Our group of four stopped by this highly-recommended bistro for dessert late this past Saturday evening after a nice & very satisfying dinner at The Pearl. Looking through the menu as a first-time costumer, my eyes popped at the list of mouth-watering choices to indulge in. We wanted to order one waffle each but since it was late in the day, they only had enough batter for two. This was fine with us since we weren't hungry anyway; we just wanted to end our evening on a high (high caloric?) note. We decided to share the two extremes: the Gaufre de Liege, a "plain" waffle that was anything but plain in its crispy/chewy goodness and the aptly named King Leopold, the ultimate paradigm of waffle excellence. Topped with a savory Dutch butter cookie spread, creamy premium Belgian chocolate sauce, and guiltless fresh strawberries, it was a treat for a foodie's senses. Two huge dollops of homemade whipped cream enhanced its visual & ambrosial appeal. As a "dessert" to our dessert, we also shared one of their scrumptious palm-sized chocolate chip cookies. Let me just say that everything lived up to the hype. We savored every morsel, and each bite was better than the last. We left, rubbing our tummies in gastronomic nirvana but only after we ordered some chocolate mousse, creme brulee, cheesecake, and chicken soup to go. Side Note #1: Since we were the last customers, we had a chance to chat with Steve, one of the proprietors of the establishment, as they were cleaning up. He shared that they've been in the business for several years and that they used to be downtown where customer traffic was heavier and parking was a nightmare. As with most small businesses, Covid sent them sailing through rough waters, but they managed to survive and moved to this new location 18 months ago. Side Note#2: As we were about to leave, we saw Steve heading to the front door with a whole rotisserie chicken in his hand. We soon learned that he has been feeding a couple of stray cats who come to the door each night at closing time, waiting for their meal. One of them just had a litter that she hides in the bushes so she goes back and forth to bring them some food. Steve even shredded the meat into smaller pieces to make it easier for the little ones. I showed up at 1:30 on Saturday, there was only one couple there, eating their meal. My husband and I were excited to try a new lunch spot. There was a man behind the counter decorating a dessert; he never turned our way or acknowledged us. After a minute or two a young lady came out of the back with a spray bottle, ready to clean a table. We said 'hi' to her and my husband joked about the size of the cookies there ( they are big and looked yummy). She averted her eyes, cleaned the table and went back. These waffles are SO good! I'm so glad we stopped in here while visiting the alamo. Belgian Sweets serves "Liege-style" waffles which are made from a complex brioche-style dough leavened with yeast, and lightly caramelized with a special sugar called pearl sugar. The light caramalization of the waffle was what made this go from an average belgian waffle to over the top delicious. We arrived at this shop right when it opened on a Saturday and it maybe took 8 minutes for us to get our waffle. The entire shop smells like waffle batter so prepare to get instantly hungry when you enter. We got the belgian waffle with whipped cream and strawberries which was devoured in about 3 minutes. This place is our all time favorite dessert place for waffles. I'm military and lived many years in Germany and Belgium, in addition to living in Las Vegas and New York City.... Love this place! The ginger lemonade is made on a daily basis and it's so refreshing. The quiche was not like the American crust. It was light and the filling to die for. Delicious food and great low key service. They're not in your face but are ready to help if you need something. I wanted to add meat to a sandwich that doesn't usually come with it and the nice woman taking our order helped ring it in the best & cheapest way. This past weekend I had the pleasure of enjoying one of the most exquisite desserts here at Belgian Sweets. The Belgian waffle with whipped cream was unbelievably simple but so deliciously flavorful. You can try it with a variety of options though. I chose plain because it was my first time here. The waffle itself was perfectly crisp and chewy! Loved how the butter and sugar caramelized from the iron and the whipped cream had a rich dairy taste. Everything there looked decadent. I also took the Maton to-go. I followed the ladies instructions and heated it for 30 seconds at home. It was marvelous! The ingredients used to make these sweet treats standout from others I've I had prior. I hadn't visited this place since it was downtown, which was years ago. So when I saw it was open on Huebner, I immediately stopped by. The owner was so nice and even remembered one of the chocolates I used to order at the old location. This place is really a gem. I haven't tried their savory dishes because I've always come for dessert, but I can attest to the deliciousness of the sweets! The listed menu items are good at a fair price. Just don't order the lasagna or any other non menu item. I bought a slice of lasagna and it was about $20 with tax included. I was so shocked. My husband put his card in to pay so fast. If he had slowed down, I would have taken it off our order. Be very wary of the items they sell that don't have the price listed. The owner responded back with that the prices on non menu items are quoted upfront, which wasn't our case. If it had been, we would have not bought the lasagna. The owner also mentioned spending beyond our comfort. We don't mind paying a lot for good food. The lasagna was mediocre at best & being sold at starting seafood prices. In addition, it really wasn't very good. We fed some of it to our dog because we didn't want anymore. This had nothing to do with our comfort and all about what was presented at it's ridiculous price. The benefit of yelp reviews is that it allows people to share their experiences with others about a place. If we had only bought menu items, which have the prices listed, we wouldn't have had a bad experience. It's great that the owner responded but, I don't appreciate the feedback as some of what they said wasn't true. There's a hidden European treasure in San Antonio. Originally located downtown, they recently relocated (during COVID!) near the Churchill area on Huebner. Oh my goodness! Over the years I've gone numerous times to both locations at this point and they have never failed me with their awesome foods and desserts. Quiche? Yes! BELGIAN waffles? Yes! Cheesecake? Yes! Creme Brûlée? Yes! Outstanding, each and every one of them. You must try