I'll be honest, I've had good tasting food as well as bad at Beef-A-Roo. The burgers are dried out and not very fresh tasting. The roast beef sandwiches are fantastic! The pork tenderloin sandwiches are not what I'd call pork tenderloin at all, but, rather some frozen processed, meat product, which is horrible by the way. Their hot dogs, shakes, and fries are good, but nothing special. All of the different Beef-A-Roo's that I've been to are decorated differently, which I think is cool. One is like a 50's diner, one is like a firehouse, one is like a warehouse and one is kind of upscale looking. I'm not sure what the others are. All of the one's I've been to have been very clean and the service was great. I'd only have one thing to say to the owners: Work on your menu. Either perfect what's on it, or change some things to some better things. read more

Just had some very stale and salty cheese fries. My daughter had the same she wouldn't eat them. The buffalo wrap was a mess. The only good part was the onion rings. When it takes 12 minutes in the drive up, with only one other car at 6 o'clock, I think it should all be very fresh. Very disappointed with this trip. read more

I went to Beef-A-Roo a few days ago with my g/f to finally check this establishment out due to being an "out of towner". The restaurant itself looks really nice inside and out! However, do not let this fool you. The food is awful. I had a bacon cheeseburger with sweet potato fries and a regular drink. I took three bites out of it and tossed it. Two friends from Rockford highly recommended Beefaroo so we thought we'd check it out. I ordered the carolina bbq sandwich and a jamocha shake. The sandwich was dry as a desert so I sent it back and got a cheeseburger which tasted like a McDonald's burger. Yuck. If I want McDonald's I'll go eat there. Took my order to go as I needed to hit the road, but I always try and hit this place when I am in town or passing through. What a great local chain. It is better than Burger King or McDonalds, and it reminds me of Arbys. I didn't really care for the cheese fries, which other people seem to like a lot. I used to drive through there for work to visit one of our locations and I couldn't see how I could spend money or invest here. For a fast-food type restaurant, we were very happy with the good & atmosphere. We were passing through Rockford looking for a dog-friendly patio so we didn't leave the dog in the car on a hot summer day. We found the workers friendly & efficient, the Big Beef was delicious & tasted more like home-roasted beef than a place like Arbys. Burger was good, toppings fresh, prices appropriate. Building was clean, bathrooms needed updated, but the landscaping & patio were nicer than any fast food restaurant I've been to. Overall, we'd come again & would recommend! read more

I wander in to Beefaroo after jumping off the bus. I was headed to the Library to work on a presentation. I knew I was going to require something healthy to eat to nourish my overworked brain. Unfortunately, East State Street is a pocked with unhealthy fast food (fast death) establishments. But tucked away just off off the main highway is a Rockford Icon. BEEFAROO. I love this place. I don't eat here too often because I often cook but when I want a quick bite that is not so deadly I will wander in. Today, I was greeted by DONNA, I asked her what is your healthiest offering? I didn't even bother looking at the menu - I wanted her advice. Without hesitation she describe a few offerings including their KALE SALAD... I stopped her when she got to Avocado. She suggested the Balsamic Dressing. I asked her the cost and she replied $8. I hesitated for a nano-second and said fine. That's a good investment for my main meal of the day. I had a water with my salad. The salad was nicely presented. Dense. It includes Sunflower seeds, Avocado, Dates, Grape Tomatoes, and Grilled Chicken. Kale is a dark green veggie. It's dense and is related to Broccoli. I found it quiet satisfying. I asked Donna for a different kind of dressing as this robust flavor I felt was better accompanied by a sweet or citrusy dressing. She offered me a raspberry dressing which was perfect! Donna was on top of her customer service game. Paige showed up with her illuminating smile. I asked her why the big smile. She replied I am happy. She added she like Beefaroo because it's a cool place to work with cool people. Her smile says a lot about the environment. Blech! The roast beef is NOTHING like it was when they opened. This place is over priced and underwhelming. While they seem to support the local area it really only seems like the owners are supporting their charities and nothing more. When the best thing is a frozen french fry that is nothing that any other restaurant can't get and seasoned salt (uhhhh look on your grocery shelved people!) covered in processed nasty cheese sauce I think that the restaurant as a whole is not good. I have been eating Beef-a-Roo's double cheeseburgers since they opened in 1967 and bragged them up as the best around.....HOWEVER....a little over a year ago they changed the bun to a pretzel-like bread and it changed the entire taste of the burger. I was told to order it with the JUNIOR bun, but it is nothing like the old sesame seed bun of old. Then, I noticed a distinct change in the flavor of the sauce and mentioned it to the district manager who swore it had not been changed...I BEG TO DIFFER!!.... because it was not just my taste buds but my partner also noticed the big difference and she is not as long a Beef-a-Roo connoisseur as I am. Then this past Sunday I decided to try it again and this time the beef patties were terrible, mushy, not beefy at all, very little lettuce, no tomato, one pickle slice, a horrible white sauce, and excessive ketchup. Also, I have always considered their onion rings to be in top competition with Uncle Nick's, but this time they were very greasy and I believe they were an old order double-dipped in hot oil. I had already driven home so I just ate what I could stomach and gave the rest to my dogs. I gave this a 3 star rating because they redeem their selves with their summer berry salad and a few other items on their menu. But the double cheeseburger and onion rings has always been my staple for 50 years. But now they have lost 2 customers...unless we get a craving for a quick salad. Too bad because I will be going to 5 Guys or 15th and Chris for my next gourmet burger because Beef-a-Roo can no longer compete in the area they were famous for. read more

Fast Food does have its place, and that place is here, at Beef-A-Roo. I recently went Gluten-Free (out of necessity believe me.) And have trouble at times finding fast food I can eat. But I explained to Corinne, the manager that I wanted Gluten-Free fries, and she was extremely accommodating, helpful and all around wonderful about it. What I like about Beef-A-Roo, while they are fast food, they have a lot of menu choices. There are numerous items for all sorts of dietary restrictions, and willing and eager to modify menu items for a customers needs. I often get the Santa Fe Chicken Salad with extra Salsa instead of Salad Dressing. It is very good, especially for a fast food restaurant. Fast food in Rockford, this is the place to go. read more

So I'm on a little vacation looking for something to eat, I check Yelp of course, and I find Beef-A-Roo. So I ask my GF was the heck is a Beef-A-Roo? We both have no idea, but it has 5 stars on Yelp and a funny name, so what the heck. Beef-A-Roo sounds like it has some local cult followings, so I hope I don't piss anyone off with this. To an outsider Beer-A-Roo is like if Arby's, some Chicago Vienna beef place and a hamburger joint had a bastard child. I got the Philly Beef and a Chicago dog. The Philly beef was good, I wish it had some sort of tasty sauce on it though, plus it came on a bun not a roll, so that was odd. The Chicago dog was good too, but how does "everything" not include mustard? I ate some of my GF's fries and they were tasty, I'd like to take the Pepsi challenge with that and McDonalds fries sometime. I wanted to put some salt on them, but all the salt in the shakers looked dirty?? Maybe it was some pepper mixture, but I wasn't going to risk it. So I'd give it a 5 star, but just some odd quirks about it gets me to a 4 star and maybe it is just because I'm an outsider. read more

Favorite fast food for locals. Prices are higher than a normal chain but so is the quality. Food cooked to order, not sitting under a heater to kept warm.
