DON'T EAT HERE! 3 weeks ago my husband, another couple and I went to eat. As we were leaving my husband began to feel sick. We made it home in time for him to go to the bathroom. He had eggplant parm and we have eaten there plenty of times before with no problems. He had stomach problems for a few days after. So on Tuesday night we went back to eat and i got the veal piccata. It was very good as usual. My husband got the eggplant parm again. And again he was feeling sick. I took home the rest of my food and later shared it with my daughter. We were almost finished with the food and then we seen it A MAGGOT!!! A disgusting maggot was in my dish. Immediately we both felt sick to our stomachs. We did notify the restaurant and wanted to speak to the owner but he was not in and was supposed to call us back and of course he never did. This is a special gem. There are many, many choices for Italian restaurants in our area that are mediocre or Italian fast food. Everything that is made is different and made from scratch. You taste the roasted garlic in the escarole and bean soup..just like Nana made! The quality of the ingredients is too a level above. If interested, just try a slice of one of their pizzas...you won't be disappointed. Secondly, they care about the customers they serve and their kindness shined during Covid as it does with each order. My local fav with astonishing variety, almost every pie extremely well made. Soups are freshly-made, extremely well-priced, and easily the best tasting in the area. In any area. There's a huge variety of pies here. I'd be inclined to worry that there are too many, yet every one is spectacular and uniquely it's own. Brick oven pizzas come in all the usual types. Plain, sausage, pepperoni of course, margherita, BBQ, shrimp, bacon, whatnot.... Veggie, too, and even that whatsit thing with pineapples.... There are pies called "specials" plus Sicilian and gluten free and even something with a cauliflower crust that I've never been inclined to try. There's the square thin crust Grandma's pizza, a California pizza, a Godfather pizza and the exceptional "Friday in Vatican" all veggie, meatless pizza. Every time I've gone in to pick up a pie or three, there are shelves laden with gleaming prebaked slices, each looking unique and impossible to refuse. (And you're well-advised to be adventurous - these really are spectacular slices and squares, as good as they look.) And then there's the eat-in food here, too, sometimes even better than these best-in-class pies. In the back, on the side, a pleasant dining room serves Incredible parmigiana, perfectly prepared pastas, those great soups and stunningly good sauces, always enough for an opulently overfed dinner plus a hearty lunch or two the next day. It's amazing how such a simple, unassuming, way off on a back road kind of place can consistently turn out such world-class foods. And yet they do, and have every time I've been there. Sad to say Benvenuto appears to be going downhill. Perhaps it is because they opened a 2nd location and the owner is not at this location as often. We typically order on Sundays and the last two times my salad had spoiled vegetables in it. Also, a wedge was undercooked with the cheese not even being melted. At first I thought it was a fluke however it appears to be the new norm. I will look for a new takeout place in the area. read more

I was visiting Carmel from NYC and on my way back looked up this place for lunch. I walked in to a huge variety of pizzas available by the slice. The calamari pizza was sooooo great and both slices were warm, crusty and perfect - will be my go to if I happen to be in this neighborhood again. But it's always crowded with teenage kids and honestly, the food is very salty. We were a party of six (6) who had dinner at this restaurant this past Saturday. We have been there many times before and the owner, knows all of us. When I presented the yelp coupon for one free dessert, the owner had a temper tantrum and kept yelling that he didn't agree to the free dessert. His voice got so loud, that everyone in the restaurant was looking at me. He finally screamed at me and said that I was a " pain in the a...". At that point, my husband and I got up, paid our bill upfront, and left.
