I spent the weekend in the Inn in October and I cannot say enough good things about it. The room I stayed in "Carriage Room" was wonderful. Spacious bathroom and bedroom and also had a deck. Beautifully decorated and extremely clean! Shelly and Drew could not have been nicer. The free breakfast is great and they are so accommodating. We sat at the fire pit at night and enjoyed an evening with other guests whom we did not know. I will not stay anywhere else when I am in Cortland. Love this place! The gentleman are just the sweetest, that run Benn Conger Inn. It was last minute calling for a reservation, as the hotel I had booked near by had mold in the room I was to stay in, which was a huge " no way," as I suffer from 6 autoimmune diseases. ( BENN CONGER) They literally had the room ready, AC going, and so welcoming in 20 minutes. I had two children with me, and they accommodated our special diets of needing to be gluten free for breakfast, and having to leave early in the AM. I slept so good, and I can't say enough of how grateful I am to them for accomidating last minute. read more

We stayed at this inn during Columbus Day weekend and had a really pleasurable visit. We made our choice after trolling the web and B&B sites, relying most heavily on TripAdvisor reviews. It's interesting to read reviews of a place AFTER you've stayed there to compare for yourself - I'm not sure we would have chosen the inn if we'd looked on Yelp based on just the two reviews here. I'm glad we didn't check, because we would have missed a great option for us. So we decided to post one ourselves, in case it helps you. So, the stats: ROOM: We stayed in the Victorian building, not the main Inn, and had the Peach room. The room was spacious, very clean, and had B&B coziness but wasn't overly fussy or feminine (In spite of the peachy name, which had worried us a little). It has an amazingly large and well-positioned private balcony. Though it rained most of the weekend and was chilly, we couldn't resist sitting out there at times. There's also a large jacuzzi tub/shower and a gas fireplace, which was a really nice feature and provided all the heating we needed despite the raw days. We didn't have to turn on the wall heating so I don't know if that's noisy or not, a complaint we often have with chain motels. There is a TV in the room, which we appreciated, but an older model, not flat screen. Can be hidden behind cupboard doors for B&B purists. There's some bleed-through of sound through the walls, though we felt pretty private most of the time. Check about whether there is wifi in the room -- a guy using the small shared lounge in the building said he was able to get on, but our iPad was on the fritz so we couldn't check it ourselves. King-sized bed was very comfortable; also very high to climb into so if you have trouble with hopping up, maybe ask for another room. Good number of pillows and excellent quantity and quality of towels. Hairdryer was provided, soap and shampoo. Possible downside, though not for our vacationing purposes: no desk in the room. We glimpsed a credenza in one of the other rooms, so ask for room recommendations if you need that. FOOD: We see that a year ago they may not have offered sit-down service for breakfast but that appears to have changed, or vary with the dish. The breakfast room is unusually spacious for a B&B because it's also a restaurant. Two mornings we were served right at the table (pancakes with a homemade red-fruit syrup, sausage & yogurt; excellent eggs benedict with cantaloup). Another morning, it was set up more buffet-style but the host was there to fill our plates for us (homemade bacon-spinach quiche, with a second meat-free quiche option offered) as we entered the dining room. The food was good, tasting like it was made in a home with a gifted mom at the stove rather than a more stiffly formal gourmet presentation. LOCATION: Groton is a tiny town. The inn is a two-minute walk across a pretty stream to the block-long main street. No food options open besides the inn, and just a single hobby shop and gift shop (super nice proprietor!) in town open during our stay. A car is essential unless you plan to remain in your room, but Groton is conveniently well-positioned between the major finger lakes to get you to the variety of wineries, attractions, and walking towns in every direction. A five-minute drive will take you to some glorious lakeside scenery. HOSTS: Really great. The two guys who run the inn handled the booking professionally, were friendly and funny yet not pushy during breakfast, and knowledgeable about the area. There when we wanted them, not in our faces when we wanted privacy. A real relief after some recent B&B experiences. For once, we wished we'd had fewer plans and more time to sit and chat with a host. VERDICT: We almost always stay with family when we visit upstate plus there are many, many options in the area. This inn was not decadently luxurious or in a town setting with tons of walk-to-it options, but it ranks among the best of our many past B&B experiences, so gets a full five stars. If we opt for another inn visit when upstate and stay there, we'll be coming back for the comfortable and pretty setting and for the excellent hosting that was pretty much our ideal when it comes to B&Bs. read more

