Although there is only street parking you can generally get a close by spot. This used to be a blue collar working class neighborhood with few options. How times have changed. read more

When in the area Bean continues to be a regular stop for me and with my oldest now at UL he's a regular. He and I stopped by on a weekday for food and drinks, including bagels, sausages biscuit, turkey and swiss, hot chocolate and lattes. I enjoyed the sandwich. In fact my son ate half and I was still happy. It came with a side of chips. My lavender lattes are strong there, almost too much. I need to remember that and ask for less or try another syrup. When I took my first sip today I understood why people compare it to soap. My stops here tend to be quicker. I'm realizing this has more to do with the space and available seating than my schedule. It's not a space that's as comfortable to me so I don't crave to come and linger or meet people for conversation. Fairly easy to grab street parking nearby and no meters to pay. read more

As someone who loves trying new local coffee shops, I just moved closer to Germantown and had to try this super cute shop! I will say, quite simply, their coffee was unimpressive. It's ok coffee. I've gone multiple times trying so hard to like it but the coffee is just ok. I have to get flat whites because everything else is bland or I just know another spot in town that offers a better version. The ambiance is supposed to be hipster down home vibes, but come on -- mismatched wooden chairs and mid coffee isn't charming. I've always enjoyed going up to Bean when I'm out on a walk. It's a nice little coffee shop on the corner. Lately, I've had some issues with thier service. Today, there was a man who dropped his coffee. He informed the man behind the counter and he offered to clean it for the man behind the counter. The man behind the counter let him clean it. He proceeded to watch and hand him towels without taking control and cleanup the mess. I also had an issue with the wait time I had for a tea last week. There were several staff members there and they kept talking about music with each other while my tea sat behind the counter. I had to tell them that my drink was behind them. read more

Enjoy a latte and cookie while doing a bit of work. Bean is a cozy spot in Germantown with a surprisingly extensive menu and a bright, airy vibe. It was plenty quiet to do a little work, but the staff was pleasantly chatty with me and other guests giving off a laid back atmosphere. My latte was really good - nothing fancy but quality coffee, which is pretty hard to come by around here. The cookie was not baked in store, but was a delicious complement to my drink. Bean on Goss Avenue in Germantown is always a great place to grab a morning coffee and a quick breakfast, especially if you want to take it to go for your ride to Lexington. The coffee in my opinion beats Heine Brothers but a mile and the feel of a local neighborhood coffee shop is special. Picked up a cold brew which was incredibly smooth and a regular drip coffee with milk. So dative and a great wake me up. A bagel with hummus and overnight pays completed our breakfast order. Bean has a good assortment of lunch options as well. Be sure to stop by. And you couldn't ask for nicer and more accommodating servers...service is friendly, accurate and accommodating. The only drawback of Bean is that it is not accessible to someone who can not walk up a few stairs to enter the eatery. read more

