Our Silver Lining Mis-FORTUNATE (Synonyms: Lucky · Favored ·…read moreBlessed) Wedding postponed, Niagara off the Table, now what do we do!? After some research I decided on a Visit to the Chalet. I have stayed in some of the finest B & B's in the North East and visited with optimism despite our forced change in plans. WOW, the Universe plays the Best tricks. As we drove up a lengthy driveway I was struck by the Beauty of the Willow Trees dancing in the wind over a beautiful duck pond with a Blue Heron gracing its little Island. As we continued up the Driveway the Chalet came into view. We were greeted warmly by Pattie who helped work through some details. Soon Margaret joined us and offered another warm welcome. They asked us some open-ended questions (Morning Beverage of choice for one), offered Insights and shared recommendations, letting us know that our satisfaction was their focus. After seeing some common areas we were escorted to our room where every detail was covered to ensure we would be getting the most out of our stay. Our Room (Lee Suite) was appointed with tasteful furnishings and offered an instant comfort. We stayed for three nights and each morning, when we arrived at our desired time, we found a carafe of Coffee and hot water waiting for us to get seated. Breakfast is three (3) courses and changed daily. Dietary needs were addressed upon arrival and any personal likes and dislikes were noted for the visit, and future visits for those so fortunate. Every bite was delicious and well balanced. As a Inspired home cook I could tell these ladies truly enjoy crafting this deliciousness each day. One suggestion (my regret) would be to take some time to enjoy the grounds. I was so busy running around the lakes that I failed to do this adequately. It is such a relaxing environment that you need to take some of that in. I will make sure to do more of this on my return trip.

Quaint and charming, yes but also spacious and luxurious at the same time. The common areas are beautiful and huge. The front room has two fireplaces (one at each end). Perfect for sitting and relaxing with a coffee or tea if you happen to be there in the fall or winter. The rooms are spacious as well. But what really sets the place apart is the friendly and accommodating atmosphere provide by owners Joe and Kathy and THE FOOD! This is no basic eggs, bacon and pancake place in the morning. Breakfast usually consist of 3 to 4 courses, everyone of which is a delight to all the senses. Some of my favorites are the candied bacon, ham & cheese sliders and the pan-shake (a pancake and syrup flavored milkshake made with real pancakes, syrup, ice cream and milk)...YUM. You will not be disappointed. Jim

Tammy and Dave are excellent hosts and two of the nicest people we've met. We need more folks like them in this world. The room (Captain's Quarter) was spotless and very comfortable. It is THE best B & B we've ever experienced. We will be back next year! Thanks Tammy and Dave. you guys are awesome. Frank & Jeannie

Rosemary, the owner, does a great job making sure that you get the homey ambiance in her huge mansion while still making sure you have all of the creature comforts of a modern hotel (and even more than some hotels I've stayed at!). The first thing everyone asks me when I say I stayed at a B&B is whether I had to share a bathroom and the answer is no: each room has its own bathroom and mine was great and very private with a nicely powered shower and plenty of hot water. There's strong wifi, lots of outlets in my room, a super comfy bed and fluffy, clean towels and robes, lots of toiletries and little details to make my stay homey, and slippers to pad around in (no stilettos allowed in the house). I stayed in the Traveler's Rest room, which was decorated with quirky accessories from around the world, but each room has a different decor and a different feel. Downstairs, there is coffee and tea available at all hours, and when I came home from an event there were even some cookies to enjoy. In the morning I was greeted with a gorgeous fruit plate in the dining room, the first of a multi-course sit-down breakfast. I'm thrilled to have taken the chance on an independent spot in Rochester, and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to try something a little off the beaten path.

