My first two experiences here for their brew store were good. Good help and support. Easy in and easy out. My last trip however was not the same. I Came in for a propane tank exchange which they offer as part of their home brew shop. There appeared to be only one employee working and they were serving the beer. I waited my turn in line-maybe about 10-12 minutes. My turn came up and I stated I was here for a propane tank exchange. The employee couldn't find the key and called the manager, then came back to me and said can you wait, I need to check some more places but I wanna get these people behind you served, something like that. There was 4 more people behind me, I waited another 3-5 minutes and the same people right behind me were still ordering beers. I walked out. I get it, one employee, busy but I was a customer also, I waited in line for my turn and than told to wait longer. I didn't find this right on a professional/business level. I waited, I should have had my service request met or simply say we don't have that right now, not can you wait so I can handle other customers. This implies other customers are more important. read more

We got a kegerator and needed a keg. I called Bear Roots and they suggested a bunch of beers I might like over the phone (we didn't want an IPA or sour). We arrived and enjoyed the friendly vibe. The manager listened to us and picked 4 beers that we might like, plus one out of our comfort zone for fun. We happily tasted and deliberated and decided on the Secret Garden. We were fully prepared to not buy a keg here because it'sa big commitment, but we knew we really liked their beer. The brewer overheard and said that was his favorite, too. He said he added rose petals to give it the rose color. This was funny as we had just named our backyard bar The Thorny Rose after my 8 year old daughter, Rose, who loves everything pink. She was with us, so the brewer brought over A ROSE. Is this magical or what? They had a bunch of roses as they gave a bouquet to an employee who just started that day. What a great place. They epitomize everything awesome about North County breweries. We will never forget our first keg for the Thorny Rose! read more

I'm a comedian from San Diego that's been on tour over the past couple years and I have been fortunate enough to share the stage with a few of those in the industry that I look up to and respect. It's with the utmost sincerity that I say this particular venue/brewery is one of the top five in the county. I've been to quite a few but none with the selection, atmosphere, and weekly comedy open mic of such reputable taste that's coupled with the knowledge of the art that is brewing a quality beer. When discussing with one local they said that, "this is truly one of the hidden jewels of Vista." Bear Cookie, which sounds amazing in of itself is defined as a Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout that for me taste like if Reese's went into the booze business and started making every day like childhood just with a higher alcohol content. Another of their selections on tap has a name that also describes most of my friends love for this place, aptly named Deep Rooted its 9.9 percent of awesome. Every beer they make is delicious and should be celebrated not just for the rich flavors but their names are also worth noting and more than hard to forget. If you happen in on one of the Monday open mics both your hosts Richard Provencio and Aaron Frescas are two of the most inviting yet exceedingly talented guys you could ever run into. They run a very professional mic and if you're not used to language that can be referred to as "adult" or "Rated-R" bear in mind that they do have a sign about what's going on so be ready for such things as sarcasm and irony, because that'll happen. Suffice to say if you haven't been to the one and only Bear Roots Brewing then you are doing yourself a great disservice and you should be more active in your community because you're not only missing out on a staff that is second to none but talent from all over this big beautiful country. I stopped by here this past summer after a family day at Legoland. I came in to grab a growler while my husband waited in the car with sleepy kids. The ambiance of the place is great. I definitely got good vibes as soon as I walked in. The owner let me know it would be a few minutes so I spent time looking over what I wanted to get. He asked if I had any questions and was genuine and friendly. He explained to me how they hand make every batch and the proof was in the pudding. I sampled the Bear Cookie Stout which was one of the best stouts I have ever tried. I even chatted with some locals sipping brews as I waited. I grabbed my growler and stickers and headed out. If and when I come back to Vista, I will stop in for a flight and more beer. read more

Bear Roots Brewing is a great newer brewery in Vista. With so many in the area you have to be pretty good to stand out and I think Bear Roots completely does. This is one of my new favorites. I like that the location but the parking can be a bit hard if they are busy, the parking lot is narrow. The inside has a welcoming comfortable feel with plenty of seating. The owners and employees are super nice and helpful. Most importantly the beer is excellent, the bear cookie is my favorite. They have home brewing supplies as well. read more

The beer is beyond great. They have brewing dialed in for sure. And the atmosphere is strangely enticing, as if Oaken from Frozen created a cozy urban bodega, with lumber from his Nordic cabin. It's nice. It has a strange but comforting smell, too. The whole effect is very hipster hygge and I'm here for it. read more

