Honest. Compassionate. Professional. Friendly. Unfortunately, you can't describe many businesses using all four words. I am happy to say that Benham's shines above all, with a level of integrity that far surpasses what we have come to accept these days. They exemplify what a reliable, trustworthy, local business should be. At 4:00pm, on 4th of July weekend, I discovered that my mother's car, (which doesn't get used by her), was long overdue for inspection. With very little hope that I would be successful, I attempted to make calls to try to remedy the situation. When I reached Benham's with a live voice answering, I was surprised. I asked about cost and procedure. Acknowledging that it was late on a holiday weekend, I wondered when they could accommodate me. He asked when it was set to expire. When I replied that it already had, he said, "Come on down, we'll take care of you". "Care" was indeed what they provided. Despite a thorough detailed inspection, I was in and out in less than half an hour, for the exact (very reasonable) price I was quoted on the phone. The technician could not have been more courteous and professional. While I waited, I witnessed the staff helping someone replace a tire, and serving many (obvious) regulars, with fill ups and conversation. This is the type of business we need more of. Used them twice in the past year and a half because our repair garage suggests them. First time they were able to jump my battery but the "boss" told the driver they had to charge full price for a tow, which was over $100. This past week, the battery was the issue again and the driver couldn't boost it because he had a faulty booster. He admitted this while towing the car to the shop. We had already paid $100 cash plus a $10 tip to the driver. A call to the manager/owner got the response that the battery might have died during the drive anyway. When asked what the cost for a battery boost would be, he said $75.00. Did the price go down from 18 months ago? We said "so we are talking about $25?" He wouldn't budge. Disappointing. I came to Benham's Garage in Berkeley Heights for a car inspection last week. The car didn't pass due to a battery issue earlier that day. However, I was told that coming back within the week they would do another inspection at no additional charge since I already spent $75 at that initial inspection. I went in the next time and thought the car passed inspection which I am happy about, they charged me for it and denied initially telling me that it was no additional charge. The other thing that I am most upset about is that multiple employees got in my car with a cigar and one with a cigarette. I am a nonsmoker and could not believe someone would smoke in my vehicle! Actually shocked. The employee that did the inspection was nice but I could not be okay with the people who smoked in my vehicle. read more

The fine folks at Benham's were quickly able to fix my tire when my Ford dealership had told me I was loosing pressure because of fluctuating temperatures. Turns out there was a nail in my tire! I dropped my car off at Benham's around 8AM and it was ready for pick up by 12PM. Great service and will be back if I have any future car issues. read more

I would like to commend Joe Benham and his team for excellent customer service and honesty. I came in a few weeks ago to get my leaking tire fixed. Unfortunately, the young man who was about to work on my car, backed it into the hitch of a tow truck, denting in the back hatch back. Mr. Benham and his staff acknowledged the accident, immediately, and then Mr. Benham made arrangements to have my car fixed at an auto body shop and also paid for a rental car for the five days that my car was in the auto body shop. I am very impressed by Mr. Benham's actions and would like reviewers to know this. Also, they did a great job fixing the leak in my tire. I will always be a Benham's customer. read more

They did not get the problem solved and still continued to charge me an unreasonable amount of money. I will never come here again and will warn everyone I know not to use these people! This is by far the WORST place I have ever had the displeasure of using in my entire life. I was forced to use this place after a very bad snow storm caused my car to stall and due to my car blocking traffic, a cop called the nearest tow truck place and unfortunately it was this place. This guy named Joe the owner came and took 30 minutes at most to get my car out of a driveway that the cop pushed my car to and drove it to their garage which was 5 MILES AWAY. The next day I called to get my bill and these people told me I owed $430. I was shocked to say the least. They charged me $150 for the tow truck service, $20 for the mileage, $100 to get my car out of a driveway (that took ten minutes!) 70 for 2 days storage (it had only been 1 day at this point) and $75 yard fee (when I asked what this was he said it was to help with getting my car out of the lot when it was getting picked up wtf!). I could not believe the charges that he was adding to my bill they were ridiculous! When I spoke to Joe he was extremely rude and could not provide me with a good explanation as to why he was overcharging me this way. This place is a SCAM! These people are greedy and they take advantage of helpless people by overcharging where ever they can! Please BEWARE and take your business elsewhere! This place deserves to go out of business for their immoral behavior. read more

Benham's Garage has been in business in Berkeley Heights almost as long as I have lived here (50+ years), and I'm ashamed to say I've never used them until now. In my defense, I had a bad experience with a (different) Exxon station some years ago so that played a part in my decision. Just last week I had occasion to go there for a dead battery and my experience was nothing short of stellar. I dropped off my car, and when I got it back, I immediately noticed that the engine was practically purring and the drive home was extremely smooth. Joe (the owner) also informed me that my car was under some recalls and advised me to take it to the dealership for recall service (which presumably would be free). The next day, I went with my mother to drop the car off for the recall service and she ended up driving my car. Even SHE noticed that the drive was better than before! And after a new battery installation - how does THAT even happen?! These guys must have the magic touch. Anyway, got a call from the dealership that, after performing the recall work, they found an additional $900 of work they think needs doing. You better believe I will be taking that car back to Benham's for ANY other service or repair work it needs. Thank you Joe and staff!! read more

Huge shout out to the wonderful folks at Benham's on Springfield Avenue. They patched my flat tire in just a few minutes without having to remove it from the car. them. There is no substitute for great service. They have never charged for air and will put air in all four of my tires for me at night in the dead of winter without a second thought. Just because they are great people. Oh, and they clean your windows while you are getting gas. The Benham family have owned that gas station since before I was born. Benham's Garage gets a 10/10 in my book. They've helped me in numerous different ways along the journey of getting my Jeep WK to where it needs to be. They've done simple cosmetic stuff as well as suspension, body work, wheels, tires, and tune ups.