Doug and Peter are absolutely delightful and they will make you feel right at home! The food is absolutely amazing and the rooms are very beautiful. I go to dinner here often and there is always a new menu with finely cooked food. I've stayed overnight here twice and love the elegance. The atmosphere is great for bridal parties the night before the wedding or a mini getaway. They also have a great space for pictures. The entire in is decorated very well. I got proposed to here! it is cold in Central, NY, but the owners decided that two space heaters was enough to heat their glassed-in porch dining room on New Year's Eve. They were wrong. At $30 a plate we expected not to be seated in plastic folding chairs. The chicken breast with brie and apples was served cold and parts of the CHICKEN were RAW. The butter refused to melt in the baked potato and the glazed carrots were also served cold. The waitress seemed to think checking in at the table every 20 minutes was acceptable. If you like coffee from a hospital waiting room vending machine or from the waiting room at the oil change establishment you frequent, you should enjoy the coffee served at the Ben Conger. read more

This is the best kept secret in Central New York. 20 minutes away from Ithaca, New York and the Finger Lakes winery region, this place is a definite do over. My wife and me were actually there for a small intimate wedding reception and we felt immediately at home. Innkeepers/owners Doug and Peter welcomed us like family. The food and service at the reception was excellent and Doug was the perfect bartender for our small after party. The best part was yet to come. Our bedroom was cozy and comfortable with a gas fireplace, a huge bathroom with whirlpool tub and the most comfortable bed that would rival any 5 star hotel. I can't forget to mention the great breakfast with fresh fruit, our own coffee dispenser and a delicious breakfast bagel sandwich. We stayed at the Ben Conger Inn on the recommendation of a friend. When we arrived late due to traffic one of the owners waited up for us. We were greeted with a smile and a hug. The house is well kept and very clean. Our room was spacious and the beds comfortable. Every inch of our room and the common areas is full of interesting decor. Wifi was easy to access and worked well. We had some down time over the weekend and enjoyed speaking with the owners Peter and Doug over some drinks in the bar. They clearly love what they do, make a guest feel like extended family. The breakfast was different every day and was amazing everyday. If you want a very special experience book a stay at the Ben Conger Inn. We really tried the bed and breakfast bc my wife wanted to try something different. We normally stay in a commercial hotel in Ithaca when visiting Ithaca It was my first stay at a BnB and I enjoyed it more than expected and would stay here again. Highlights were the staff and ownership. The food And snacks at the bar and just the feeling that you were in the company of good people. After staying in a lot of B&B's over the years, I was expecting a lot more and was quite shocked on the not so good experience we had especially after reading all the good reviews of this place. When I read about the wonderful breakfasts that they were served, I thought to myself "boy, we got screwed!" I told my husband and he even asked me "Are you sure you're reading about the Benn Conger Inn?" First, I was expecting to be served...not buffet style. The first night we had a very pedestrian coffee cake, yogurt, dry cereal and cantaloupe....no home baked, fresh muffins, omelets, scrambled eggs, ham, sausage or bacon. The second day we had quiche which was still in a foil tin and I know was store bought. They could have least taken it out of the foil tins and presented it on a nice dish! It had a funny flavor as if the cheese was strong. I couldn't eat it! And then the usual yogurt, dry cereal and cantaloupe. I have had better breakfasts at a Hampton Inn. For dinner I had veal oscar. The veal patties were breaded and just looked like what I've seen of frozen patties. The sauce did not taste home made and the asparagus was a little woody and hard. The fried potatoes were over cooked and very salty. The beef medallions were nothing to write home about. The desserts were good. I've had worse but I've had better too at a B&B. Tasty french onion soup too! Nice selection of wine, good service, big portions, great atmosphere except for the disruptive kids at another table who's parents couldn't control them! We stayed in a room in the other house. I don't think anyone has stayed there for awhile because it was really musty smelling. Even after opening the doors to get some fresh air in and turning the A/C on we couldn't get the smell out and our clothes reeked of it when we took them out of our suitcases when we returned home. There wasn't anywhere to hang your clothes...not closet which I wish I was told that and I would have picked another room. The owners are very hospitable and friendly and great hosts but I was very disappointed. I paid the same for a room at a B&B in Camden, Maine last year and the difference is like night and day! read more