The shop is both a home brew store and a brewery so you can taste what they've created and make an attempt at replicating it with hops/malt/etc purchases. What I liked the most about Bear Roots is their desire to showcase the community with a home brewer competition - this leads to the winner getting their beer created on tap at Bear Roots, along with a personalized pint glass. The person working indicated this event will likely happen quarterly, which sounds pretty rad if you ask me. If you're in the area, stop in for a cold one, and don't forget to check-in on yelp! Awesome place. They have a lot of supplies and great options for Brewing at home. Lots of good ingredients. My only complaint is how much they charge me for a CO2 refill. Nearly $50 and it wasn't even halfway full. You might be better off going to a hydroponics store or Welding Supply that does CO2. Go get a refill somewhere else for 16 to $20. read more

This is on my short go to lists. Great atmosphere. It's low key and has a good vibe. Reminds me of the local bar but in a good way. The Black IPA, the Edinburgh and Bear Heart are all great. Bear Roots in an excellent addition to our local Hop Highway. I had the pleasure of experiencing their beer shortly after they opened (they didn't even have a sign up and only 2 beers on tap them) and more recently now that they're better established. The beer I had during my first visit there remains my favorite: the Scotch Ale. They also have all the supplies people need for home-brewing -- something I've never tried. But if I ever get any DIY desires (rather than simply being on the drinking end of everyone else's), I'd start here: Bear Roots allows you to use their equipment and brew under their oversight. I was very impressed by this brewery. From the outside it doesn't look like much is going on but once inside you are captivated with the large selection of home brew kits and supplies. The brewery itself is small and they have a limited amount of beers in stock but you can tell that they know their stuff. I first tried their Edinburgh Pale which had a crips taste. My second beer was their Rooted in Nelson, now I typically don't like IPAs but this one is a win! I will definitely be back for more and hope to try their Scotch Ale. Personal Goal: 10/100 read more

Awesome beer, great people, comfortable setting, close to home! A great variety of brews, considering how small they are. Not great for a huge group, or if you need some food, but great for a cozy date or a small group of friends. Their peanut butter chocolate stout tastes like a reeses peanut butter cup and, dare I say, significantly better than another local brewery's version of this. This place is really cool! I went for the very first time since they opened on a Tuesday and they had 2 IPA's on tap! One was light, crisp and refreshing and the other one was a bit bolder and hoppier which I loved! They've got a lot of good stuff in there available for purchase if you are a home Brewer or looking to get into brewing. They sell white labs yeast which is some of the best yeast you could ever use so that made my day! The owner was a really nice guy he makes all of his customers feel comfortable. He greeted everyone with a chipper upbeat smile and would walk around asking how we all were doing! I'm def looking forward to the official grand opening on December 18th he named a few beers and descriptions that will be on tap and boy was my mouth watering!!!! This is a local gem, even in a sea full of craft beer gems. I don't brew (I just like drinking the fruits of their labors)...but I still find myself stopping here rather often. We came for a Yelp event hosted by Trish and we were completely surprised by what it was. Our first impression was: Holy Crap, now that is a store front that we did not expect. Plus, parking blows, but it holds your car securely. The space seems small, but as the night wore on you could sense it filling up, but never seemed overwhelming with people. The Yelp deal was killer. I liked the service because they knew their beers and could talk about it with pretentiousness. I could explain what I like and they could just as easily tell you what to try. The home brew store was done well so it complimented the rest of the decor. The PB stout was super peanut buttery from beginning to end of the tongue. The Black IPA was clean and not hoppy at all, I am not sure if this is endemic of a Black IPA or my piss poor palate, but the beer seemed flat-ish (see me hedge my bets by saying ish). I rarely give 5 stars, but this is a great brewery. It opened in December so they are brand new on the north county brew scene. The downside was they only had two brews on tap because they are getting used to how much they need to brew for the demand. Everything else was excellent. Nick, the manager, told us why they had the limited selection and when and what kind of brews they would have in the next weeks. He also talked to us for a long time, giving the place the locally owned feel. The two beers they had were stellar-I particularly liked the raspberry sour. The homemade root beer is great as well. They also have a home brew supply store so you can get what you need to brew at home. They are going to start brew workshops soon as well. Love this place! My husband and all of his friends love the beer. I have battled with Celiac for over a decade, so I was really excited to hear that they have some housemade seltzers that are gluten free so I can drink with everyone else. To alleviate my anxiety about ordering a drink from a brewery, the bartender, MJ, brought over the brewmaster who told me how they make it from beet sugar and add real fruit to make it delicious. These people are awesome and so friendly and their drinks are so good. A small company who really pours a lot of knowledge, care and craft into the product. Highly recommend! read more