Yum! Can't wait to spend more time here. I got the Veggie Deluxe bagel for lunch and a green tea with matcha and lemongrass tea for lunch. Everyone working was very helpful and nice. There were a lot do people chilling, hanging out, and working midday on a weekday - which is a great sign. I got my food to go and ended up toasting the bagel a little longer at home. If you haven't been to Bean, you're missing out on a great local joint in the heart of Louisville's Germantown. While catching up with a friend recently, I asked her if she had any new favorite places to go to. She suggested Bean, and we made our plans to meet there for a Saturday brunch. Located on the first floor of a quaint old building on a corner, the large picture windows give you a glimpse into the shop as you approach on the sidewalk. High ceilings, accentuated with light paint colors on the walls, and hardwood floors make the place feel airy and inviting. Several tables line the sidewalk for easy outdoor dining. We went inside, placed our orders, and while we sipped our drinks, I waited for my tasty quiche to be ready. There is a quiche of the day, both a vegetarian and an Omni/carnivore option, and I went with the bacon jalapeño quiche on that morning. It took a few minutes to heat up, but it was definitely worth the wait. A thick and fluffy quiche with nice bites of bacon and just the occasional sip of jalapeño hit the spot. The salad on the side rounded through meal out and made me feel just a tiny bit healthier. As we chatted, sipped, and nibbled on our brunch, we watched the world go by at the crossing of Goss and Texas. The busy corner was just the spot for people watching in the neighborhood. I really wanted to love Bean. It's a very cute local place that I'd love to support but my first visit left a lot to be desired for me. They weren't busy when I arrived but no one really welcomed me or acknowledged me. Having never been in before I wanted to look at the menu board for a minute so I did and then made eye contact with someone who came to take my order. I ordered the salami and cream cheese bagel and a caramel Latte. Someone else arrived and ordered after me but I didn't hear what they ordered. So when the woman making the food said "here's your bagel" and gestured towards both of us I assumed she meant mine since I had ordered first. She was a little bit snippy with me what she told me that it was actually the other person's and not mine because they had just ordered a plain untoasted bagel and that mine wasn't ready yet. No big deal that mine wasn't done first but I had no way to have known and I felt like she could have been a little nicer about it. Then after several more minutes my bagel was ready and I kept waiting for my coffee until I finally realized that there was a to go cup sitting on the counter. No one had called my name or said anything at all when it was ready so I have no clue how long it had been there. I asked if it was mine to be sure and they said it was and walked away. The bagel was very good and it was definitely something I would get again. The latte was different from other lattes I've had. I wouldn't say I'm a coffee connoisseur but I get the same few things at every place I go and they're all usually fairly similar but this was definitely a lot less sweet, almost bitter in fact and just seemed to lack flavor. It was also really small for the price. I didn't see sizes on the menu and I didn't specify a size so I'm not sure if they have multiple sizes but I definitely usually like a larger coffee in the morning. So for the not so welcoming feelings and not great coffee I'm going with two stars for now. Overall I probably need to give Bean a second chance and if I do I will definitely update my review. Bean is just the cutest little hipster coffee shop in Germantown. We were already in the area and were in need of some hot brew to fill our frozen (from the weather) spirits. This is a perfect place for hanging out, getting some work done, or to meet up with someone. It seems very small in the front, but they actually have a much larger room in the back with more seating! We were lucky to snag a couch in the back corner, where you can take a gander out of their garage door windows out into the neighborhood. They also had a bunch of awesome books laid out on the coffee table, including a Louisville history book that my boyfriend and I enjoyed perusing through while sipping on our lattes. When it comes to their coffee, the options are pretty simple. I went with a coconut latte and it was very tasty. Yeah, you do pay that hipster price just a bit, but I don't mind when you have friendly baristas and they make them well. I also noticed the homey vibe this place gives off. The girls working in the shop were hanging out, talking to customers, but were still attentive to those wanting to order. I liked that. They also have food too! If you're in need of a bigger meal, The Post and Four Pegs are just right down the street, making it super convenient to grab a bite. read more