the Belgian waffles to know what I'm talking about. There's nothing comparable here in the States. If you 'like' their Facebook page then you'll know when they've made their limited, special tartellette aux framboises desserts (raspberry tarts with homemade custard/pastry cream). So very good! So it's been sometime since I stumbled upon this place and when I'm lucky enough to be downtown without a time crunch hovering I enjoy strolling by to make sure they're still here. And we'll, then I go inside obviously. To start: the tables are wiped down regularly, the floors are never sticky or littered with food, and the bathroom doesn't even rank on my top 20 list of "gross, no it's okay I think I can hold it". The prices have increased as the years go by, a plain waffle now costs the $7 my #6 strawberry combo use to. For a flavor combo waffle these days you'll average $10 plus tax. It's Still delicious and as always piled high with strawberries and the house made whip cream. (To die for.) Even though I come in randomly, at infrequent intervals, the owner always gives me my order as I asked for it the first time, with extra high whip cream piles. Now I'm sure he does this for everyone but to me it feels like a little bit extra as he passes off the plate with a remark about my consistency of ordering the same thing every visit since my first. :) Teehee. What can I say, creature of habit. The second bathroom is now reserved for employees only so guests make sure you ask for the code when placing your order. Trash cans are by the restroom at the back. My visit today proved the music is still good but loud as I remember. As I'm usually by myself this never bothers me but I see others struggle to communicate through the noise. Another change I see, no more outside tables! Guess one too many people being inconsiderate towards another's property? The chocolates are still in the same glass case, though I'd recommend a check and replacement of the cracked plates as it gives a better impression to first time visitors. Guys, I tried the coffee! Lol mission complete, only took me a few years for a total experience. I got the iced coffee, which as this place only serves espresso shots it's technically an Americano. It was strong but very acidic, which I'm sensitive to. Thankfully I'm also a smart cookie and used a dollop of the amazing house whip to mix in my beverage for what I consider a perfect coffee to accompany such a sweet food item. If you prefer something not to bitter or acidic you should request a cafe latte or the more mellow shots to be used in your drink. For me, I'm use to the strength of Turkish coffee so as long as it's a little sweet I'm good to go. I will say I appreciate the owner putting up the sign about watching your young children to prevent damage to the furniture but I think that considering it's right above a sofa that most people regularly sit in and block it might be best to move it somewhere more easily seen as people walk in. Today they have a special pastry not normally made so I'm glad the owner told me about it so I can photograph it for you guys! Except as I finished my food someone grabbed it up. Sad Panda. I'll agree with my fellow yelpers, the prices of items are high but seriously guys, overhead! It costs money to be in such a prime spot around the corner from the Alamo! For the consumer based cost of the items I feel it's fair that they charge $3 more than a plain waffle costs to include half a plate of strawberries and whip cream. The amount of strawberries alone is likely half a pound or more ($3lb at HEB). Soo...I'm not mad. Lol I do wish they could do half sized portion of the waffle. I get about 3/4 through and feel like I can't possibly eat another bite. But then I look at the food, think of the waste, and find a way (oh how hard it is!) to push through and finish. My taste buds never regret it, my stomach however, sometimes hates me. On my con list this visit was the sheer smokiness to the air today, it was a bit too strong to handle at times and just when I thought I'd have to go outside for fresh air the AC kicked in. A notable haze in the air and lot of sneezing later did make me wish they still had an outdoor table as an option. Otherwise only other things I can be whiny about, and mind you this is me just being nitpicky, I do see some areas where cleaning and dusting could be done a little more regularly. But I'm an OCD former maid, who has also worked in the medical field, so my standards are quite a bit higher than your average Joe and I noticed things most people don't even see when they're staring straight at it. read more

My husband and kids were very excited to try. I know things are tough for businesses these days, and we are ready to support and patronize, but this was very disappointing Updated - beware everyone who dares write a review that is anything less than sparkling for this business. How can you operate a waffle shop without any waffles??? I can go back and forth forever, but my review stands - if you have operating hours and claim to specialize in Belgian waffles, I suggest you have some prepared. The fact that you, the owner, had time to write a lengthy reply to a review that simply states - no waffles available - means that you do in fact have plenty of time to cook some. The waffles themselves are not American style, so be weary it may not be what you are used to. We ordered the nutella with bananas and the apple crisp. The nutella was good, very simple and delicious. The more over the top was the apple crisp; basically the filling of an apple pie atop a waffle with a side of ice cream. Super sweet and very good! This place is absolutely fantastic. It's relaxing and the staff are so sweet and attentive. I had come in this a craving for a Croque Monsieur and what I got exceeded my expectations, the pesto sauce it was served with was heavenly. I had also gotten the ginger lemonade, and as someone who is not to keen on ginger, it was so amazing a new drink I'm absolutely in love with as its refreshing and comforting. I missed this place so much. So glad they're back and at a more accessible location. Dine in is open in COVID. Masks as usual with physical distancing. I don't eat sweets often for health reasons. But when I do, this place is my top choice. Some foods are worth eating slowly; the flavor changes as the food settles in mouth, and to swallow too quickly is to miss out on good experience. The experience I get from this place is always top notch, so I like to take my time when I get to eat here. I love the waffles, sweet cream, and speculoos. It was my birthday and wanted to eat somewhere with great dessert! This completely fit the bill. I had the Brie, onion, bacon quiche and shared the tomato soup with my daughter.
