I'm so disappointed. This restaurant had good reviews here and on other websites, so I went here for lunch with some friends. The food is not quite mediocre at best. The seafood pad thai is possibly the blandest pad thai I've ever had (and I've had many!), and obviously made with ketchup and mostly noodles. The green curry and the red curry both had way too much ginger, and not enough of much else. The lemongrass beef was unexciting. Service was as expected, and the place looked clean. But surely KW has better to offer than this? Even if I were desperate for a Thai food fix, I seriously doubt I'd come here again. read more

This is a great restaurant. Recently, They have updated the interior of the location and it looks amazing. My favorite items on the menu are chicken pad Thai number 422C, the vegetables spring rolls number 602 and the vermicelli number 209. Used to go here when before it changed hands and it was not bad. Have been here 2x since it changed names. Never again. Ordered large rare beef Pho ($7.99) It came with wilted bean sprouts and dirty wilted basil. When I complained the rotten vegetables were taken back and they did find a piece of basil that was half fresh. The Sriracha bottle was filthy with crusted left overs at the top. Disappointing take out. I ordered the mango salad to go, dressing on the side. Got home and opened it up to find a handful of mixed greens, two pieces of red onion about 10 slices of dry mango. No cashews, no peppers, no substance. This is my first time getting take out from this location. Next time, if there is a next time, I'll open and review before heading home. read more

This is one of my favorite places to eat in Waterloo! While some say it might not be as authentic, their food tastes solid and is one of the better places in Waterloo with decent prices! Their Pad Thai, Pad Siew are my go to noodle dishes. I also recommend their Vietnamese spring rolls. My favorite dish for the summer is 304, the BBQ pork, spring rolls, sugar cane shrimp vermicelli bowl, which offers a cool and light lunch for hot sticky summer days! read more

Absolutely horrible service. We waited for 20 minutes for a server to even take our order before leaving this time. We have been here before and had terrible service but this was a new level. Multiple people on staff were content to sit in the booth beside us and ignore us the whole time including our actual server. We have come to this location many times in the past and settled for the poor service but I think this will be the last time we even try. The tables around us weren't cleared, our table was not clean, even our seats had food on them which is more than I can say for our plates. This location used to be acceptable and have reasonably priced food but it seems the service staff have given up on the customer experience entirely. read more

Everything about this place is summed up in one word: MEDIOCRE. Went to Ben Thanh tonight, half hour before closing. One of the staff members told our waitress not to serve us as the kitchen was closed, clearly he didn't want to work anymore today. Bar was closed, so none of the fancy drinks that cover at least 3 pages of the menu were available. Also, an extensive list of desserts is located in the menu, which we were told most of the items are no longer supposed to be there. Ordered Fresh Shrimp Rolls, Chicken Corn Soup, Pad Thai. Service was comical, all cutlery and dishes were dirty and had to wipe it down myself with a wet napkin. Soup for two was served without a ladle, no fork and knife unless asked. Pad Thai served without crushed peanuts, and none available in restaurant, when we inquired we were told they no longer crushed their peanuts and offered whole ones instead, this was very strange. The real Phenomenon here is that this place is still open, and they have any customers at all. I really don't know how you mess up Pho, and Pad Thai etc but they have found a way. My Pad Thai today was gross: Salty, disgusting sauce, tougher than leather Chicken, no peanuts? No Lime? No Chill? The only Veg in the dish was a ton of crunch (huge) Celery slices?? (That was a new one for me). Absolute Crap! I have also had their rare beef Pho, it was very bland, watery, definitely really sub-par for a Pho place. Pho-Nomenal? We have been visiting here for a long time! Almost weekly now for years. While the food is pretty good I find things have been slipping lately. It has been a steady, downward decline for a considerable period of time. The service is either really good or really bad. I'm not sure who is managing the Waterloo location but I think they need take a really long and hard look at their operations and make some hard changes. The renovation made it look wonderful but it was obviously done to the minimum standards and the cheapest budget as everything is falling apart and in need of repair. The women's washroom is horrible. It smells bad and I don't think I've seen it clean in the last two years. The paper towel dispenser is never functioning. The floors are disgusting and the sink looks awful. The main decor is ok but as I stated it looks as though it was cheaply done. Never, never, never serve your patrons with plates that have chips out of them. Many of the plates either have chips or cracks. Get some new ones! Stop using scotch tape to wrap up the napkins. It's cheap and makes the napkin unusable and people will inevitably ask for more napkins anyway. The food is good which is why I gave it 3 stars. The pho is excellent! There are some quality control issues as well. When ordering the crispy calamari, the portions are always a gamble. We complained many, many times and it has gotten better but there is lots of room for improvement. Most of the other dishes are fairly good with good portions and fresh ingredients. The staff need to really improve on the overall cleanliness. When turning tables over, look at the chairs and give them a wipe. More often than not I am having to brush off my chair. A carpet sweeper would be a good investment as the floors are always dirty. Although we still enjoy our weekly visit and the food is satisfying they need to up their game and make it an exceptional place. They will start to lose customers over the cleanliness issues and people will start looking for a new place to go as we have. read more

Service was slow, took around 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. Food was prepared quickly and tasted wonderful, even though they messed up my order. I was served a extra large meal even though I requested a large and I was told I would only have to pay for the large but they still charged me for an extra large. 2/5 would still recommend to a friend looking for pho. read more

The entree arrived before the appetizer and one entree was also missing. Asked when the rest of the food will come and was told they would check. Have been going to Ben Thanh for 20 years, when it was one location on King st Downtown Kitchener. The quality has stayed the same over the years, which is very impressive as they have multiple locations. The prices have been creeping up the last few years, but still a regular customer. We were eager to eat some delicious food. We ordered the Spring rolls (501), the cream cheese wontons, and the Beef Vermicelli Platter. The apps were delicious and did not disappoint. However the Platter was not so good: the beef was hard and chewy, but the worst was the rice wraps, a few of them were still hard in the middle--like you could see the design of the rice paper still and would crack if we tapped on it. The server seemed too busy to check on us but at the end I mentioned that the kitchen should know that the rice paper was still hard. We've had it before and was disappointed with this visit as we were looking forward to it. read more

I used to come here all the time for their noodle soups but recently i find that their service and quality of food is going down. Once I had a waitress tell another waitress that she did not want to take us, and to find someone else. The other waitress clearly sighed at us and said she will be serving us. I should have just walked out at that point... I usually order a mango salad as an appetizer but the last time I went to eat at Ben Thanh the mango salad was so terrible I couldn't even eat one more bite. I asked for no onions, there was onions. I asked for chicken, no chicken. When I tried to send it back, there was an argument, she said mango salad does not come with any protein, even though i have had it a million times and you get to choose between chicken, shrimp and one other thing. And when she brought it back it was drenched in dressing, which I think is a fish sauce so it became way too overbearing. I wish I had taken a picture because it was like a few pieces of mango floating in a soup of fish sauce. Disgusting. And as I read in some other reviews, the service is below average. I always feel like the waitresses are rushing me out. I used to go back, even with terrible service, for the food but now I will not be returning. The last couple times I gave it a second chance but it has deteriorated into a joke of a restaurant like ye's used to be. Save your self from terrible service and below average food, drive 35 seconds to spring rolls. read more
