Bella Vista's pizza just got better...again. This family run restaurant has a new generation stepping up to the table. A woman with fresh ideas, wise enough to consult the elders and ask for their secrets. We've always loved the pizza at Bella Vista, but last night it was on another level. The crust was light and airy. The sauce delicious as always and just the right amount of blended cheese. Perfection. We asked our server what had changed and she told us that she was the newest family owner. She had taken the reigns and was rebuilding the menu by getting back to the basics. She asked the family elders, who had established the eatery in the 70s, for their counsel and original recipes. They told her of the specialty ingredients they had used. Then, the search was on! The picture she painted of these senior chefs scouring Costco and other stores for just the right ingredients was heartwarming. We also enjoyed fresh fettuccine Alfredo, the sauce, made to order, was fantastic. Rich, creamy with just a little touch of sweetness. They have live music scheduled and Benedict brunch on Sunday planned so far. I'm excited to return and see how the new/old menu unfolds. Went here today for the first time for lunch with a coworker. Overall, the place wasn't that bad. I decided to give the lasagna lunch special a try as it looked like an awesome deal for a piece of lasagna, garlic bread and a dessert. The portion of lasagna was huge! It could have easily been split between 2 people, but I toughed it out and finished it myself. It was tasty and wasn't too watery like you get at a lot of other places. My only concern was that the service was a bit slow. Today there was only 1 server working and the place was packed. When speaking with the manager who had to come out of the kitchen to check us out, he mentioned that a server called in sick today which left him short. Since it is my first time being here, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and give this place another try in the future. read more

You can even order extra GF dough ahead of time to take home, so it's known by people with celiac disease and others who are strictly gluten free. This was a mediocre spot for myself. Everything was just as you would expect in a typical bar. Bar food and pastas priced around 15$ I didn't find anything overly special that was worth a mention. The place itself is dimly lit as most bars are - we came here for a work lunch in a group of 15 and we were pretty much the only ones here for lunch. This place is close to being a great pizza place, but there's enough about it that's annoying that it gets 2 stars from me. First off, the pizza is good. It's not the best pizza I've ever had but it was decent, solid, tasty pizza. Lots of cheese, very good crust, and the sauce was good. Toppings were plentiful. Now onto the bad. The service. We were waited on by a surly looking, hobbling older woman who barely spoke two words to us. She communicated with us in grunts. It sounds funny but it's almost true. And then, when the waitress served us, she dropped (and didn't notice) a big piece of pepperoni on DH's jacket. Some things on the menu were kind of weird as well like "No substitutions please" - I get it, but on the other hand, if someone wants ham instead of bacon is it really a big deal? It was also slow. It wasn't that busy and our order was not complex. The atmosphere. I don't usually knock much off for decor but Bella Vista is really bad. Most of our dinner conversation was about what could be done to improve the look of the restaurant. It's very dated. The bathrooms are nice, though. The price. It honestly wasn't astronomical, but it was way more than I'd like to spend on decent pizza. Our pizza was over $20 for a medium. If you're in the neighbourhood and craving pizza by all means give this place a shot but I did not find the decent pizza to be enough to make up for the crappy service and high prices. read more

It looks like they have recently renovated the place and it actually looked pretty nice inside. Unfortunately that was far and away the best part of our experience. The server was very nice but she was slow getting to us and the food was very slow coming. When it did arrive the dishes didn't all come at the same time, she apologized for this but said she wanted to bring it while it was hot. I had the pizza and it was decent. The cheese and topping were pretty good, but the crust and sauce was below average. The other two people had pasta dishes and there were awful. The pasta itself isn't great and furthermore both the Alfredo and the marinara were bland. The Alfredo in particular was horrific. If you have to go then you should definitely get the pizza but if you can avoid going that would be the much better option. read more

