I hate that this is my first negative review, especially after being a loyal customer of Bed-Stuy Fish Fry for over 10 years. I've always returned because the food has been consistent and good--until today. Thankfully, I keep photos of my food. The first picture shows what the whiting is supposed to look and taste like. The second picture, the whiting sandwich I received today, was completely different. It tasted like cheap, frozen fish you'd buy from Jetros--the kind that's been frozen, defrosted, and refrozen. It was soggy, dry, and lacked the fresh flavor Bed-Stuy Fish Fry is known for. I was physically in the store and ordered a whiting dinner through the Uber app to take advantage of the buy-one-get-one-free deal. Because I enjoy the whiting so much, I also ordered a whiting sandwich. Unfortunately, this was the worst whiting I've ever had. When I called the store, I was told I was the only person who complained today. That still doesn't answer the real issue: why wasn't I told the whiting had been replaced or was different from your usual fish? If the quality changes, customers deserve to know before spending their money. I'm extremely disappointed and frustrated. This place truely deserves an award. The food is amazing here. BOGO specials are everything here. You get good value for your money for sure. The ambiance is lots of music and a large crowd of hungry people and impatient uber/seamless people picking up food for delivery. It is what it is. This is a takeout place so if you want to try it pick up to go home or do delivery only! If you are picking it up understand that there will be a large crowd of people waiting because the food is really that good. I would wait on this line 100x over to eat the food that's how good it is. The sides are flavorful and the meals are wonderful. I highly recommend this place if you are in the mood for seafood and have some patience to deal with a crowd. Here's an update on yet another BOGO deal. I ordered their crab cakes like I said I would. I'm going to leave ALL my thoughts and hopefully their management sees them, along with other reviews that mimic the same sentiments-- and maybe they'll make improvements. I like to start with "cons" just so I can end on a positive note. The one major complaint I've seen across the board is the lack of consistency. Not only do I agree but it also goes hand in hand with one of my biggest complaints which is the overall lack of customer service and it puts a damper on everything else. Sometimes, you get a platter that looks and tastes really good. Other days, you might get a platter with raw baked chicken (true story). Then there are days where the food looks crazy but tastes amazing. I don't blame the employees entirely because they're not training themselves. Ever since they implemented the BOGO deals on Ubereats, their wait times have almost tripled & their prices have raised--while the quality of their food/experience hasn't improved. It's very obvious that they cant keep up with the volume of orders AND do so in a timely manner, while maintaining a certain level of integrity with the food theyre serving. The last two times I ordered, my delivery drivers were waiting over 30 minutes for my food. They literally get packed with food couriers, there are videos that show how crazy it gets. You can't help but feel bad for the workers. This is why I lowkey hoped that with their new success, they wouldn't just open a bunch of random locations in other boroughs but actually expand and improve the locations they already had here. I'll be very honest about the fact that I LOATHE eating $30+ meals in plastic cafeteria containers. It gives cheap and lazy. Why not invest in better plating options? Seating? More space? I mean, cmon. Clearly, they have someone coming up with recipes/ideas that could actually compete against actual fine dining restaurants and it just feels like they're not only selling themselves short, but their patrons as well. I get that it's easier to keep things low maintenance/casual but I just know that they would do a lot better if they revamped their most popular locations to be a tad more upscale. Idk about yall, but I would for sure love a refined BSFF with dine-in options. The crab cakes were really good, but lord-- the presentation of both platters was terrible. You eat with your eyes first, everyone knows this! The platter pictured was actually the better of the two because the other (with Mac and collard greens) was a mess. The BOGO makes it easier to tolerate because imagine paying $40 for a plate this messy? & remember what I said earlier about consistency? If you go on their IG, the crab cakes in those videos are huge and uniform. Mine were ALL different sizes. Some pictures on here show them burnt. Not okay. It was the same issue with the crab stuffed salmon a few weeks ago. One had more stuffing than the other & it was obvious. They should be weighing them out, but when they're up to their necks in orders & need to pump food out, they're not paying attention to stuff like that. The flavor though? ON POINT. Barely any filler, FULL of delectable lump crab. Not too salty, just right. Very similar to Maryland style crab cakes. Sides? No complaints. This is why I have such a love/hate relationship with them. I just want them to do better, the community is going to support regardless. The mobile bike delivery guys hovering at the front of the counter is annoying. I wish they had a better system for them to pick up and separate the walk in customers from them. The cashier was a brown skin young lady and the person that was preparing the food was a dark skin young lady (I'm giving a description so the owners can know). They were both VERY RUDE. Now let me say this, I get that we're in the middle of a pandemic and business structures have been severely impacted but if you choose to open you MUST make sure that the proper safety procedures are followed. To add insult to injury, of the four workers seen, only two had on masks. The first thing I noticed was how incredible close the dumpsters were to the front entrance. The store opened at 11 and when I arrived at 12 the dumpsters were already leaking a gory looking substance all over the concrete, perhaps because of the heat. However, management has a responsibility to sanitize the area. It smells horrible. There was a sign on the door stating make were required. No elements of social distancing being reinforced inside and the place was sweltering. The AC was clearly not working and the fatigued look on the workers faces told me they were feeling it. The food was displayed in clean and appealing trays that looked up to code. They were severely understaffed as there was no one manning that area. There was one lady flouring chicken, one on the register and one person who appeared to be replenishing supplies. We waited for almost 20 mins to be addressed even though there were only 4 people including my friend in the store. When we finally got to the register that's when the cashier is making an announcement that payment is via " cash only". They didn't see the benefit of posting this on the door so you don't have to waste time standing inside of you don't have cash. The order was placed: I asked for jerk chicken with 2 sides. As she closed the container I asked for jerk sauce. She said they had none. Again they opened only an he earlier. She asked if I wanted bbq sauce, nope not on JERK CHICKEN. Next, sis asks if I wanted the juice off the yams poured on the chicken. Are you guys serious? The federal government has reported only 40% of small businesses will survive the pandemic so I have been unwavering in masking sure I am ONLY spending my money with black small businesses but I still want value and a good experience.
