to provide a down payment and start a new insurance policy that day because it was "a done deal." In fact, they were so confident the deal was done that they let me take the car to pick up my children so they could finally have heat - specifically telling me that since I "already had insurance on it," I might as well. What followed that handshake and congratulations was a two-day saga of moving goalposts. After three 80-minute round trips in inclement weather, the tone shifted to condescension regarding my company's financials - as if they were doing me a "favor" by selling me a car. This was after being lightheartedly told the evening prior, "as long as the pay deposits are on your bank statement, you're good." I get that this is partially the bank's doing - but if you don't know your lenders that well you certainly shouldn't be making promises where it concerns them. The lack of respect for a customer's time was staggering. I was pressured to provide more paperwork (including more proof of my VA disability - despite having my award letter) while they knew I had to transport my kids back and forth to school, and in fact also do parenting things - only to be told at the last second they were closing two hours earlier than the day prior. When I realized I wasn't going to meet their shifting deadline, I texted to let them know I was driving another 40 minutes to drop the car off to relieve the pressure and rethink the deal until the morning. When I arrived, instead of a professional return, the finance guy tried to move the goalposts yet again with more requirements. When I finally called it quits, the gaslighting began. I was transparent about a clerical error on a proof-of-income document generated by my own company - an error that did not change the actual income reported on my application or my ability to prove it through bank statements. Knowing how openly embarrassed I was about the mistake the day before, the finance guy loudly accused me of submitting a "fake" document to justify the deal falling apart. The logic doesn't hold up: Why is he letting a customer drive a car off the lot to pick up their children if he truly suspects a document is malicious or "fake?" By weaponizing a transparent mistake at the finish line, they were simply trying to shift the blame for a deal they couldn't close. When I walked away, they blamed me for their failure and refused to refund my down payment on the spot, insisting on "mailing a check and maybe getting it refunded to my card." On a separate note, my company deals in email security. As I do with any company I share PII and financial information with, I did a scan of their sending domain to find that it is critically unsecured. That, combined with the fact that they condone using personal Gmail accounts for professional correspondence and documentation sharing, raises serious security issues. I chose to overlook these for the promise of a good car-buying experience, but I feel others should be able to make that decision from the same position of knowledge. It seems like this is not the status quo at Berger. I can respect that this isn't peoples' normal experience, but it feels pretty uncalled for that it even happened once. I can also understand how if others have been a victim of this type of degradation, pride may prevent them from speaking of it publicly. It certainly isn't a comfortable experience for me. P.S. Instead of putting my down payment of the asking price, the put it on the finished interest price so I will pay more for interest. I asked that my loan be 60 months, they wrote it up for 72. When I went back to pick up my car, a sales man that I was not even dealing with started yelling at me and got mad and went and got the sales manager, who also got mad that I was upset. I have been meaning to update my review for quite some time. Quite a while after I purchased my vehicle, my husband went to Berger and spoke to the same salesman that sold me my car. He was considering purchasing a vehicle as well. I was not present for the conversation. My husband told the salesman not to run his credit yet as he was only shopping around. That day I had a hard hit on MY credit!! I disputed the inquiry and had my credit reports locked down! Berger maintained the claim to the credit reporting agencies that this was a legitimate inquiry after I called and complained to a manager. Please tell me how you can have a valid inquiry on a person's credit when they were not even PRESENT?! No paper was signed, no verbal permission given... NO ONE EVEN CALLED!! I woke up after pulling a third shift and woke up to a credit alert and not even a voicemail! This hit on my credit was not only fraudulent but the salesman had no way of even knowing whether or not my husband and I were still married! I am still upset about this as their fraudulent check STILL sits on my credit reports. I am angry that their salesman was allowed to pull my credit without my permission and it further causes me to fear in what other ways this man or this company has fraudulently used my private information and my identity. I filed a report with the credit report in