I've been going to Dr. Mandel for years. When I needed a quick cleaning done and there was no available slot open for a hygienist, Dr. Mandel performed the cleaning himself(!) just so I wouldn't have to come back another day. Other dentists would have passed me off to the appointment book. But, Dr. Mandel is not "other dentists." His attention to patient care and knowledge of dentistry is unmatched by other dentists hocking their used car salesmen coupon deals in the mail or on Facebook. When I was in high school, I had an injury that damaged several of my front upper teeth. I had to get porcelain veneers to correct my smile. After about 14 years of wear and tear, it was time for me to get them replaced. Dr. Mandel walked me thru all my options for redoing the veneers, and never made me feel like I was getting a car sales pitch. Cosmetic dentistry isn't cheap. But, my first set of veneers lasted almost 15 years. My last car didn't even last that long. So, spending money on my smile was a priority for me, especially knowing how far along technology had come over the years. Dr. Mandel is a leading specialist in Cerec, which is the Bentley of crowns today. Whereas my old veneers took multiple visits and weeks in between, wearing uncomfortable temps that fell out or didn't match my other teeth, the Cerecs were prepped and placed insanely fast, and with no discomfort. I cannot believe how amazing my new smile looks and feels. Dr. Mandel is a true artist. And, in terms of payment, Dr. Mandel was very accommodating with my modest income. I was able to make payments over the course of 2 years, cheaper than what I'd pay for a car lease. When work started picking up for me eventually, I was able to increase my installment amounts and pay off my bill 4 months ahead of schedule. I'm as much a bargain-hunter as anyone when it comes to shopping. I buy stuff from Amazon, and look for deals on household items when I can. When it comes to my body and health, I don't mess around. I firmly believe that you get what you pay for. I've been burned by bargain basement dentists and doctors that offered to save me a quick buck, but gave me horrible service or results. Don't cut corners when it comes to your body. Go to a specialist whose knowledge and attention to patient care is unmatched by most out there. Dr. Mandel is the best! read more

I first met Dr. Mandel at a lecture he gave on modern dentistry at the Price Pottenger Nutrition Foundation center in Lemon Grove. His passion for dentistry and the health of his patients' dental health is clear. I made an appointment immediately and had my "silver" (mercury) fillings removed and replaced with a polymer composite that has been fine ever since. He uses a soft-tissue laser for cleaning gum tissue damaged by periodontal disease. I'd been dealing with periodontal disease for years without success, and this was the turning point. From him I learned about the Sulca brush and other things to use to care for my teeth and gums, and now they're in better condition than they've been in for decades. Some of the reviews complain about shady practices and sucking money out of his patients. I've seen none of this. Quality dental care is expensive, even with insurance, but my teeth are more important to me than a few hundred dollars. I can replace the money. I can't replace my teeth. I've been going to Helix Dental Care for a few years now, and he is the best dentist I've ever had, and I've got the teeth to prove it. read more

I started to Dr. Mandel several years ago after having SmileCare and others through my work insurance. At the beginning my gums were very bad and I could have lost my teeth very soon..I had Lumineers which changed my smile and look good. Dr. Mandel introduced me and my mother (94 now) to the Hydrofloss system (the best), great tooth paste and health tips. I had work done and massaged my gums everyday and with Dr. Mandel's treatment my gums and teeth are doing great. I realize Dr. Mandel can be expensive but he will work with you according to your income especially with fixed income senior citizens and when you compare how kind and knowledgable he is always taking learning and taking dental courses to better his practice, and his holistic approach to health it is certainly worth the difference in the terrible care you get at the HMO's. Another note, he has never done anything that was not necessary for my mother or myself....we need more dentist and doctors like this. read more

He does the hard sell with expensive cleaning machines and wierd toothbrushes. I thought he was holistic but wants to sell all kinds of crap to me and is NOT holistic, does not do anything holistic, he just leaves out fluoride and no one does silver fillngs anymore ANYWAY. The receptionist weighs about 110 lbs but acts like she was going to kick myass when discussing the terms of the pricing, I actually ALMOST followed my gut feeling on that one with her attitude and staring me down, I thought it was funny that a tiny person acted like she was a repo woman, and hoped it wasn't for a reason, like they do have to go after people for their money...I wish I had fiollowed my instincts since I had to have the work redone elsewhere. He bills the insurance for other than what I received. His license is not currentt. read more

I'm giving this dentist a 4 at this point since I've only seen him twice, and need longer term care to evaluate completely and accurately, however, after reading some reviews about them being interested primarily in $, I will comment now. My previous dentist said I needed over $3,000 worth of dental work, had numerous cavities, and needed several crowns and veneers replaced. I wanted a second opinion and also to see a holistic dentist. Dr. Mandel found only 2 cavities, said I needed 1 crown, and while he did recommend a water pick for better cleaning, there were certainly no hard sell tactics. Everyone in the office was friendly and accomodating. They called to remind me of appointments and afterwards to check how I was doing. I just recommended to my adult daughter that she go to see him as well. read more

Dr Ben Mandel is the best dentist in the world & I have been to many dentists in my life. He is brilliant and a tremendous person! He took care of me for some extensive work (a bridge, 6 crowns and a complex, partial denture). Dr Mandel did a fantastic job with rescuing my teeth, making sure that everything fit properly. It looks incredible! I was ashamed of my teeth all of my life but now I can open my mouth and smile again. Everything was super easy from the scheduling process to parking, cleaning and booking my 6 month appt. Very meticulous and accommodating staff, facility is clean and organized. Another trip to see my favorite dentist. Lesson learned never to eat a hard candy. Great thing is I got a same day appointment and had a painless visit. Unfortunately I had a tooth pulled. I wasn't the happiest but Dr.MAndel used the dental vibe tool "distracts the mind from what he is doing"which in my opinion is the best invention ever. Thanks DR. I have been coming here for years and i use the hydrofloss/sulca brush/orarex combo and have my teeth cleaned every three months, like they recommended. I have been going to Helix Dental care since 2008 and it is amazing to have great holistic dental care! I never have trust dentists, but Dr. Mendel is one Dentist I can trust.
