Bavel - Baked Alaska

Bavel had been hyped up to me not only by the population of Los Angeles, but also by my two foodie…read morefriends who said this was their favorite restaurant. I heard Bavel is the sister restaurant to Bestia, so I didn't know what to expect because I thought Bestia was overhyped in the sense that it's good but not "THE best restaurant in LA". I can see why so many people love this restaurant. It is not only creatively distinct from the commonly available Italian, Japanese, or Korea restaurants, it also does a great job at the food. Often times I find myself craving something new, something different, something delicious, and Bavel delivered on those fronts. For the dress code - this is LA. And this place is where people like to have fun, go out, socialize, eat good food. As in, people are coming dressed up here. That being said, certain dishes definitely stood out from the crowd, while others were a bit of a let down. Quail - 9/10 absolutely amazing. I've had quail cooked Vietnamese style and quail cooked french style. Bavel's style of quail had tons of spices that create a nice new flavor I've never had with quail before. Hummus Masabacha - 8/10 - I normally don't like hummus, and I enjoyed this hummus. Hummus Duck Nduja - 8/10 Malawach - 6/10 - The crispy bread is what you expect of crispy bread. The creme fraiche and strawberry zhoug just did not pair well with the egg together with the malawach. I've never had a dish like this before so I don't know how it's supposed to be. Oyster Mushroom Kebab 7/10 - it's okay. We were told it would taste like a steak, which I agree it did have the same season as a steak. It was still oyster mushroom. It was good but not outstanding. Baked Alaska 8/10 - I normally don't like to order ice cream for dessert, but this baked alaska was delicious and a creative twist on the baked alaska. I enjoyed every bite. I'd love to go back to try other dishes. I would get the quail again and skip the other dishes so I can new dishes. I would recommend the baked alaska for those who have not had it before.

Finally made the reservation to the LA restaurant that has been recommended everywhere on my social…read moremedia. Reservation was pretty easy to make. We went on a Sunday at 5.15pm and was seated by the chef counter area. It was only 2 of us so I wanted to make sure we ordered enough food but not too too much. Reading through the reviews, I ended up ordering the hummus duck nduja, oyster mushroom kebab, grilled prawn, and the lamb neck shawarma. First of all this restaurant seems more on the fancier side, but I appreciate that the vibe is still pretty casual and not pretentious. Even when serving the dishes, the server told us that some dishes are recommended to be enjoyed by hands. I really enjoyed the service. They served the plates in a pretty good pace, so I had plenty of time to enjoy each of them. First was the hummus duck nduja that was served with 2 bread that were freshly made. The bread was so fluffy and it went really well with the hummus. Very good appetizer. Second was the mushroom kebab. This might be my favorite plate of all. It really tasted like something else other than mushroom. It's that good. It has nice texture and flavor. Third was the grilled prawn and this one was recommended to be enjoyed by hands. It can be quite messy, but oh man it's so flavorful. I kinda wish it came with rice haha cos it's pretty rich. Very yummy. The cucumber salad that came with it was refreshing as well. The last but not least was the lamb neck shawarma. It's so so good and falls off the bone. My bf said this was his favorite. It came with bread, although again I kinda wish it came with rice! Haha but that's just cos I'm more of a rice girly. I was already full so we take it to go. Everything was so delicious and service was great. Definitely will come back again to try other dishes. Parking was difficult so we ended up using vallet for $15. Edit to add: we just enjoyed the leftover lamb the night after, and OMG it's soooooo good! I didn't do justice on my review at the restaurant cos I was already full by the time they served the lamb. Will definitely be dreaming of that lamb now..

Hands down, the BEST Persian restaurant!!…read more Everything about this place is absolutely AMAZING!!! The food is top tier, incredibly fresh, flavorful, and seriously mouthwatering! Every bite is perfection! The service is outstanding, and even when the restaurant is packed, the food comes out at a great pace! The atmosphere, the vibes, the energy, everything is just beyond!!! And let's talk about the TAHDIG! Hands down the BEST tahdig you will ever have!!! Crispy, delicious, and absolutely unforgettable! From the food to the service to the overall experience, this place checks every single box! Can't recommend it enough, and I already can't wait to come back!

The place is quite large with a lot of tables but half of it is under a tarp and so if it is hot or rainy it's not as comfortable There is also a very tiny parking lot. Its valet but they can't fit all the cars and street parking in the area can be bit tricky. I would stick w the Kabob selection (I'm partial to the juicy flavorful bone in chicken) unless you enjoy your stews on the sour side. All that being said, their food is delicious and the staff is friendly, which is why I keep going back.

We just got home from dinner here and my wife and I loved it. The food was absolutely top notch. We…read morestarted with the potatoes in garlic sauce and an order of the haroumi and watermelon. What a great kick off! As for our mains, we both ordered a variation of the combo plates. I had the chicken tawook and beef. The Mrs. had the chicken and lamb. All good. Based on the food alone, we would recommend this place to anyone with a beating heart and more importantly, a mouth. This is quality food at a quality price. The atmosphere? Really great. It's a little dark and twinkly inside which sets a nice tone. There is cool artwork adorning every piece of wall, the place is very easy on the eyes...including the restrooms. Very clean. Our sever, didn't catch his name, but what a nice dude. Was super helpful without being "too much" he should teach a server class. He's pretty much who you want taking care of your table. He knew the menu well and made great suggestions. It was actually refreshing. We will come back, most likely with the family. Our waiter told us that they can accommodate larger groups which is great. I recently ate food at Saffy's and I didn't enjoy it one bit. The servings there are too small, too pretentious and too overpriced. Open Sesame is the exact opposite and that's why it rules. A wonderful experience in Beverly Boulevard.

Parking can be a little tough since they don't have their own parking. I was able to find a spot two blocks away so it wasn't too bad. Got their kefta plate which comes with salad, ground lamb and beef, roasted chillis, and tahina as my main. Everything was great, chillis had a good juicy kick. You get to choose a side and a sauce, I went with their garlic sauce which was a bit heavy for my liking. Their sides were amazing. We ordered their oyster mushrooms which were juicy and flavorful. Love the sauce that came under the mushrooms. Their crispy broccoli was also really good. We had some leftovers and air frying these was such a great move. Would recommend mizlala to anyone and everyone!

The patio is a cute little oasis in west Adams (but certainly toasty during a heat wave so keep that in mind). The salmon plate is my go-to and it's so much food - great value for the price. I love that you get the option to choose your sauce and a pickle and the charred lemon is a small but great addition. I've had better pita elsewhere, but theirs does the trick for dipping in their fresh dips and I've never left here unsatisfied. Some mention parking is hard but I've never had too much trouble after searching for a couple minutes on the side streets. Will absolutely keep this place is my rotation for weekend lunches.
