Jonny Q.

I popped into Belgian Bar after an event I was running in Alti and have to say that I really enjoyed the experience - it really reminded me of some of the rough around the edges, but homely and relaxing ale bars I hit when holidaying in Amsterdam (I do know Belgium and Netherlands are different countries... ;-) ) I'd booked out the upstairs for our do (took 35 easily over over 2 floors) and then stayed for a couple of beers afterwards. The on pump selection of beers was fantastic and there were loads of options of beers that I would usually probably bypass in favour of the American/British craft beer scene - this meant I had to try something new and I did, thoroughly enjoying the Blonde beer I supped (followed by some fantastic German lager) Friendly staff, a roaring fire and a really lovely homely feel (a real mix of patrons, including peeps with buggies) - I'll definitely be going back next time I'm in town.

Owned by both Landlady and Landlord, they do their best to make you feel welcome. There's often a strange mix of clientele, from the very young to the very old, but everyone appears to be having a grand old time all the same. For sports lovers, there's the informal sports bar upstairs with screens, but be sure to get there early to nab a leather sofa. The Orange Tree has a great selection of draught beers as well as real ales, and the food hearty and includes a very pocket-friendly daily special including pie day, fish and chip day and steak day, all under £5!

It's one of those pubs that has obviously been lovingly cared and built on for a number of years. The food is good old fashioned pub grub like home made steak and ale pie, rump steaks, baguettes and a good selection of salads. They even have a resident ghost! who has been the subject of interest for ghost hunters, regulars and visitors alike..... Apparently he is a monk who likes chanting! They have a small beer garden to the rear, there is also seating out the front facing out onto Altrincham old market square, most of the buildings here are some of the oldest in the town. There is also a sports bar inside where they show all sports .. you name it, they probably will air it. A peaceful, privately owned and traditional pub!

I didn't get to try the food or even see the menu but there's an impressive looking kitchen so hope to return for that at some point (actually have now found menu online and as well as a grill they have a big sushi menu!!) Drinks wise, they had Antica Formula vermouth! The bartender had NO IDEA what it was or how to serve it but we quickly got the ice/lemon/appropriate glass sorted and although it might seem expensive at £4.50 for 50ml it's a good alternative to wine for an aperitif. Prosecco was £22 a bottle which wasn't bad either. I thought the ale selection was a little limited although and I couldn't work out what the microbrewery aspect was (curiously they only seem to have a wine menu even though they have an extensive amount of fancy sprits which you can't see properly). As the evening (Saturday) wore on it became increasingly busy and uncomfortable to sit at the bar with people bashing past you to get their order - they probably need to move some of those chairs on busy nights (/you might want to try another option - amazingly the market was actually quieter by that point!).

The exterior and some of the interior is a little faded and shabby, but that could be said to add to its olde worlde charm (if we are kind, and the staff were so friendly that I'm feeling kind). I had a splendid English breakfast, which they serve all day. The Full Monty: 2 eggs, bacon, 2 Cumberland sausages, 2 big slices of black pudding (prize Bury black pudding!), mushrooms, stewed tomatoes, and baked beans, with a side of toast. The perfect meal to help you recover from the hangover from drinking all their real ales. It was delicious and very filling. (Unfortunately my phone died just as I was about to snap a shot of this formidable meal.) It's a big space with darts and a pool table. Plus they have live music, usually blues or rock, on Friday and Saturday night, starting around 9. Back in the day, I went to some rollicking gigs here and I'm glad to see they're still going strong. Their staff are a credit to them, welcoming and enthusiastic (but not overly so). It was a great touch that they were all decked out in clothing of the period, all braces and flat caps - reminded me of characters from Bugsy Malone. Their extensive cocktail menu has something for everyone* and reading through the list will no doubt leave you perplexed about what to order first. It was an exciting initial visit - we hadn't finished our first drink before deciding we'd come back asap. * of legal age to drink! Speaking of drinks, the staff made some recommendations and kindly offered to bring them over to where we we seating (we'd nabbed a table tucked away in what I'd describe as a snug). After only a few minutes our drinks arrived and they looked great, the glasses looked the business and what was inside them really gorgeous. I first had a South Side (reportedly Al Capone's drink of choice) and it was refreshing. Next I tried their Old Fashioned - I'm trying to get a taste for whisky - and it was a tasty, slow drink. Perfect. As I've written, we'll be definitely going back here and trying out more of their drinks. The service and attention to detail are of the highest order, even for a bar that was very busy.
