A word of warning: this place is very small and low on staff. Even if you turn up at lunchtime, you should expect a wait to be seated and to be served, but our party of 5 was allowed to sit at the dedicated tea service table until a meal table became available.
Anyway; we started out with Honey and Lemon Iced Tea. I couldn't pinpoint the exact type of tea used, but it was something slightly floral, definitely not your average powder mix. After we asked, they told us that only the first refill is free. After that it's another $3, which is fair enough I suppose; I've worked in restaurants before moving here, and when your product is as high quality as this, the profit margin per glass has got to be a lot narrower.
Onto the appetisers. Not everyone was so adventurous as to try something authentic, but our friend's Egg Drop Soup "had a kick to it", and while the Crab Puffs were a no-go (very sweet, more like a dessert item) the Golden Gate Shrimp was as good as other reviews have stated. The deep-fried prawns are sweet and fresh, and come with a creamy sauce that seems to contain tobiko (the orange fish eggs you get on sushi). None of us had ever had anything like it before. My Spinach Dumplings arrived with the entrees due to their steaming time - the spinach inside wasn't soggy and was subtly flavored with garlic, something that would easily win over my vegetarian friends, but they didn't really have me craving more. Next time we might order the Hot Oil Dumplings or something else 'meaty' and see how they fare.
As for the entrees, since there were five of us we each ordered something different. Dishes here are served by-the-portion with a bowl of rice, rather than family-style, but portions are generous even if the ingredient ratios are hit-and-miss. My husband's French-style steak had plenty of beef, but a friend who ordered the Far Eastern Special (a noodle dish) had only two shrimp in the whole dish. Nonetheless; it's rare to find a Chinese restaurant that seems to cater to all tastes equally well, as our less adventurous friends thoroughly enjoyed their General's Chicken and Walnut Shrimp (an off-menu order), and I found the Twice-Cooked Pork and Taro even better than expected. After reassuring the owner (who explained it was made with pork belly and might be too fatty for some tastes - very considerate) I was presented with thinly-sliced, melt-in-the-mouth strips of pork with a subtle taste of five spice, with chunks of white, starchy taro absorbing the flavor of the sauce and the smoke of the hot wok.
Reasonably priced. Excellent quality. Overall, highly recommended. Our friends who live locally have taken take-out/delivery menus home, and though we live 25 minutes away we can't wait to come back. read more
