This site is across the parking lot from the Manatee Observation and Education Center in Ft. Pierce. So, after finishing at the Manatee Center we made the mandatory pilgrimage across the parking lot in search of more travel literature. As visitor centers go, this one was clean, bright and staffed by a couple of very pleasant and helpful ladies. It was a bit light in the area of available travel related literature. Still worth the stop.

It is also known as the Sunrise City, sister to San Francisco, California, the Sunset City. When I lived in South Florida for Forty Years I really loved to drive up the coast to Fort Pierce. I spent many days getting there early before Sunrise and swimming and surfing at the beach. I'd always pack up the truck with a cooler full of food and drinks. I've got pleasant memories of a clean place to live. I'd definitely consider living here if I intended to move back to Florida. I like the current demographics. Fort Pierce is not a party atmosphere like the South Florida Gold Coast. It was a getaway to me. I'm recommending you visit.

Hatcher also designed the historic Sunrise theater in downtown Ft. Pierce. The town hall was constructed in 1925 at the height of at the Florida land boom by builder C.E. Cahow. This building was used as the Fort Pierce City Hall until 1983 when a new larger and more modern town hall was built next to it. This building was the first one in the downtown to be restored. Work on it was completed in 1995 at a cost of $500,000. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on December 7, 2001. Today the second floor is available to be rented for private events.

The background stories of the chimps before their new life at the sanctuary are heartbreaking, but the great new "retirement" life this organization provides helps to make those bad memories give way to all of the happy new ones.