Came here on a Saturday and were seated right away. They had two small parties going on. Service was prompt and nice. Martinis that we ordered were pretty good but not great. Huge though. My wife ordered the strip with blue cheese topping and I ordered the prime rib. They came out way too quick... Im guessing they grabbed the dishes from the food that they prepared for the parties. My prime rib was cooked fine but was not very warm which basically means it was already prepared and they just warmed it up a little. Tasted ok. My wife said the same. her steak looked manufactured and mot real. Overall, food was decent but not for the $20+ price we paid for each. read more

The Benn Conger Inn is the most lovely place! My husband and I and our full bridal party spent our wedding weekend at the Benn Conger Inn. The rooms are Beautiful, each with its own decoration scheme and personality, and there are lovely common spaces where everyone can gather. We also hosted the wedding brunch here, and the food was delicious. Doug and Peter were an absolute dream to work with. Both were super quick and helpful correspondents via phone and email. They were really friendly, really organized, and never made me feel stressed about any part of the planning process. I'll always associate the Benn Conger Inn with one of the most love-filled weekends of my life, and I can't imagine a more perfect backdrop for spending quality time with dear ones. read more

Attended a wedding this past weekend at the Benn Conger Inn, 206 West Cortland Street in Groton, New York. It was a beautiful place to have a wedding and reception. Although the wedding wasn't as spectacular as it could have been, one of the gentleman(Doug) that runs the establishment, told the lady who made the wedding cake (professional cake maker) that she could not set the cake up inside in the air conditioning. After he had made an agreement earlier in the week with the bride's parents, that the cake could be set up inside in the air-conditioning so it would not melt. I am related to both the professional cake maker and the bride. In my opinion the white-haired man that runs the Benn Conger Inn, did not think that what he told the cake maker would get back to the bride's family. Well that was a mistake on his part. The cake was going to be a beautiful three-tiered cake, with wired roses cascading down and around the three layers of cake onto the table, there was going to be chocolate initials and musical notes also placed around the cake and the cascade of roses. The white haired man that runs the Benn Conger Inn refused to allow Janet, the cake maker to set the cake up inside, unbeknownst to the bride's family, he told Janet to set the cake up outside. Not being able to put the cake in the air-conditioning as agreed-upon previously the musical notes, candies, and initials started melting and could not be used. Janet the professional cake maker, had to set this cake with buttercream icing up outside on a table that was unlevel, with no help from the management or wait-staff of this Inn. The white-haired man refuse Janet any help in carrying or setting up any of this huge wedding cake. Needless to say, the bride was very disappointed in the presentation of the cake that she ended up having. Since the table was unlevel, the tiers could not be stacked on top of each other and the roses could not be laid around the cake with the musical notes, candies, and initials. This man was also very rude to Janet (the cake maker). After carrying and setting up this wedding cake by herself in a completely different arrangement then had been planned, Janet, the cake maker, was told by this white-haired man that there was nowhere that she could wash and freshen up so that she could attend the wedding. Which was a huge mistake, because Janet is the bride's, aunt's sister-in-law. There was about 100 people that attended this wedding, the Benn Conger Inn supplied and out house for the women and men to use outside. The women in long gowns that attended the wedding should have never had to use an outside porta potty. This, I thought was very rude on the part of the management of the Inn. How many women do you know that wear long gowns, that want to use a porta potty that man also use? We all know that men are not the most perfect shots when using the restroom, especially after a couple of hours of an open bar. The reception was 5 to 6 hours of an open bar. Some of these women were wearing gowns that ranged from $300 up in price. The reply when management was asked at the Benn Conger Inn, was that no one was allowed in the Inn after 6 PM. The problem with that is there were guests of the wedding staying at the Inn so they were going to be going in and out anyway. The guests of the wedding were not deviants they consisted of lawyers, judges, and other professional people. The reception lasted till 12 PM with open bar. I would think that when you pay an outrageous amount of money to have a wedding and reception somewhere, that they would offer you access to the facilities. It also took 2 1/2 hours for the staff to serve dinner from the time they started with the bride and groom table until they served the last table, so nobody ate together. I would NEVER recommend this establishment to anybody to use, for any special occasion. The management will kiss your butt to your face and turn around and do you dirty behind your back. This young ladies wedding should have been the most memorable night of her life, and without flaws, instead there are things about her night that she was unhappy with. I know her parents arranged and paid for a flawless wedding. This should never have been allowed to happen, at any young woman's wedding. Stayed August 2015, traveled with family read more