agencies, I locked down my records, and I reported it to the proper leadership at this Berger location! Berger lied in their claim that this was a legitimate pull on my credit. So... they fraudulently pulled my credit then they lied about it. I do not trust Berger!! NO ONE SHOULD!! He was patient with our many questions and informative with his responses. We went on multiple test drives until we felt certain we had found just the right vehicle, his suggestions were very helpful to us arriving at our decision. Since we were using a credit union outside of their system it took additional time for us to complete our purchase, but Marcellous made sure that the vehicle was firmly held under our deposit and honored his promise to us. My elderly 80+ yr old father was in a car accident this morning. He had his vehicle towed to Berger to get an estimate on the damage, or if it was going to be totaled. Duane the sales man was going to sell my dad a brand new Chevy Z71 without even knowing if my fathers's truck was repairable. My father's vehicle is paid off and in mint condition. I think they were taking advantage of him and being irresponsible. They knew he came straight from a car accident. They also call him frequently to see if he is willing to trade in his truck. Why buy/trade in a new 2022 truck when you don't if know if it's repairable. Unethical!! read more

DO NOT USE THIS DEALERSHIP! There's a reason their average rating is so low. My experience is in detail below. I also briefly make note of my brother's experience. Considering these and the majority of other reviews on here, it's clear this dealership is overall horrible! ------------------- I went there back in November, when my spouse and I were considering a move to West Michigan from our previous home in the California Bay Area and discussing trading our car in for something that was AWD or 4x4. I was interested in the Traverse. I knew exactly which trim and options I wanted to see, and had already checked to make sure they had at least one on the lot. In other words, I checked online to make sure they had at least one in stock and stopped by after hours to make sure the models shown online were actually on the lot. They had several available in a few different colors, including the main color in which I was interested. When I walk into the showroom, a sales person comes up and asks how he can help. I explain I'm still shopping around, in the process of checking out a few different SUVs in person. He asks what I'm interested in, both from their brand and others. I list the four vehicles I'm most interested in, and his response is that I'm looking at too many cars with too wide a price range. Mind you, the price for these SUVs all ranged from around 40-45K and it was a total of four vehicles. His weird sales techniques were immediately annoying, but I didn't say anything... Next, he asks if I know in which Traverse trim I'm interested. I tell him, and he immediately says he doesn't think they have any of those on the lot. At this point, I do correct him. I explain that I've already checked and know that, as of the evening before, they had at least five on the lot with the specific option package in which I'm interested. He then asks what color I want, only to immediately tell me he doesn't think they have it in that color. I'm pretty annoyed at this point, but keep my cool. I'm just wondering what kind of BS sales tactics these people are using... I again tell him that I know they have at least one on the lot unless they just sold it in the couple hours they've been open that day. Also, I remind him that I just said I'm flexible on the color. He says he'll check for it... He comes back and tells me they do have it. He now wants me to fill out some paperwork, asking what my income is and telling me they will now run my credit. I remind him that I'm not at that point in my search and want to simply see the vehicle and test drive it in order to compare it to the others I'm looking at. If I decide to purchase it, I'll be paying cash anyway, so he doesn't need to concern himself with my personal finances. He again makes a comment about the difference in price between the vehicles I'm considering. Now, annoyed to the point where I'm no longer biting my tongue, I ask him if there's a problem. I note that I do my research before coming into the dealership and don't appreciate being jerked around. Also, I explain that outdated sales tactics, like making it seem a car is harder to find than it actually is or trying to make a customer feel like they don't really know much about shopping for a car, don't work with me. I tell him that if he's not comfortable bringing me the car, then he can go get a supervisor for me to speak with. At this point, he apologizes and says there's no problem and that he'll go get the car. It seemed like a classic "stand up to the bully" kind of situation. There's no way I would ever buy a car from this place. A few days later, someone called asking if I was still interested in buying a car from them. I explained that after the experience I had with that sales person, I would not be returning. ------------------- Last