Since 1953 the Benning family name has been synonymous with the old-world craft of making fine, master-crafted instruments, when by a marriage (some may call destiny), the family took over Studio City Music in Los Angles. This is a very tardy review from 2020 of a visit with a friend that was looking for a bow replacement. I was a former musician myself and played trumpet. Although strings was not my thing I appreciate all types of instruments. Studio City Music was the vision of Paul Toenniges, born in De Kalb, Illinois in 1908. Paul began his studies of instrument making under the promptings of Carl Becker Sr., his brother-in-law. He worked alongside some of the greatest names in American violinmakers and restorers while in Chicago from 1926 to 1940. He moved to Los Angeles in 1945, where he worked at the Rudolf Wurlitzer branch from 1946 to 1950. Finally, in 1950, Paul opened his own shop, which he named Studio City Music. Paul ran a simple family-owned shop along with his wife, Ruth, and two daughters. Daughter Nancy showed a remarkable talent in restoration at an early age and it was decided that she would attend the Violinmaking School in Mittenwald, Germany to further her education. While in Mittenwald, Nancy met her love, Hans Benning, also a student in the violinmaking school. Together they returned to Studio City Music to continue the legacy of her family's business. Eventually, in 1978, Hans and Nancy Benning took over Studio City Music when her father retired. The longevity of Studio City Music seems very much intact now that Hans' and Nancy's son, Eric Benning, has come to work for them- after studying himself many years. The luthier legacy will continue for the third generation. With Eric's teen son now learning the family trade, it seems very possible this store will last yet another chapter of the family legacy in wood. A visit with a friends son to their show room to try over 30 bow possibilities they laid out. He will be entering college in the fall and studying music. The price can be staggering for a high quality bow. Then finally...nailing down "the one". A bow that was lovingly carved in Germany and created in the1960's. I believe the bow was placed on hold. I'm not sure if it was ever purchased. The price was over $3,500. A trip to Benning Violin is much like a trip to the candy store for a violinist. I can honestly say they don't have specialty music stores such as this to compare. The owner Hans now 79 continues to be on sight most everyday.

Parking lot has a violin shaped bush and a bow garden.

Such a sweet family business. The staff is so kind and extremely knowledgeable. They treat everyone with kindness and respect. My daughter loves it there. Parking is great as well:)

    Cello bridge from Benning Violins

Since I'm a beginner, I have a super low cost cello my partner bought for me from the internet. Needless to say, it needed some upgrades. The folks at Benning Violins were extremely helpful when it came to the upgrades. They made me a new bridge, fixed my fingerboard, and put on a couple new strings. When I got my cello back, it sounded warmer but things weren't quite perfect (I.e. my delicate beginner fingers couldn't handle the slightly taller bridge!). The Bennings helped perfect the instrument for me and now it sounds and feels great! I'm so happy with the work they did on my cello. If I need any future adjustments, I will definitely bring it back to them.

I walked into Benning Violin at the suggestion of Wolfgang T, our instructor. I needed to buy a shoulder rest, and although mine was a small and financially insignificant purchase, I felt that I was treated as though I bought an expensive violin. The wonderful woman who helped me took great care fitting and adjusting the shoulder rest to the violin and made suggestions on how to personalize the fit even further. I also loved that they were open early in the morning to I could get this errand done before my commute. This is a gem of a store.

Just went there this morning. This store is sooooo adorable!! The lady helping me was super friendly. If you like the mini violin cutout in the front, ask to see the cello cut out in the back!! It even lights up~

Thanks to the Benning crew for getting me set up and on my way!

I stopped by on the way home to explore modular synths for the first time, hoping I'd get that "feeling" like this is a perfect fit for me. Thanks to seeing Big City Music here on Yelp, I drove to their address but had trouble finding the building because there were no signs anywhere. From Ventura, it looked like there was an abandoned building at the address listed. So, I called and talked to Roger. He was great to talk to and said they usually ask customers to make an appointment to stop by. Lucky for me they were available at that time and I could stop in. He gave me better directions, since the entrance was actually off Ventura Blvd. Big City Music is unlike any other music store I've been to. It feels like I'm entering a "secret club" where you go enter through back door and walk into a room-sized warehouse full of boxes and supplies everywhere. Roger was glad to see me and introduced himself right away. He then pointed me to the demo room, where there are several large modular synths, some (very nice) keyboards, guitar pedals, vintage gear and a couple people (Stephi and Morgan) ready to help out. I mentioned I was new to modular synths and wanted to mess around a bit to get a feel for what they can do. Stephi cleared off a module and handed me some patch cables to mess around as much as I wanted. I never felt rushed the entire time I was there. At first, I was clueless. Just clueless. I started having doubts immediately. What the F was I doing here? Rather than allowing them to hear my embarrassingly-awful sounds I'd be making, I popped on some headphones and patched on the fly. After a half-hour, I felt comfortable enough to ask Morgan a few questions about the basics. He jumped right in on their massive modular and started patching like a mad scientist, showing me what all the modules can do. I was very impressed with his knowledge and passion. I instantly felt at ease, even though I had very little knowledge of what was going on. The way he explained things were super helpful. Since my first visit, I decided to take the dive into modular and have returned. I bought a Monorocket case, some patch cables and a few modules to get me started. I'll definitely be coming back here to fill up my case over the coming months and ask for a couple more tutorials. I'm very lucky to live so close to this great store and to learn from awesome people. Cheers--

For starters, the windows and posters have seen their days that one might think that it is out of business, but it is in fact not and quite the opposite - tons of space inside! They have a variety of instruments and supplies, including a cleaning swab which I was looking for. And the plus is that they also offer music lessons in private rooms - even same day! I had an initial same-day oboe lesson with Phil, and we had great conversation. However, I have to admit that I didn't learn too much, and that we spent most of the time talking. The person working at the front was pretty chill, but paying for lessons wasn't very clear from the beginning - recommend being more specific with those. Their website is via Tumblr (?) which is a surprise. Lessons were $40 / session, and they recommend one session per week (but how long is a session?). Overall, I wish that there was more clarity on this side from time to payment the moment that we signed up. Parking was fairly easy to find on the street or in the lot in the back. However, do note that parking on the street is via metered parking and not free most hours. Return? Potentially for some music books!

The kids did an amazing job on both songs, and the parents got to see what they had been learning all week. Bonus: after they complete the summer camp, they're eligible to enroll in Rock 101 to deepen their knowledge of their chosen instrument or learn another. I cannot say enough good about this place.
