Chicken Pad Thai and Fried Alabama Roll
Rik J.

My wife and I were sitting home a few weeks ago and decided we wanted to try something different for lunch. Benja's is fairly close to home, and seems to be priced on par with other places like this. My wife was definitely set on sushi, and when she decides on something, it's kind of a short form miracle, so I just go with it at that point, because it's kind of a rare thing. Now, I've been on a Pad Thai kick lately, having tried it from a few different places (this being the third), so I decided on it, while my wife went with the Fried Alabama Roll. I drove up there and ordered the food, and goofed around taking selfies with the decor while I waited for them to prepare it. The woman who took my order seemed nice, but it's difficult to gauge personality when you're ordering take-out. The food was ready pretty quickly, and I took it home, and we ate it. My wife really enjoyed her Fried Alabama Roll and said that the seafood tasted fresh, while the outside was nice and crunchy, just the way she likes it. She said the sauce was good and not overpowering like it is at some places. My Chicken Pad Thai was ridiculously delicious! It had the perfect amount of everything, and fed me for two meals, which I feel really adds to the value of the meal. I really love the peanuts in it as it adds to the texture and flavor, and it wasn't overly greasy. The chicken was nice and tender, and they prepared it with no spice, as I requested. Yeah, I'm wimpy when it comes to spiciness. It's the best local Pad Thai I've tried. Yeah, I'll definitely try this place again when I'm in the mood for Pad Thai.

Stopped by the new location for a to go lunch and I was surprised how nice it is inside. It looks like they have counter service and sit down. I got the spicy crawfish fried roll and a ginger salad. I wish they had some lunch specials, maybe they did and I overlooked them. I haven't been since they moved from Tillman's corner but they are still fresh and good!

Sticky Rice with Mango

I could go on all day about how much i love this place. I have had anything i havent liked! My favorite is the mango sticky rice and the peanut sauce with the summer rolls is perfect. The lady thats usually in the drive thru is very nice and quick, ive never had any problems or anything missing out of my order. 10/10

The establishment was very clean, which is very much appreciated. The service was good. I was a little confused because she walked up to take my order at my table but I had to pay right away. It was during my lunch time, and I told her I wanted to put my order in to get it started since my lunch time was limited, but I was waiting for a friend so I could put their order in too. I ran my card for my order, then when my friend arrived and put their order in I ran my card again and then I ordered extra rice and ran my card a third time. It would have been a little more convenient if I was able to pay the entire bill once I was done with my meal. The food was okay, not the worst but also not the best.

This restaurant has become one of our absolute favorites. We order out from here more than I'd like to admit. We like to call it in about 30 minutes ahead of time so everything is ready for pick up. We are always so pleased and ridiculously excited to get our "Benjas fix". A couple of our favorites are the Crispy Chicken with the white rice upgraded to fried rice. Also the Vegetable Pad Thai. My husband and I split our entrées because oh my goodness that crispy chicken on the Pad Thai is oh so good. I started thinking I would never be able to find a good Pad Thai around but Benjas is just right for me. Four spicy stars with extra lime and I'm in heaven. After eating here go next-door to Glazed Donuts and try their cream cheese filled. Perfection!

"Mild" red curry chicken that was so hot I gagged!

From my reconnaissance results, everything was wonderful at this restaurant. The hostess greeted me immediately and gave me a tour of the restaurant when I told her that I was surveying and comparing different Japanese restaurants in the area. She asked questions about my event and what I wanted in the experience. The restaurant was bright and clean, which I absolutely loved. Other places were way too dark for my preference. We toured the bar area, the sushi area, and the hibachi area. Everything was clean, organized and inviting. The hostess was very friendly, informative and helpful. She asked about the times that I might come and even suggested the best times for particular days. I felt so comfortable that I wanted to end the tour and order something to eat on this mission, but I decided against it until I found out that they serve dim sum. Since these delicacies are generally not available where I live, I decided to try a few of my favorites. While the taste of the shrimp & pork dumplings was underwhelming, the sesame balls were perfect. I am excited to bring my family here for the hibachi experience and I will update this review afterward. Update after the hibachi experience. When the five of us arrived on a Friday at 5:30 PM, we were greeted immediately. My tour guide from the previous day, remembered me and told the hostess to seat us at a special table. Then the usual process of hibachi started. Our cook was very interactive, funny and entertaining. He prepared our food wonderfully, seasoned it well and entertained us expertly. My cousin, whom had never experienced a hibachi dinner/entertainment prior to this, thoroughly enjoyed her dinner and raved about coming back sometime soon. We all had such a wonderful experience that we will return.

Shiso's got personality -- the sushi here is fun, creative, and full of surprises. You can tell…read morethey actually enjoy what they're doing in the kitchen, which makes it easy to enjoy what's coming out of it. The fish was fresh and flavorful, and the rolls had that nice mix of texture and flair that keeps you guessing in a good way. Now, about the dim sum: the ribs with black beans turned into a bit of a bone buffet (great if you're part-time paleontologist, less great if you're hungry). The pan-fried gyoza seemed to have skipped the "fried" part of its job description -- more soft than sizzle. But the sushi? Solid win. It's the reason you come here, and the reason you'll come back. Shiso is the kind of spot that makes Mobile feel like it's playing in the big leagues of sushi creativity -- just maybe let someone else take the dim sum experiment for the team.

I really wanted to understand the hype around We Roll, especially after seeing so many glowing…read morereviews on Instagram. Unfortunately, I left wondering if we all went to the same place. The concept is great: all-you-can-eat sushi and Japanese food for around $25/person, but instead of a traditional buffet, you order from the menu and everything is brought to the table. Just know they charge $1 for each piece of sushi left uneaten, depending on the roll. We tried a little of everything. I ordered the hibachi chicken and my husband ordered the teriyaki chicken. Both came out fairly quickly, but both were dry AF. The sushi, on the other hand, was actually good and tasted fresh. Service was another story. Some of our sushi took around 20 minutes to arrive...and we're talking two pieces at a time. Then came the part I couldn't overlook. One piece of sushi arrived with hot eel and spicy mayo on top, but the fish itself wasn't warm, which immediately made me question how long the rice had been sitting. I also noticed spots in one of the sauces that looked like something growing in a Petri dish. I asked whether the sauces were prepared ahead of time and was told yes, they're made in advance and refrigerated. And then I went to the bathroom. Nope. It was dirty enough that I decided I could hold it until I got home. For me, when the restroom isn't clean in a restaurant, it makes me question what's happening in the areas I can't see. Overall: Yes, it's only about $25 a person. But inexpensive doesn't mean my standards for cleanliness, food handling, or service disappear. I'd rather spend more or skip the all-you-can-eat concept altogether and go somewhere else. The sushi itself had potential, but between the dry entrées, slow service and cleanliness concerns, I wouldn't return. And I'm genuinely confused how Instagram has convinced me this is a five-star experience
