Also had bacon and some excellent onion rings on it. Also tried my son's hamburger. It was very, very good, had a thick caramelized crust on it from the grill. Very flavorful. I have been a die hard Beef a Roo fan since I was little but this trip back home to my favorite restaurant left me feeling unfulfilled. My all time favorite is the pork tenderloin sandwich and cheddar fries. The sandwich had about 10 pickles on it and it tasted terrible, nothing at all like it used to be. The fries were fresh but had very little of the signature salt on them. The extra charge for cheese was 70 cents and the little dollop I got wasn't even enough to qualify them as cheese fries. The cashier didn't seem interested in my order and kept asking me to repeat myself. The interior is remodeled and they have a gas fireplace. I'm sad to say I probably won't make it a point to stop here when I'm in town. read more

Basically the Culver's of the Rockford area. Very similar menu and vibes, but also same quality. I got the chicken tenders and the cheese curds. I definitely recommend the curds, since they use cheese from nearby Wisconsin. Tenders were also surprisingly good, my friend had said they're her favorite and I can see why. There's plenty locations in the area, the one I went to was right off the highway, like a few blocks from I-90. For something fast, but higher quality than McDonald's/BK, this is a place to check out. read more

They have yummy shakes, sandwiches and even stuffed baked potatoes! I stopped and got a summer salad and a bacon cheddar potato. A bed of lettuce with corn, black beans, green peppers, pico de Gallo and tortilla strips. The highlight of meals is their garden veggie burger. The burger is big and comes with all the fixings; it's filling! The cheese fries are not what they used to be; nowadays the cheese tastes more like the processed cheese you might find at a hockey game. But, if that's your liking, then it's up your alley! I also had a Jamoca monster shake, which was sooooo sweet! Make sure you bring a friend to share it with, because they're huge! The toppings of donut holes and cinnamon roll were definitely store bought and a little stale; the only good part was the biscotti, which was still so sweet. This is my happy place. Me, my fiance and my best friend have a tradition that every time he's home from L.A. we eat here before we drop him off to go to Chicago for his flight. It is THE best fast food in the world. Ever. The Roast Beef is my world. The cheese fries (mind you I don't even like cheese fries - except at Beef-a-Roo) are magnificent. The Roast beef was really good but I had a weird experience. I came with my two friends we each ordered separately and I told the girl it's for here and she said that I can come up to pick up my own food when they call my number. I said ok but my two friends did get table number so I asked her again and she said yes come pick up your own food when I call your number. My friends asked me why the hell I was hanging out in Rockford. Because Cheddar Fries. End review. Obviously, just kidding. It might kill me to write a review any less than 4,000 characters... and I actually think I'd responded, 'Because Adventure.' But Cheddar Fries and Adventure go hand-in-hand so I think the one explanation begets the other. Truth: The best part of my weekend was my visit to Beef-A-Roo. I think I told everyone I saw that I got to go here. There may even have been a few texts sent in honor of eating here. It's been several years since I've had legit fast food so I was instructed to get the Cheddar Fries, as apparently that's one of *the* things to do here, and that advice could not have been more spot on. I got a large because my company told me to get a small, and I can only take so much instruction at a time. At first I was a tad disappoint when I only saw what looked like a small-ish glob of cheese on top of a cup filled with fries, but then I realized that the entire core of the cup was full of cheese, all the way down to the bottom, so I didn't get bamboozled like when you go to the movie theater and they only only put the butter squirt on the top later... which is total bullsh*t. The goodness didn't stop with the gelatinous cheddar core (the most American kind of core there is). I turned around to see a condiment station and fountain soda bar that had complimentary sliced jalapenos! I piled those bad boys into a paper cup, grabbed a packet of Beef-A-Roo's horseradish sauce and barbecue sauce and sat my ass down... oh, and I got a salad but I know that's the least of anyone's interest, so I'll save that for later. This place is immaculately clean and features art from local artists. The inside, which I was told got a makeover is surprisingly swanky with oversized black pleather booths, brick fireplaces (inside and on patio out front - ooh la la) and dimly lit for mood, not so dark that you can't see everything, but just enough so you'll look a little better than you probably do in normal, outside of Beef-A-Roo life. They have a new 'skinny menu' with some fairly artisan-type offerings that are low on calories. I still recommend you get a large cheddar fry to go with whatever you order though. I love beets so I ordered the beet salad with really fresh tasting REAL Gorgonzola cheese. I felt like my fries and salad were a bit pricey at $9 and some change, but I managed to get full even while splitting the salad with one of my dining partners. The salad came with beets, spinach, thin orange slices, craisins and a balsamic vinaigrette dressing packet that I used sparsely, as the salad was good enough without. It didn't feel like a fast food item at all, in the best possible way. They sealed the 5-Star deal with super friendly, clean cut service that ended with a young man walking around to each table close to the end of our meal, offering us either a small mint or chocolate. "I'll take the Andes minty chocolate please." ... as my company had to pry me from the booth, not wanting to leave the confines of a magical place called Beef-A-Roo. read more

They also have a number of seating options--booths, high-tops and lounge style with low tables. They also have outdoor seating with a fireplace. Definitely worth selecting for upscale faster food if you are in the area. Not that fantastic to merit a special trip from out-of-town. But definitely worth getting off the Interstate for around meal-time. The lowbrow name belies its casual upscale nature. Fills this niche very well and I can't think of another place like it. I've been to a couple Roos around the Rockford area, but this one more than others. This place reminds me of an upscale Arby's, which will probably get me killed by my girlfriend. They carry roast beef sandwiches, along with deli sandwiches, salads, and wraps. The fries here are top notch fast food fries, and definitely helped by the celery salt they offer. I also like how they bring you an Andes mint to you after your meal. It's worth going around town as every Beef-A-Roo is themed differently. This one is more of a modern brick building, but just up the street you can find a large wood cabin Beef-A-Roo. My only complaint is that the menus are pretty non-descript. I find myself always asking what certain things are, and last time my girlfriend thought she was ordering her favorite item, but they had changed it on her and she was pretty disappointed. Again, save your money. Stopped at the drive through and ordered a Pork Tenderloin sandwich and fries. By the time I got home, (5 minutes) both were ice cold. I had to microwave both before I can fit the grease in my mouth. As I was eating the Pork Tenderloin sandwich, I noticed that it's not a Port Tenderloin sandwich at all. It's a ground pork patty with filler. I was expecting (as in a few cases in the past) a thin slice of port, breaded, and deep fried. Not this one. It was a ground pork patty that was microwaved hours earlier before adding it to my sandwich. And as I mentioned, my food was cold. I was there on 9/8/2022 I ordered a chicken sandwich and onion ring and a drink almost 13.00 dollars I would have been ok with paying that amount but the food was absolutely horrible the chicken sandwich had 4 pieces of lettuce on it and it was so over cooked i couldn't Even bite it mayo on one side of bread? The onion ring were cool and super super greasy I took a bite and the grease ran downy hand! It was so bad I wond up throwing it away! The staff was great! I actually asked for a Diet Pepsi, but with these masks it's difficult to hear and the cashier told the other woman to get a "Pepsi." I kindly moved up after I paid and said "I wanted a Diet Pepsi, but she couldn't hear me." She politely acknowledged, smiled and got me the drink. I thought how refreshing, no eye roll, haha. What has happened to Beef-A-Roo. Just got chicken strips, fries and iced tea. Chicken strips were so hard and dry out of 5 strips I could barely eat 2 of them . The fries were also very overcooked.
