    Dusk View Atop The Plateau
    Shane J.

Being a Philadelphian native of course I have frequented the Belmont Plateau for many years! This beautiful area in Fairmount Park deserves to be highlighted!Great Views...lots of space for baseball/soccer games and long distance track teams can be found here! Now on the social side of things...The Plateau used to be and apparently has continued to be the best place to hang out with friends after dark! In my younger days...you put on your best outfit and go cruisin' ....some of my best youthful times was at the Plateau! During this unseasonably warm weather in October I was out on a weekend and passed through the Plateau...Wow is what I can say! Now there are food trucks and makeshift bars set up for all your needs! It was crowded and everyone was in good spirits and just hanging out in front of their cars! That image is Soooo Philly! So...I'll say now my hanging out days in the park are over...but as a Philly native it's great to see the tradition of the Belmont Plateau continues!

A true hidden gem in the city. Probably the best view of the Philly skyline. Lots of open green space. Perfect for a photo session. A massive amount of mountain biking trails, too which is what first brought me there. Not too crowded either. A really wonderful way to decompress away from the city. Bring some chairs and just take in all that nature has to offer

This place is gorgeous and a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon! You can see the beautiful Philly skyline from this location for some nice pics also. There is a nice park across the street to hang out and maybe get some exercise in. The traffic is a lot less and you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Im sure this would be a fantastic way to see the leaves changing in the fall. I heard some people opt to have weddings here, I truly can see why. I went to a Black Art Festival which didn't disappoint, I had a blast walking around and enjoyin the local artist. They had food in the back which I didn't have time for, but didn't purchase anything, but maybe next time. I had way to much planned and little time here. The underground railroad is at this location, would have loved to do a tour.

Belmont Plateau -- 4th of July fireworks, 2019
    L L.

Belmont Plateau is the setting for Will Smith's "Summertime" song. "Back in Philly, we'd be out in the park. A place called the PLATEAU is where everybody go..." Yes, this is it! And there is no better time to visit than summertime proper, specifically for FIREWORKS on the 4th of July! Smith's song was a quintessential 90s snapshot of Philly, and I was so nostalgic to see glimpses of the same old things still happening this summer on the Plateau. We had to park a ways away. Cars lined the road in both directions for a good half mile down the road. However, there is still the show I always pictured from Smith's song, because some people choose not to park, in favor of a slow-cruise through the park driveway, see-be-seen, adding some beats to the atmosphere (a la "Leanin' to the side, but you can't speed through, 2 miles an hour, so everybody sees you..."). Will Smith is known for his clean lyrics, and drug-free Fresh Prince image, so there was a side to the Plateau (at least during the fireworks), that isn't gonna be in any Will Smith song! Once we got to the lawn, it was easy skanking, everywhere! (See my pics of the cloud!) Let's just say, though I smoked nothing, at the end of the night, I still smelled like weed. I wish my photos were scratch and sniff. I was ridin' dirty all the way home, just for showing up. My baby smelled like weed too. You've been warned or tipped, depending on you fancy. Past the main weed cloud amidst the tailgating set-ups at the fringe of the parking lot, were various groups of people all over the lawn. The lawn slopes downward, to a valley of more park area below. Along the slope, people were fewer and farther between, so it was easier viewing. Everyone was friendly and mellow, out for a relaxing night. The people vibe was really good. Various pop-up DIY fireworks shows were happening left and right, in addition to the nationally-ranked professional ones downtown (this year, 3rd best in the country). The park had their own fireworks at the base of the hill, and of course you could see the skyline with the Art Museum Wawa show going off in the nearish distance (close enough to hear it). Camden's show, too, could be seen (not heard). It was really cool to have shows going on everywhere! Cool to a point, because my one-year-old did not appreciate all the popping sounds. He was a good sport for a while, but it eventually overwhelmed him. So a couple bits of this experience may not be for kids. We left ahead of the cloud--er, I mean crowd--and headed down the Schuylkill past Boathouse Row, in time to see the Art Museum finale. The Plateau is very close, and driving was very easy. Since we were headed south, a stop at Philip's Steaks was necessary to cap a Philly-Americana evening. (Sorry Will, did not hit your fave, Overbrook Pizza.) I highly recommend the Plateau for fireworks. This has to be the coolest experience in Philly for multiple shows all around you, all at once!

This place is gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. You guys saw my photo from Bartram's right? These beautiful out of place city skylines are so amazing. I didn't know Fairmount had it. My boyfriend and I randomly stumbled upon it a few weeks ago and I'm so happy we did. If you have a dog, take your dog there. He/she will love all the hills and free space. If you have a good friend, a significant other -- someone special, take them here. It's so peaceful, and such a stunning view of the city. Pictures don't do it justice

Best place to sled! We usually have the place to ourselves!

We absolutely love a trip here perched above the city, technically still in it, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle to be able to regroup and just relax. The views of the skyline are simply lovely! The plateau is our favorite place to sled! We usually have the tall hills all to ourselves and getting there via 76 in the snow is pretty safe as the road is always cleared. I planned a sweet little picnic for my hubby for our 5 anniversary here in the fall. It was a perfect day and just chilling on the grassy enjoying some of favorite Philly foods with the city we love in the distance was uber romantic! Guys, if you're looking to surprise her, plan a date here! Do it right before sunset and you're golden. You're welcome! We also looked here for our wedding reception! You can get a permit from the Fairmount Park Commission for the space and you can also use the historic house at the top of the hill! It's a fantastic space but keep in mind you will need to have pop up restroom trailers, insurance for your caterer unless you're doing food trucks, which is AWESOME and perhaps and tent and dance floor depending on your party style. All of the pieces became too much for us, but I have it in tucked away in my mind for a more simpler version for a party or vow renewal one day. It was high on our list! Unique and true Philly style! There's plenty of free parking in the lot at the bottom of the hill and even a few parallel spots atop. There's an ok restroom house also. Located near the horticultural center, Mann Music Center and Shofuso House making it an easy place to stop for a sunset or quick view of the city. Stop by before or after a visit to these areas.

