Philip's Design - Custom cut-to-length Curtain Rods and drapes close to ceiling. Customer wanted them just barely touching the floor.

Responded very quickly and offered to come the same day, on a Saturday, no less, so we appreciated…read morethat. We needed curtains hung. I had started the job myself but got an anchor screw stuck and figured I should have a pro step in so I didn't wreck my new walls. All the supplies were here, placed where they needed to be, holes were measured and marked for custom made rods and drapes. He charges by the hour and moves very, very slow. He didn't have his own step ladder or anchor screws. In the first hour, he managed to put in 3 screws in holes that had already been marked. He claimed he "needed to remeasure" and that's why it took so long, but he used the holes that I had already marked. He also said it was too hard to do with custom cut rods. He also said it wasn't his fault because I had an anchor screw stuck in the wall already, which was the whole reason I hired him. This is what pros do: they come prepared, know the required materials and techniques, and advise the customer on the best way to proceed. I knew we needed to cut it off when he asked me how to use an anchor screw. He didn't know if you needed to pre-drill or not for a very basic and common anchor. I cannot imagine a professional handyman not knowing that. He used a level to stare at the pre-marked holes for what seemed like an eternity, just eating up time. 3 screws = $200. Seems like a nice enough man, but handyman may not be the profession for him, and that's giving him the benefit of the doubt that he wasn't just trying to take advantage of someone he assumed was too naive too know how long the job should take. He became very defensive, making excuses when I said we'd need to end the job at one hour. Im sure judging by other less than 5 star reviews here (that I really wish I'd have taken the time to read) he will post a very defensive response here as well. Please just don't take a job you don't have the required expertise to complete, and I don't want to hear defensive excuses when I'm still out $200 for almost no work completed.

Bob 4 Hire - Top of Door

Bob came out and gave me an estimate on two tasks that I wanted done. The first was to repair…read morerotted wood near our porch door and the second was to fix a sliding glass door which was hard to open and shut. I was told that the job would be done in one day or less. Bob's son, Rob, came to do the job and he started on the first task. By the end of the day, Rob seemed to be in a big hurry to finish the caulking. He told me that the second task would have to be done on another day and he left. When I inspected his work the rotted wood was nicely replaced, but his caulking around the door was extremely unprofessional. I wish that I could post my photos of his work. On another day, I called to mention the poor caulking job and was told that Rob would have a look at it when he came back to complete the second task. I was asked to pay for the first task which was equal to the estimate for both the tasks ("it was only an estimate"). Then I waited. After several days, I called and Bob answered the phone. He was very nice and assured me that the second task would be completed as soon as the ordered parts came in. He promised to let me know when they arrived. That was seven months ago and Bob has yet to call. At this point, I am looking for a handyman who knows how to remove sloppy caulking that is well dried and who can fix a hard to slide glass door. Some handymen are not so handy.