week, my brother and his wife went to the same dealership to look at an SUV. Afterward, without yet knowing that I had been there in the past, they told me about a similar experience. Their salesperson wanted them to fill out paperwork to finance the car before they ever even got to look at a car. He asked them about their income, which is more than double the median income and more than four times the average income of the area, credit score, which is in the range considered "very good to exceptional," and down payment amount, which was around $10,000, equal to about 25% the cost of the car, only to then tell them that he doesn't know if they'll be able to afford the car in which they're interested... I know my brother's financial situation, and he and his wife are looking for a car that is well under the max they can afford. Again, these people are clearly employing ridiculously outdated sales tactics. They left without even looking at the car in which they were interested. Instead, they went to another dealership that treated them respectfully and went through the process with transparency. ------------------- In summary: AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! read more

Engine is the same since the accident as if only cosmetic repairs got done. Made it to work on city streets, but later (while shop was closed), when I hit 50mph on the highway, the check engine light was blinking! Immediately ditched the car for fear of further damage & got an Uber! I'm furious it was unexpectedly returned a week early- my car isn't drivable and I'm now stranded! State Farm said a rental (was part of my claim) must be charged out of pocket as my claim is now closed. I received this by mail to schedule my pre-return inspection to take place at their dealership as clearly stated in this letter. So I proceeded to call the number given to me in this letter to do so, from there I got transferred to five people that all tried to get me into a new vehicle and when I told them I was not interested they proceed to tell me that they didn't know how to schedule that for me. I ended up with a sales person from there which I'm not going to mention any names and he told me that they do no such thing as a pre-return inspection.... and even if I were to bring in this letter that I received there is nothing he will do about it. I post this on April 1st, but its not a prank. I purchased my car on Christmas Eve. I picked it up on the 26th or 27th. Before I could get it in the driveway, the check engine light came on. I made contact with the salesman and eventually, their solution was simply clearing the code saying it was the cold weather. Fast forward a few days and it was back on. I have now made numerous attempts to get whatever the issue is addressed and fixed for 4 MONTHS and all I get is "Let me call you" and that call never comes. And the check engine light is still on. Come on, it came on before I was able to drive 9 miles from the dealership to my own driveway. I guess once they have your money, its move on to the next. I called their service department today and spoke to a Sadie and began to explain the defroster/defogger issue that I am having with my Chevy Malibu 2014. I have done some research and came across a GM recall for a software glitch that can cause the window defrosters to not work. Sadie did not find a recall under my VIN # and confirmed there's nothing they can do, I can bring my car in but I will be fully responsible. Also she mentioned she has never heard of this recall. I asked if I could speak to a manager and she said I could but there's nothing they can do either. I was transferred to a Lindsey (Steve's boss she said) who pulled up all my info and found no recall for this VIN and stated there's nothing they can do. I shared an experience I had with Hyundai dealership with a VIN # that didn't have a recall but after they completed diagnosis on that vehicle they realized it was related to the recall and repaired issue at no charge. After sharing that experience Lindsey then stated I could bring in my Malibu to have it diagnosed and so forth. Why didn't she say this in the first place? Why did I have to keep asking Lindsey if there's anything else they can do? They are absolutely no help or have sympathy for Chevy consumers. I have decided to call GM directly. They guys are the worst dealership in Grand Rapids, and possibly Michigan. I purchased a new 2018 Colorado ZR2, it's been in and out of there serviced department for over 34 days, and each time they make things worst. The last warranty service they replaced the rear leaf springs on both sides, they scratch the rust coating of several areas and had to remove the gas tank for the install, easy right? except they didn't put the gas that was in the tank back!! So I had to asked them to put gas in the tank and they acted like I was nuts for it. The headliner in the cab has grease on from there service tech, and they are giving me attitude from asking them to clean it!! So I would say if you have low expectations of what good service is use Berger, if you have higher standards take your business so where else. read more

