Disclaimer: I have never met an optometrist I didn't like. (I could name all of the dentists and general practitioners that I didn't like--that would be easy.) I went to Bennett Valley Optometry for an eye check-up and to order a new pair of glasses, and chose it because it offered the Optoscan (sp?) service, which is basically a machine that takes a scan of your entire eye at different depths using different colors. The front desk staff were friendly and warm, and Dr. Bowman was a very mellow, kind, and intelligent doctor who answered all of my questions thoroughly. I never felt rushed or dismissed, and he even used a very awesome eyeball model to explain to me what astigmatism was. He also showed me some very cool software that he used to analyze the optoscan images of my eyes and even told me where I could download the software so that I could try it out myself! (By the way, if you go with the Optoscan service, they send you wallpaper-sized images of your eye to your email.) He was also frank and candid about the advantages and disadvantages of laser eye surgery, since I was wondering whether it might work for me. For selecting glasses, I worked with Janine, who was very friendly and worked within the budget I gave her. She listened to my feedback, and based off of what I liked (thick wide frames) she found a selection of frames matching exactly just that. So, I had a hard time deciding. She brought out an iPad and took head on photos of me in different pairs of glasses for comparison. She then pulled up a library with different colors and styles for the frames I liked. In the end, I found exactly the type of frames I wanted. In terms of the length of time it took to receive the glasses (I ordered two pairs--one regular prescription, and the other prescription sunglasses with polarized lenses), it did take about two weeks (10 working days), so I would keep that in mind if you are in a rush and need glasses asap. Parking-wise, it's an open lot with plenty of spaces. Waiting room is quiet with plenty of neatly-organized magazines to appeal to any reader. In the actual eye examination room, they have Far Side comics...not that the wait was ever long enough for me to get very far into them. read more

I have been going to Bennett Valley Optometry for almost 25 years. I moved to Sacramento 20 years ago and had tried a couple of local eye doctors for convenience sake, but never found anyone who came close to how great Dr. Bowman and Dr. Owyang are. So, for the past 15+ years I have traveled the 4 hour round trips for my appointments and they are well worth the drive. I had gotten the frames from my previous optometrist in a different city, but my prescriptions never felt quite right. BV Optometry has a friendly front desk staff. They went out of their way to get me the closest appointment. The waiting space has all kinds of good magazines that I am too snobby to subscribe to but want to read like People. Too bad my wait was so short. The doctor is smart (a UC Berkeley alum) and friendly. He really took lots of time on my evaluation to make sure he got it right and that I didn't feel rushed or pressured. The OptiScan machine lets them evaluate your eye without dilation--nice. I will never go back to Costco, JC Penny's, or Sears optometry; each has provided either lousy service or a lousy product. read more

Have been going to BV Optometry for years. An amazingly helpful staff with quick turn around every time I need new glasses. I had an issue once with bifocals that I was trying out and could never get used to them. They had the lens changed 3x for me then I went back to my original prescription. These guys are fantastic. Everyone is friendly and welcoming and Dr. Harter is amazing. I had lost my glasses and expected a long period of "is this more blurry or this" but he used a method of looking at my eye to see how it focuses to narrow it down. It took very little time to find out exactly what I needed. He also explained everything he was doing and and a lot about the eye and vision I didn't know! I highly recommend paying extra to get the computerized test instead of eyedrops. Janine was wonderful and helped me pick out frames and type of progressive lenses and explained how different production methods improve them. They also offered a discount for my sunglasses. I was using my own frames for those so the half off price was great. read more

I have been going to see Dr. Owyang for years and would highly recommend her to anyone! She is amazing! She is so sweet and truly listens to your questions or concerns. She makes me laugh and even when I haven't seen her for a year she remembers something I told her from my previous check up! I always feel that she truly loves her job and cares about my eyesight! Took my daughter in for a routine checkup and we saw Dr. Bowman. He was nice and informative. I would rate his service 4 out of 5 stars. He diagnosed my daughter with astigmatism. My daughter picked out her glasses and we were told 7-10 working days for her glasses would be in. 30-working days later, we are still waiting for them. I called several times but got the same answer, the lab is working on them. I called in one morning again, & I was told that they would where also not happy with the lab and would be calling them. I did not hear from them, so I went in the office around 3pm. I was told that her glasses would be in the next day, but she did not bother to call me because she had gone to lunch. I guess lunch is more important then their patients. Well, we are still waiting for her glasses.. I really liked Dr. Bowman, but his staff & customer service is a 0-star. They have not offered any alternatives. It's too bad. I recommend trying elsewhere if you are looking for an optometrist. read more

Recently moved to the area, and needed to find a new optometrist. I have been seeing the same optometrist (who I loved) for years, and was a little nervous to go to someone new. All of the staff here was extremely helpful and friendly. Dr Owyang was very patient, careful, and explained everything she did and why, which was very helpful. I ended up here after the optometrist office I had tried for my eye exam did not have any glasses that I wanted. Staff was very nice and good about providing information and did not gasp and shudder when I asked about using my old frames that I really liked. I looked in at least six or seven other places including a couple of chains before I found this office, and they had the best selection of frames for my tastes and most reasonable prices here. My glasses were ready at the beginning of the time frame they had given me, and this is the first time that putting on a new pair of progressive lenses has been really positive. read more

They have an extreme level of professionalism and stay updated on the latest news and technologies relevant to their practice. The doctors genuinely care for each and every patient they see, putting forth their best efforts to make sure they receive the best care possible. The office is always clean, the staff is professional, and the doctors never make you feel rushed and are sure to thoroughly answer any and all of your questions. They offer a device called the Optomap which replaces the need to get dilated. It is an additional fee and is worth every penny! They are able to reference previous scans to see how your eyes progress over the years and you are left feeling more comfortable without the need for dilation.
