My family and I visited Benihana for their power lunch special. It was a 45 minute wait to be seated and once we sat at our table, our waitress seemed very flustered and was unable to properly take our order. We were told that an appetizer we ordered may come before the chef came or after which was odd because that's never been an issue before. Once the chef came, I noticed he didn't cook the food with garlic butter which altered the taste we are used to. I then requested garlic butter and was told to ask my server (they are now charging for that, maybe that's why he cooked with regular butter?). Not even 5 minutes after eating our food, our waitress was already offering us boxes to go. I understand that the power lunch is a 45-minute meal or else Benihana has to pay the bill, but it had barely been 30 minutes so we felt very rushed and uncomfortable. When we were paying our bill, I requested to put in my phone number for the rewards and the waitress gave me the tablet and walked away without giving me instructions on what to do next. I made a reservation for me and my son today. We arrived about five minutes late, but everything was OK according to the nice host. We got put on the waiting section. I did put on the comments that we were celebrating my birthday, but nobody recognized it at the front. We did get sat in about 15 minutes. After we got sat , there was an awkward weight for about 15 minutes until somebody came and asked us for drinks, but never recognized. It was my birthday. Finally leave the Chef showed up and was very kind to my six-year-old son. Very uplifting attitude. He might need a little bit of practice on his tricks cause most of them didn't work for him, but I'll give you all the love in the world for his effort, my son enjoyed even the misfires you made him laugh. I was told by the host that if I signed up for some program, I would get a free appetizer which was completely false. I got charged for the appetizer. The bill was dropped off and dessert was never brought. My Son asked me for again to get dessert for something special for my birthday. I did tell him we were supposed to get something, I got up to go to the restroom and apparently my six-year-old went around telling everybody it was my birthday, but I think he miscommunicated and everybody thought it was his birthday, but it was fine. Finally the girl that brought our drinks said we had free dessert. I had already brought the check and tried to charge us, which seems kind of funny because I thought dessert came before the bill. We come regularly here, me and my son. He is six years old. I got full custody of him when he was two and has been his favorite place to eat, but sometimes this place disappoints me. I did not enjoy my recent outing at Benihana! We went as group of 5, 2 of which were celebrating their birthdays and collectively we were celebrating one of us who had just gotten a clean Cancer free scan!! We arrived happy, lively, and ready for a show!! Benihana essentially snatched all the fun out of our dining experience and killed the entire Vibe!! Our reservations was at 7. We weren't seated until after 8 and the whole time we had to stand in the bar area where the employees kept opening the door!? It was windy and freezing cold outside so we couldn't even enjoy our little drink & mingle time while we waited! We get to our table and have to wait another 15 for our order to be taken. We were given soup and our salad came shortly after. Side bar- they really need to work on their soup and salad because that iceberg lettuce with one cherry tomatoe was ridiculous and that greasy, salty fried onion soup was just gross! Some of our party couldn't use chop sticks so we requested forks- those forks never came even after asking twice!! After we were given the soup and salad, we just sat and waited and waited! The waitress keeps refilling our drink cups and announcing our chef will be there shortly, but no one ever comes. Now it's 8:50 and we still don't have food or any clear time frames of when it's coming so I get up, and go to the front to ask for a manager. I finally speak to Nick and tell him our reservation was at 7 and it's now almost 9- it's getting super late, and we still don't have food! He says he'll send somebody over.. Now it's 9:20 and the chef finally comes out and starts! By the time he's finished, it's almost 10 and everyone's just ready to go home. What should of been a fun show, just sounds like a bunch of noise because everyone's now too tired, irritated, and full off the soda and water we drank while waiting to eat! Unfortunately, most of us just ask for to go boxes and pack our food to go. It's now 10:15 and they finally come and offer us dessert- most of us declined- they sing Happy Birthday to the Birthday parties at our table! We get our check and because some of us had the birthday coupon, we get this whole spill about them no longer being able to scan them due to some company fraud situation. The policy now is that you have to forward the email you received to them, wait for them to verify that the coupon is your name and then they will apply the discount! This charade took forever, so that was more time sitting and waiting because the waitress had to separate the bill and have each person forward the coupon blah blah blah- I'm done done by now!! This whole experience was a complete drag and after paying roughly $80 per person for a horrible dining experience, we'd missed our movie reservations, so we just ended up calling it a day! Waited 10 minutes just for the lady in the front to seat us exactly where we said we didn't want to be seated . This is by far the worst benihana in the area. As a resident of downey i would rather drive to the Anaheim location then dine here. They have no sense of time management even if you have a reservation. The management is very poorly trained in customer service and does not know how to handle stressful situations. They would rather blame the guestt instead of their mistakes. Even with a reservation we waited an hour and a half this last time and close to 2 hours the time before. We have given them chances over the years to do better but nothing has changed. Complements to the chef and the wait staff however, they were great and did a great job. I've come here a few times with my coworkers, and it's a hit every time. I noticed that their menus have changed this time, and that there was some wagyu offered. We all decided to try the A5 Japanese Wagyu. This was the second time Chef Quail had served me, and he is always amazing! He's funny and super talented. He was considerate to cook the veggies and the fried rice together so that we're not waiting for our food one after another. I personally love the mustard sauce over the ginger sauce, with some hot sauce as well. The A5 Wagyu was cooked perfectly, but I did think it was over seasoned. He asked me if it was salty, and I told him ever so slightly. I had a bunch of leftovers, and when I reheated the food at home, it didn't seem salty anymore and was seasoned well. I personally am not a fan of the onion soup, so I opt in for the miso soup. And to end the meal, the green tea is always a nice closer. This was my first visit since my gluten sensitivity began. We took our son for his 29th birthday. Gluten free was NO PROBLEM. I was relieved. They had Kikomann gluten free soy sauce. She served me first then made everything regular for the rest of the guests. Steak was tender. Food was on par. Service was great. They sang to my son and made him a fruit bowl from the bar garnishes. He's lactose intolerant. It was cute! Place looked really clean. I have no complaints and we will be back! We go to this Benihana's regularly bc it's the closest, we usual have a pleasant experience. Went for my daughter's bday today and had the worst server, Melody. Upon our first interaction she already treated us like she was annoyed. She got 4 out of our 5 orders completely wrong. Ordered edamame and she forgot it after we reminded her twice. Didn't get it until the end of our meal. She never offered to refilled our drinks. When I made the reservation I specifically put bday celebration and she almost forgot to offer us ice cream. From start to finish she was absolutely unpleasant. Our chef Leo was cool. I'm sure he could tell I was getting irritated, but he did his best to correct our orders and make the kids laugh. A single sheet of paper affixed to a black book clearly states tell everyone there is currently no wait times, if a caller asks. Reservation times are a joke, used open table, confirmed reservation. Upon arrival 90 minute wait time with the reservation. Talked with others waiting and departing they all complained about wait times. All told 90 minute wait time.