There's so much cool stuff within the city limits that I've committed to trying to explore…read moresomething new (to me) every week. Recently that meant exploring the trolley trails in west Fairmount Park and finding the stone spiral arch bridge. In the early 1900s, a scene trolley took people through the woods. Nature has reclaimed the trolley paths, but in recent years they have been converted into miles of hiking trails. It's not crowded--I only saw 4 other people, mountain bikers, on my visit. It's a great place to explore. It's shaded so the walk was cool. It's pretty level so the hike is easy. And if you know where to go, you can find this beautiful bridge that looks like a brick spiral. The years have taken a toll, so I wonder how much longer we'll get to enjoy it. It's cool to think that in the past so much work was put into creating a beautiful structure that really just needed to serve a simple function. Don't have time for a long hike? You can get to the bridge quickly by entering the trail from Chamounix Mansion. Park by the equestrian building and head in. It's probably less than a 1/2 mile walk to the bridge.

It is an old bridge that leads to nowhere because it is no longer being used. It is surrounded by a forest, and kind of hard to find. The best way to find it is to stay at Chamounix Mansion, and follow the trail behind the trees. It's worth checking out if you like to post on Instagram, and finding hidden gems that are off the beaten path.

A couple going into the restaurant stopped us as we made our way to the car. "What did you think?"…read morethey asked. I hesitated. "Well.... I thought it was very average; likely a one-shot deal for us. BUT, the restaurant appears to be popular, so you may think it's great." I hate assessing Core de Roma as less than wonderful. The owner is so gracious and wants everyone to be happy. But the reality is, with so many Italian restaurants in and around Philadelphia, you've got to be on top of your game. They start you off with warm Italian bread and a plate of tasty cannelloni beans in olive oil. We ordered calamari as an appetizer, described as being served on a "bed of greens." Had we known the "bed" was two meager leaves of lettuce, we would have ordered a salad as well. The calamari should be crisper and include tentacles in addition to rings. My husband's chicken Francese was pretty much indistinguishable from my saltimbocca. I like when the breasts are pounded thin, but these were sliced overly thin, and the portion, somewhat skimpy. One piece of T's was lemony, the other not. I did taste sage on my saltimbocca, but had I not known that the chicken was topped with prosciutto, I wouldn't have guessed it was there. I read that some restaurants don't serve angel hair pasta because it's easy to over-cook. You guessed it. Boiled to the point of being almost mushy, with sauce that literally had no taste. When we split a small piece of limoncello cake, T said "this is the most flavorful thing we've eaten." And sadly, I agreed. The restaurant is BYOB with a reasonable $5 corkage fee. The staff is young and efficient. There's a parking lot down the hill in the back. Ambience is okay -- despite some other Yelpers' complaints. The only thing needing improvement: the food.

a very belated birthday-dinner review, since I'm an established slacker. But this is also fitting…read moresince whether its been driving by it back in the day, or through gazing up at it on the hill when I was in Manayunk, La Collina is one of those places that has been in my peripheral vision for a few decades now! For 20+ years, I've known La Collina to be that fancy and classic-looking Italian restaurant on the hill that I've been needing to try. But it took coming across its name when doing my research for possible spots to go to for my birthday to put one and two together, and it led to quite the majestic experience. The friendly and hilarious valet attendants ensured that service was incredible before we even entered the building. And upon entry, we were treated to spot-on recommendations and quality service throughout the evening. For cocktails, I was in awe of the Anejo Old Fashioned, which used Patron and agave syrup instead of the usual whiskey offering, and I also appreciated the classic Negroni. For appetizers, the classic meatballs with homemade marinara and ricotta were an absolute delight, and the eggplant rolatini with spinach, prosciutto, and mozzarella was sheer perfection at its most decadent. For my entrée, I initially expected that I would be eating all the pasta. But the restaurant is also known for its seafood, and the risotto frutti di mare especially caught my eye. and with its calamari, clams, mussels, and shrimp, and perfectly cooked and seasoned rice it absolutely delivered the flavors! Toss in a salted caramel chocolate soufflé with a candle on top, and it easily made for another memorable birthday dinner and a deserving place to recommend!

Very disappointed in La Collina…read more We ALWAYS wanted to go here because we love italian and it looked awesome on the hill overlooking Manayunk. We booked reservations for our wedding anniversary here. I specifically asked for a window overlook view seat. This was not granted and we were placed in the back room by the bar. Service was poor. We spent 2 and a half hours at this restaurant mostly waiting for the food to come out and the server to bring us our check. I don't believe the server came back for drink refills until after we were done with out meals. The serving sizes like stated in other reviews are very poor for the price you pay. For 2 to eat here you are pushing 100 easily. I got the chicken parm and pretty sure there was a out 12-15 noodles with it. My wife did enjoy her seafood pasta with scallops, but the price outweighed the amount for sure. Overall I had high expectations for this place and it let us down big time. Hopefully they continue to improve so we can give it another chance.
