My husband and I pulled into the driveway and parked in the charming backyard. Walking up, the front porch is just adorable! If it had been warmer, I would have loved to sit out and enjoy the porch. We were greeted immediately by the owner and she gave us a tour and showed us to our room. We stayed in the Ann Eliza suite, the only room with a balcony. It was beautiful when you first walk in. Fluffy comfortable bed and those sheets!! Like heaven to sleep in. Breakfast each day was delicious. As I mentioned, I can be a piggy, so it took all of my willpower to not ask for seconds and thirds! Some of the courses LOOKED so simple and unsuspecting, but once you taste it, you can really appreciate and notice the unique flavors. Enjoy your stay if you decide to go!

We stayed most recently this past weekend and Jill & Rob made our stay perfect. We went for my birthday and upon arrival there was a sweet hand written card and a box of chocolate truffles. Jill also very kindly made our reservations for one of our nights dinners and also gave us so many suggestions for activities to do while in town. Of course the 3 course breakfast is top notch and absolutely delicious. One of our other favorites about the b&b is the private patio connected to the Ann Eliza suite which we stayed in. All in all we had a wonderful getaway and we cannot wait to go back! Thank you Jill & Rob!

I can not say enough about how great this B&B is. From the accommodations to the hospitality, I…read morecan not imagine any other inn surpassing it. The home is a beautifully restored and dates to the early 19th century. The guest rooms (stayed in the Carson room) were wonderfully furnished and exceptionally comfortable. Our room's bathroom is one of the finest of any place I have ever stayed. They have anticipated every possible need, from q-tips and cotton balls in the bathroom to a stocked fridge with beer, soda and water. A remarkable room. The food both days we stayed was also terrific. Especially the Eggs Benedict (one of my favorites), which was as good as I have ever had. But what I think sets this place a part is the hospitality. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we felt as if we were valued friends that came for a visit. We were met on the porch when we arrived. Introduced to other guest who were in the library. And promptly offered a glass of wine. While enjoying two glasses of wine with our hosts, they made suggestions (great ones at that) for dinner that night and the next and then called and made the reservations for us. After dinner on the first night, we joined our hosts and other guests for drinks and champagne to toast the first anniversary of fellow guest (who stayed at the inn on their wedding night as well). The Inn keepers provided the champagne (and wine) and had cute anniversary glasses for the toast. We sat talking to the other guests and hosts as if we had been old friends, well into the night. The second night after returning from a birthday celebration dinner for my girlfriend, we were surprised with one of the best chocolate cakes I have had. We sang happy birthday and again enjoyed the wine and company of our hosts. The attention to detail and hospitality without being intrusive sets The Red Door Inn apart. Simply Amazing!

Kathryn is such a gracious host, making sure every detail is just right and offering advice of things to do and places to see. Our room was very comfortable and well appointed. Breakfast was amazing and different each morning of our stay. In the evenings, we enjoyed her company as we wound down from our busy day. She is a big fan of The Voice and one evening we all got caught up on the current season! Canandaigua is a great location and has great options for dining in the area and Kathryn is very knowledgeable of the latest and greatest. We will definitely return next time we head back to the region.

Unlike the cookie cutter rooms of the typical hotel, each guest room here is unique, decorated with different antiques and amenities. In contrast to the antique 4 poster bed and traditional decoration, our room had a modern bathroom with a small shower. We also had a large jacuzzi which we enjoyed and a fireplace that we didn't try out with temperatures in the 80's. You can check out the decor and amenities of each room on their website to see which room you would like best. Note that the prices for some rooms do not include breakfast, for those who do not want to indulge, although their breakfast is something you do not want to miss. Scattered throughout the B & B are small refrigerators stocked with complimentary soft drinks and ice. There are several coffee stations with assorted K-cups and a nice selection of teas. Each day freshly baked cookies are put out. Each room has a basket of complimentary bagged snacks. Also scattered around and in the rooms are "emergency boxes" filled with things that you might need, but probably didn't bring, such as scissors, a flashlight, band-aids and batteries. As you wander the halls you will find bookcases with books to read and games to play and displays of tourist information. The grounds of the house are beautifully landscaped and you can sit in a rocking chair on the veranda, or have a picnic at the tables and chairs in the garden. For the more actively inclined, there is a woods behind the house with several walking trails. Each morning the guests would gather in the antique filled living room awaiting the start of breakfast. Breakfast was a communal affair, with all guests seated around the dining room table. Each morning Chef Nate would prepare a five star, three course breakfast. The first course would be a fruit dish such as a fruit parfait or fresh local fruit, the second, a savory dish such as Eggs Florentine or Baked Eggs (like a quiche without a crust) and the meal would conclude with a sweet dish such as crepes, a cinnamon scone, or a waffle with fresh maple syrup. Also available to nibble on were local grapes and freshly baked coffee cake, After breakfast Nate would discuss with the guests what their interests were and would provide us with recommendations on where to go, brochures and maps. While most of the wineries in the Finger Lakes are on the other lakes, there are a few in the area and Nate had passes for a discounted tasting. Lake Canandaigua is a short drive away as is Main Street in Canandaigua. Main Street is filled with interesting little shops, bakeries and cafes and you can spend the day walking from place to place. There are a few minor things about the Sutherland House that some people might find negative. The building is not handicap accessible. There are several steps going up to the main floor, and most of the rooms require a trek up a long, narrow, winding stairway. There is not daily housekeeping service. If you need somebody to pick up after you, this is probably not the place for you. There is no Innkeeper on the premises in the afternoon or evening. In the morning Nate takes care of things, but after that if you need something you have to make a call. The A/C in our room didn't work very well. Fortunately there was a ceiling fan that cooled the room off pretty well, and the floor to ceiling windows could be opened to let in the cool night air. Hopefully, they have repaired or replaced the a/c by now. All in all, if you're looking for a relaxing stay in the Finger Lakes, in a beautiful old building with a gourmet breakfast, I highly recommend the Sutherland House.
