Canandaigua is kind of a swanky Rochester summertime place..in the late fall/edge of winter walking…read moredown to our French bistro...it has the charm but a bit of the desolation of downtown Akron at 7pm (certainly not in the throes of the tourist season..) . Fortunately...this Finger Lakes head-of-the-lake town is very pleasant. We shook up the routine from our usual B and B and stayed here.. a very cool old Victorian place with a very cool Innkeeper (Karen and I talked the merits of Pink Floyd and also the local music venue CMAC). The Innkeeper swapped out her life in Hawaii for a very different kind of winter...but she kept her good island spirit along with the eclectic sense of these Inns. Good DVD selection if you are staying in for the night (along with Roku/cable TV)...including some decent indy movies. Room was charming... nice themes of the Women's Freedom trail on the wall as well. Breakfast was excellent along with some really fine house baked cookies. Easy parking in front.. The downstairs is a nice wood floored living room with the dining area. Will definitely be back..

My husband and I reserved a room at the Gridley inn for 1 night! We had tickets to a concert at the…read moreLincoln hills farm and didn't feel like the hour and a half drive home afterwards! We did notify them that we'd like to do an early check in seeing that the concert opened doors at 5! My husband also notified the b&b that I had an allergy to nuts and apples. We arrived around 4 pm and we had to ring the bell. We were greeted by a woman who did not introduce herself but we surely introduced ourselves! We were met by a very gruff woman who was the owner! Made sure to tells us no food in the rooms or drink! Use the common room! Being very accommodating people and very much the rule followers we said ok! Once in our rooms we found ourselves whispering, and my husband actually said why are we whispering, I quickly reply that that woman scares me! The house and our room was gorgeous, clean and well appointed. There were lots of places to sit inside and outside. We never took advantage of those, and also given that the owners always hung around the public spaces we understood why the other guests all waited outside for breakfast. (Not using the china, of course) To make a very long story short the owners are very over bearing! Both are crass and not welcoming! We could not use the "good" china outside of the dining room! My husband asked for orange juice and he got none, I drank mine and didn't feel comfortable to ask for more! There was suppose to be water available to all guest, when there was none, instead of offering to get us some they argued with each other about why there was no water! My husband and I just said Diet Coke is fine! We just grabbed our stuff and left! It must be noted that we are not new to bed and breakfasts! We have actually stayed in quite a few! We have always felt welcomed and more than comfortable! Not the case here! When you are not comfortable asking for orange juice there is a problem!

So very disappointing…read more Let me start by saying that I love bed-and-breakfasts, and I like how a good b&b costs about the same as a nice hotel room, but is more personal, individual, private. At least, it can be. In over fifteen years of traveling and staying at b&b's, I have seen them range from cozy and quaint to resplendent and regal. They've all been wonderful. In July I traveled to Fairport with my 3 y.o. daughter and her sitter for a local Korean daycamp. We booked a room to stay at the Clematis Inn, and my first interactions with Theda, the innkeeper, were pleasant. She was courteous and kind, even offering to bake gluten-free pastries instead of regular ones - my sitter can't have any wheat gluten. (I know how much more expensive the gluten-free flours are, so I appreciated this gesture). We discussed arrangements for my toddler's sleep and camp schedules, I mailed a check, and we eagerly awaited our vacation. Immediately after we arrived, I could sense something a bit "off" about this place. Yes, it is clean and pretty, and Yes the pastries are incredibly delicious (if I were reviewing the pastries, I'd give 5 stars) - however with comments ranging from "I keep a quartz crystal here to deflect harmful rays from my inn" to "I was a federal agent, but I am only allowed to tell my guests certain things about it" - I could see that Theda was not completely... hinged, let's say. Normally, an eccentric innkeeper would just color a good story, but I'm afraid this story ends badly. It started with the odd assertion by Theda that she was turning down other guests so that she could devote more time to us, and specifically, to my daughter. As a business owner, I found this implausible; as a mother, it was creepy. Things culminated to a head when we made up a bed with clean sheets - heaven forbid. Apparently Theda was hurt that we used sheets that were of "personal value" to her (though they were in the linen closet of a guest room), and she was offended that we did not ask her for permission to make the bed. But, the oddness took a turn for the worse when the innkeeper, between crying and yelling about her sheets, snapped at my toddler. That was the final straw for me, and we checked into a hotel that night. Travelers to Fairport, NY: beware of Theda at the Clematis Inn. You have friendlier, cleaner, more professional options elsewhere in town.