I went to Bella Vista Restaurant, expecting to have an enjoyable dining experience with my wife. After arriving we were eventually given our seats in the restaurant, which was almost empty. Shortly after we were seated another family came in for a meal, causing my waitress to totally forget about us. After about 20 minutes, I waited by the kitchen door and asked the waitress to please come back to my table and take our order. The waitress mumbled something about another waitress coming over to serve us. After another long delay the waitress who sat us finally came back to take my order for a combination pizza and Caesar salad. I was surprised that the waitress didn't have either a pen or pad to write down our meal. It was another very long delay before our food arrived. When our pizza finally arrived it was not with the ingredients that we had ordered. When paying at the cash register, I mentioned about the very long delay to get my meal. The cashier (owner) said they were very busy today. When I mentioned that there was only one other table occupied in the restaurant he bluntly said, "The waitress forgot to give me your order. The next time you come back, let me know and I will make a special pizza for you with an extra ingredient." Since my business wasn't appreciated and the pizza didn't look right or have any flavour, I will never go back to this restaurant. I would have given a rating of zero stars, but that isn't possible when leaving a review. I remember often eating at Bella Vista Restaurant back in the 1980's and 90's, when they were rated as having some of the best pizza in Ottawa. The original owner prepared pizza with fresh dough, with his own sauce and topped it with real mozzarella cheese. Back in those days Bella Vista pizzas were prepared with homemade sauce, covered with lots of fresh toppings and tasted delicious. Therefore, given the inferior service and food, I really can't recommend this restaurant to anyone. I stumbled across Bella Vista one day while shopping along Bank Street. It is in that strip plaza at Bank and Alta Vista - just next to the big Rogers Independent Grocery. Bella Vista reminded me of that restaurant in Pulp Fiction where John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson hang out - it has the same hip/retro vibe to it. I was expecting a real diner/tavern type of menu and was surprised to note that it is mostly a pizza place - dine in and delivery. It is well known in the area for its pizzas, especially their gluten-free pizza. Besides the pizza, they do serve other Italian delights, like pasta. And, they have an all-day breakfast!!!! Smells good as soon as you walk in the door but smells are deceiving. My daughter got the fettucini Alfredo that was so full of garlic it upset her stomach and she said she thought she was going to be sick. Got the fully loaded pizza that looked amazing but was not. Not enough sauce. Pepperoni was huge pieces that looked like you sliced a pepperoni at the deli. Sliced meatballs on the pizza were thick and dried out and did not taste good. $20 for a small pizza and it was one of the worst pizzas I have ever had. Staff was friendly enough but it doesn't make up for bad food. Won't be going back there again. read more

Went here for absolute comedy show last night show was great but the service was awful the manager sat at the counter doing nothing all night. Servers were talking loudly behind us to the extent of me turning around and saying"ladies can you please talk some where else we are trying to watch the show and can't hear it". Took forever to get our food would have been faster to do it ourselves and even to get our bill took forever. All the servers were sitting around at one table doing nothing but talking. Underwhelming is the best descriptor I can think of. Came here on a Friday night for my friend's birthday dinner and I can't think of a reason to return, especially with Flying Piggy just down the road. So we arrived around 7 PM for our reservation and eventually was able to find where our reservation was. Before we were seated we were asked what we wanted to drink, which seemed like good service until we were told they were out of menus, which was annoying but enlightening as we were told they only had two kinds of wine, red and white which means minus one star for an Italian restaurant. I had been hoping for a nice Chianti but got "Red" which was some sort of Merlot blend. Wine deficiencies aside I figured a menu would appear, that didn't happen for a while until one of our party went and pilfered menus from other tables. If you are going to have a certain amount of tables, you should make sure you have enough menus. Once that got sorted out our waitress did do a good job, my complaints are more about poor planning than actual service quality although at one point I requested a fresh glass of wine and it took a while because they had to get some from the basement. Food wise it was a gigantic "Meh". Milady is of Italian descent so is a good authority on authentic Italian cuisine and this was not it. She had a shrimp fettuccine Alfredo and her enduring comment was that she felt as though the shrimp were overdone, as if they weren't cooked in the sauce, which is a big no-no for proper Italian cooking. I had spaghetti with Italian sausage, the sauce was good, spaghetti not great and sausage was really not good. Had been hoping for chunks of flavourful sausage but got slices of what tasted like pillers pepperoni you buy for $5 a bag and not proper sausage. If we had paid a few dollars less for our meals I would have been less annoyed by it, but at $18 for the shrimp fettuccine and $15 for the sausage spaghetti it was overpriced for what we got, especially since the accompanying garlic bread felt like over toasted wonder bread as opposed to proper Italian bread. Overall a dissapointement, however they do have live music and dancing which is nice. read more

Great food, but stay away the service is deplorable. This is super slow. I'm talking 1 hour at a table waiting for 1 pasta dish. I'd give it more stars but too often ( 3rd time here) that it's slow. Finally when it arrives I had to ask for a fork, and bread. The bread arrived when I was finished. I had to ask for each cup of water. I hated the service. I went to pay my bill and I told the manager that there is no excuse for waiting 1 hour for a bowl of pasta. He replied " we are having a rough night" with a scowl on his face. Never again. Went to BV last night for a birthday dinner with family. We had onion rings (nice and crispy), a large garden salad (fresh and large enough for four people as a side dish) a greek pizza (amazing, delicious!), spaghetti and meatballs (meh) and baked lasagna (yum!) Can't say other than the spaghetti than anything was less than delicious. Service was pleasant and competent. We've ordered takeout pizza from BV before but never eaten in. I would go back.