I was looking to buy a new car and after visiting a few dealerships I went back to Berger where I had purchased my used Saturn back in 2011. The process was surprisingly less stressful than I anticipated. After getting pre qualified online I was paired up with Jorge Garcia as my sales person. I was able to do all my contact through email as it's much easier for me with my schedule. I arrived at the dealership after work, Jorge had the two cars, in the color and with the features I wanted, waiting for me to test drive when I got there. Jorge was very knowledgeable and definitely not pushy. I have been in customer service for over 20 years and I was pleasantly surprised with my experience with Jorge. Before and during the test drive Jorge showed me all the features I had available to me in both cars. While I was waiting for the paperwork to be completed he took me on a golf cart ride around the facility to show me the places like where they prep the cars, the quick lube area and the service department. We even looked at the two race corvettes they have. When I picked the car I wanted to purchase it came time for the paperwork. That's when I got my next surprise. Cathy Hubbard in finance made this part of the experience much easier than I was expecting. She patiently went through everything that I had to know and sign. She was so easy to work with. She also was very knowledgeable and made the final part of the experience as painless as it can be when making a major purchase. The charges included bogus hazardous waste disposal fees, for parts we supplied and more. To top it off they left trash in the truck bed (a box with their name and address on it). My 2014 Ford Focus was giving me a bunch of problems so I decided to trade it in with Berger and guess what? They sold me a 2015 Equinox with more problems!!! My oil and my gas runs out really fast so now I'm working with one of their service technicians to fix the oil. I will have to pay an additional $139 to see why my gas is running out fast. Also all of my tire sensors are dead so I have to get new ones! They are full of SHIT!! I've only had the car since August and I am so stressed and devastated. Gas is $4.30 and I have to keep putting gas in my tank because these crooks sold me a messed up truck. I can't stop crying because I don't have the money to fix all of these problems and they don't care!! I put a deposit on a new silverado LT trail boss. I waited many days for it to come into the dealership. After gm dropped it off to the this terrible organization, I finished the financing, insured it, and had them put my plate on it. It was titled, registered, and insured by me. When I went to pick it up 2 days later it was not clean at all. It had not been cleaned for customer delivery. A salesperson apologized and took it to the back to get cleaned. I also pointed out a scuff in the paint above the gas door lid. 2 hours later a "manager" drove it out and told me they had an "incident". They smashed it!! I never even sat in it. They said they would fix it. $5700 damage. The general manager told me to take or leave it and blamed it on me. Mike Ohlman is a pompous ass. I left him a voicemail asking him to call me so we could work out this bad situation his people caused. After 2 days went by I called again. He intentionally blew me off. He told me that I threw his people "under the bus" and he was going to play hardball. Berger Chevrolet is run by a jerk. He has no class or tact. I was not treated like a customer. We have been here a few times and had awful service each time. Initially, we came for a repair on my SUV. I felt their response time and breakdown of their pricing wasn't transparent. We gave it another shot when my husband was shopping for an SUV. The sales agent STRESSED how we had to have a good credit score & down payment that we did not hear her stress to the couple she was with prior and the only difference was our color. And to be clear, we don't have an issue in either area. Needed service yet again with my headlights going out. Paid over $200 for them to just change the bulbs when over the phone she told us that it was more than just the bulbs when the receipt was for bulbs and labor. I feel this place lacks integrity or morals. Even when I went to retrieve my car, the man left it on the other side from where I was standing and just left it running with the door open, he did not say a word. My family has been using Berger for years now and never had a bad experience. It is where I bought my first real car back in 1991, and I have also brought 3 of my 4 children here to purchase their first cars. Within the past few years we have worked with Martin who is amazing! He does what it takes to have us driving off the lot a happy customer, typically the same day. Two of my sons have gone back and traded their cars in for newer ones with absolutely no issue and have been highly satisfied. They don't try to pressure you into anytging and one tip we found over the years...if you go towards the end of the month, you will get a better deal so they can make their monthly goals! read more