Theda remembered us from our prior visit when we called, and was very gracious in welcoming us back! Theda had a jug of ice water with orange slices ready and waiting in our room for us, and cut short an errand run to be there to greet us. As it was previously, the room was immaculate as was the attached bathroom. Both were beautifully decorated, and the bathroom had a whole bunch of (many organic) personal care items. The linens were very luxurious and were high quality. Breakfast each morning was delicious and made from organic, fresh, and local ingredients. She specifically purchased whole milk and fresh blueberries for our 2 year old. When she found out that our 2 year old's favorite berries were blackberries, those appeared on the table the next morning for him. She was extremely kind to our son, and went out of her way to interact with him. Theda was very helpful with local directions, activities, and places to eat while we were there which was great as it was a holiday weekend and a lot was closed. I would highly recommend a stay at the Clematis Inn!

I had originally considered the Hampton, and 15 days before my arrival in Rochester, I discovered The Inn. It had a comparable price but maybe not as much breakfast choices. Two days later, when I went to make my reservation at the Hampton, I discovered that they raised their room rates 15% since the last time I checked... supply and demand on their part I guess. Well, that made The Inn rate more than competitive, and the obvious choice for my stay. The Inn does offer a light continental breakfast, but they offer some things I wouldn't have gotten elsewhere. One was the charm of an older building with nice renovations. My room had more "character" than I would have had otherwise, and that included a large antique bathtub and a gas fireplace. Every person with whom I interacted was incredibly friendly and helpful. Vanni's Lounge downstairs was fun as well (separate review). And I got a slight discount for having a 3rd night in my reservation on a weeknight. I think that was a fair trade-off for missing out on a few Honors points.

Recently enjoyed a delightful stay at The Inn on Broadway…read more Truly, what a gem of an inn. I was traveling for work and was meant to fly from White Plains to Rochester mid week. However, the stormy weather had my flight delayed, delayed, delayed. Seeing that I'd be pulling into Rochester later and later, I decided to see about driving. This got me to Rochester earlier in the evening but I was pooped. The Inn on Broadway offered a warm welcome after a hectic day of travel. They have easy parking very close to the entrance (felt very safe). They offer valet if you're heading there for the restaurants but they don't valet for guests of the inn. Again, not a big deal because the parking is so convenient. The lobby is gorgeous. I was there during the holidays and it was tastefully decorated and brought the festive vibes. The woman at the front desk was excessively kind and got me all checked in. I was tired and really just wanted to order deliver (doordash etc) to my hotel room. I wasn't certain if this was ok with the restaurant in house but fortunately, she assured me it was fine and even hand delivered my door dash order to my room (in addition to giving me recommendations for a garbage plate, a Rochester specialty--I still haven't had one but my next visit I'm determined!) My room was completely comfortable. It was the perfect size to feel cozy without being too small. There was a window seat by the window which offered a nice view of the city. I love that they have Aveda shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the shower (as well as lotion and hand soap by the sink). Aveda is top notch and it's nice not to sacrifice quality hair care while traveling. I honestly have nothing but the best things to say about my stay here and wouldn't hesitate to stay again. Get to it!

The hot dishes were very tasty--crepes one day, oven pancakes the next--but not _so_ exceptional that I'd go out of my way just for the breakfast.

Location: It's in a beautiful neighborhood, on a picturesque block, within walking distance to Park Avenue, which has several great restaurants and shops. Comfort: The beds are insanely comfortable (reminds me of the W Hotel beds) and the rooms are very spacious with everything you might need (Netflix, mini-fridge; closet; complimentary lux bath gel, shampoo, conditioner; iron; hairdryer, etc.). The entire place is charmingly historic but also thoroughly updated / remodeled, so everything is in perfect working order and clean/stylish. Service: Gary, the innkeeper/manager, is amazing. He treated us so well and makes the most delicious homemade muffins and eggs for breakfast! He's friendly, caring, and a great resource throughout the stay, who is accessible but not intrusive. Getting around: Like I said, great location and also very easy for Uber/Lyft to find. We were going to rent a car but honestly didn't really need one. The hotel has been in his family close to 104 years and under Pat's management for 50 plus years! Pat is accommodating and a great bar tender! The waitress was right on top of providing excellent service and had a great sense of humor! Some folks I know have been under the impression that the American Hotel of Lima was permanently closed, but be assured they are not. They remain open Tuesday-Saturday serving food from 11am-3pm and 5pm-8pm however the bar is open 11am-8pm. A loyal customer. -Jean N.

It's not fancy, but it is down home- salt of the earth eats and folks. We had soup- which were both delicious! The other entrees were good, a solid 4. It could be a bit cleaner (check floor pics), but that kinda adds to the character of the place. It had the largest and oldest urinal I've ever seen!
