There is also a delicatessen counter with pickles, chutneys, and a good selection of continental cheeses, including Comte, a kissing cousin of Gruyere. I eat this strong and slightly sweet cheese on its own, a cracker seemingly superfluous, and unnecessary. The foodies dream is made complete with a sit-down coffee shop selling sandwiches, hot drinks, light lunches, and those psychedelic meringues from earlier. A young couple came in to order drinks at a quiet time for the pub in the afternoon. The card machine seemed to not be working and this couple after trying repeatedly to pay for their drinks were told to return their drinks to the bar from outside, as they like most people of their generation were not carrying any cash. I felt acutely embarrassed for them as they were obviously made to feel extremely uncomfortable by the lack of empathy shown both by the serving barmaid and by the manager who was called. The drinks were then disposed of and the couple left, I'm sure never to return. I certainly will not return myself either as this episode of lack of understanding, compassion and downright rudeness on the part of the Orange Tree left such a bitter taste in my mouth.