So very disappointing…read more Let me start by saying that I love bed-and-breakfasts, and I like how a good b&b costs about the same as a nice hotel room, but is more personal, individual, private. At least, it can be. In over fifteen years of traveling and staying at b&b's, I have seen them range from cozy and quaint to resplendent and regal. They've all been wonderful. In July I traveled to Fairport with my 3 y.o. daughter and her sitter for a local Korean daycamp. We booked a room to stay at the Clematis Inn, and my first interactions with Theda, the innkeeper, were pleasant. She was courteous and kind, even offering to bake gluten-free pastries instead of regular ones - my sitter can't have any wheat gluten. (I know how much more expensive the gluten-free flours are, so I appreciated this gesture). We discussed arrangements for my toddler's sleep and camp schedules, I mailed a check, and we eagerly awaited our vacation. Immediately after we arrived, I could sense something a bit "off" about this place. Yes, it is clean and pretty, and Yes the pastries are incredibly delicious (if I were reviewing the pastries, I'd give 5 stars) - however with comments ranging from "I keep a quartz crystal here to deflect harmful rays from my inn" to "I was a federal agent, but I am only allowed to tell my guests certain things about it" - I could see that Theda was not completely... hinged, let's say. Normally, an eccentric innkeeper would just color a good story, but I'm afraid this story ends badly. It started with the odd assertion by Theda that she was turning down other guests so that she could devote more time to us, and specifically, to my daughter. As a business owner, I found this implausible; as a mother, it was creepy. Things culminated to a head when we made up a bed with clean sheets - heaven forbid. Apparently Theda was hurt that we used sheets that were of "personal value" to her (though they were in the linen closet of a guest room), and she was offended that we did not ask her for permission to make the bed. But, the oddness took a turn for the worse when the innkeeper, between crying and yelling about her sheets, snapped at my toddler. That was the final straw for me, and we checked into a hotel that night. Travelers to Fairport, NY: beware of Theda at the Clematis Inn. You have friendlier, cleaner, more professional options elsewhere in town.

Theda remembered us from our prior visit when we called, and was very gracious in welcoming us back! Theda had a jug of ice water with orange slices ready and waiting in our room for us, and cut short an errand run to be there to greet us. As it was previously, the room was immaculate as was the attached bathroom. Both were beautifully decorated, and the bathroom had a whole bunch of (many organic) personal care items. The linens were very luxurious and were high quality. Breakfast each morning was delicious and made from organic, fresh, and local ingredients. She specifically purchased whole milk and fresh blueberries for our 2 year old. When she found out that our 2 year old's favorite berries were blackberries, those appeared on the table the next morning for him. She was extremely kind to our son, and went out of her way to interact with him. Theda was very helpful with local directions, activities, and places to eat while we were there which was great as it was a holiday weekend and a lot was closed. I would highly recommend a stay at the Clematis Inn!

I got in around 8 on Thursday evening, and managed to get the last parking spot in the (rather small) lot. There was a lot going on in the lobby, there were a lot of people in the bar area and it was pretty loud - I think there was a large group staying there, and the desk worker was pretty frazzled. My guy had booked me a top floor corner room, and I was pretty happy about that, as the group and noise spilled all over. The gym in this hotel was pretty great - 4 ellipticals and 4 treadmills, 2 sets of weights, benches, and a cable machine, in a room next to the pool. The room was not bad - pretty big, and mostly clean, though there was definitely something spilled down the bedskirt that hadn't been cleaned or changed. There were wall hooks by the door and by the shower, which was a nice surprise, and I really liked the shower - the controls were by the door so you don't get sprayed in the face with cold water while you're trying to turn it on. Breakfast was also crowded, but standard for the Hampton Inn. I had a bagel and went back to the fitness area.

There just happened to be a total water outage at the hotel but got fixed pretty quickly within 1-2 hours. The rooms are on the small side but the building is new. We did have a broken conditioner bottle in that it had fallen off the wall but seems like they knew about it. Also, the phone line wasn't working properly but we didn't really use the phone so just informed front desk so they could fix for future. Cleaning of rooms seemed okay - not sure the vacuumed well and they never refilled the conditioner even though we asked. The location is amazing if you're planning to visit the Strong museum. Free parking, free breakfast and the museum is literally steps away. The breakfast was okay. Eggs, sausage, potatoes, boxed cereal, waffle, orange and apples, coffee, milk, juice, assortment of breads/bagrls/muffins. It was standard fare but nothing incredible. Overall, the location, free parking are absolutely perfect for visiting the strong museum. The breakfast is a nice bonus though not the most interesting or impressive.