You can even grab vintage clothing off a rack from employees! The space has plenty of natural lighting and tall ceilings for breath. You will sell local artist and occasional galleries, too! Had never been to Bean before yesterday morning even though it's one a street with some of my favorite other local spots. Colorful and quiet on the inside mixed with outdoor seating on a busy residential street corner makes for a great coffee shop atmosphere. I didn't think the food options would be worth trying out but I was pleasantly surprised! For just about $6, I got a salami bagel with cream cheese, onions, tomatoes, and sprouts. First review of 2020! Woop Woop SO - a coworker told me about Bean and I am extremely glad that she did. They have multiple different styles, brews and strengths of coffee. This is my first visit but they seem to have a lot of regulars. The baristas seemed to have known a lot of peoples orders. Coming from a barista background from a shop similar to this, that little fact makes me really happy. A lady with blue hair and a super edgy cut took my order and she was really nice and was patient with me...as it took what seemed like 32049 minutes to decide on what I wanted lol. I ended up with a TRADITIONAL macchiato, a Vietnamese coffee, and a Veggie Bagel Deluxe - coming to a total of $12.99. Not too shabby in my opinion. They also have new VEGAN SAMOSAS that I was extremely attempted to purchase as well lol next time. The macchiato was hot, and strong. Just the way I like it. I would have loved to add some sugar to it, but I was honestly just too lazy to get up. The Vietnamese coffee was a new one for me, and honestly it was a bit strange in flavor. It is a chilled beverage, brewed hot to order, mixed with some sweetened condensed milk (and other spices I think), then poured over ice. Like I said its pretty unique for me, but I enjoyed it very much. They have something called a "Sparkling Shelley" that I am just going to have to try next time. The bagel was delicious. Tomato and herb bagel with cream cheese, red onion, tomato, and sprouts. They use Nancy's Bagels, which I personally have never had before today...but I know a lot of Louisvillians love them, and they did not disappoint for me. The Veggie Bagel Deluxe was simply but tasty and fairly filling. They also have a variety of scones, croissants, muffins, etc. The music is more instrumental (today) and not too loud, nice for a working environment. They mostly bring your food/beverages out to you. Biodegradable straws made of corn! Lots of greenery, and seating. V nice, I am a V happy customer. Yay! I love Germantown. It's where all the hipsters hang out. I came with a friend at 9 on a Thursday morning and it wasn't busy. I saw a lady getting coffee to go and a dude reading at one of the tables. They seem to get regulars here as the barista knew some of the people who dropped by. It got kinda busy ish as people walked in and out with coffee and baked goods. Seems like this is the place to get your morning Joe. There was only one barista but she was pretty attentive to say hello whenever someone walked through the door. My friend and I both got the house coffee and split a tomato herb bagel, the barista's favorite. So good! I loved the flavor. Reminded me of pizza. The total for both of ours seemed pricey. The bagels were like $3 and they were tiny though! They come from Nancy's bagels but it seemed kind of expensive for such a small little thing. Anyway, cute place! I love the green walls, the quirky containers in which they placed all the plants and such, the unique mugs, and the whole ambience. Wide windows brought in a lot of natural light and some warmth in there. Parking is never stressful to find. I parked just on the street on the side of it. And make sure you clean up. I've been here a handful of times now and have enjoyed each drink I've had. Most recently, I had a coconut milk latte with honey added. YUM. Each time I've gotten the drink "for here" and sat with a book or just to simply sit and enjoy watching outside through the window. The lighting in the front room of the space is wonderful in the early to mid morning hours. You can tell a good neighborhood business by the interactions with regulars. It was fun to see people coming in and being greeted by name, orders being known when they walk in, etc. This is the staple interaction I look for in places I frequent. The reason I'm knocking a star off is due to the condescending attitude we received when ordering during our latest visit. The person I was with ordered a cappuccino on ice and the person taking our order laughed, gave a funny look, and said "Do you KNOW what a cappuccino is?" Unconventional order or not, it's the type of unfortunate interaction that would keep me from coming back if this had been my first visit. read more

The front room lets in a lot of natural light and has a dreamy feel of a coffee shop: sipping coffee on a stool by the window, watching the cars drive by on a cloudy day. Great place for a coffee and chat. The back room is more for groups, studying, and gettin work done. It's a somewhat mismatched space with different tables and chairs, but everyone's there to get something done. There aren't outlets at every table and some of the tables can be a bit on the small size. Gotta be space efficient on those tables. I like the space overall and after spending an afternoon studying here, I think I'd rather make it a "meet up for coffee" spot than be on my intense study grind. It all depends on your needs, really. ==The Drinks== Originally I wanted some Vietnamese coffee (aka crack coffee), but since they stick to the traditional notion of making it with condensed milk, I had to opt for something else. Germantown is really coming along, with one indicator being that it now has its own coffeehouse. And so far, it's hitting all of my must-haves for a coffeeshop: good coffee (obvs), relaxing and clean interior, friendly service, reliable wifi and an atmosphere that fits with chatting as well as working on your own. I tried out Bean last week, stopping by and working for a couple of hours before I had a meeting. The wifi info is clearly displayed in the main room of Bean. The music was your typical coffeehouse variety -- well-known indie rock from the early 2000s -- which I always enjoy listening to but is also easy to tune out. For my first drink, I ordered a Vietnamese drip iced coffee after watching the barista make a couple for another group. This coffee was rich and creamy, as you'd expect. I was happy that this wasn't overly sweet, with the cream. I will definitely be back for this. I also enjoyed the chai -- a fave of mine. And to-go, I ordered the watermelon berry mint icee, a drink special for the day. This was so refreshing. I've tried ice tea at many other local coffeeshops, but this was definitely a fun first. Loved the mix of watermelon with mint. Bean also has baked goods, which I'm looking forward to trying. And what makes it a roasting house? Well you can walk to the back, where there is extra seating, and see its large roasting equipment firsthand. I'd love to attend a class at Bean one day to learn a bit more about coffee. With its well-aged hardwood floors, white interior and beautiful wood tables, it has the comfy vibe you'd want in a coffeeshop. Having been a Gtown resident for almost a decade (before all the new development began), I'm so happy to see small, independent businesses like this one open in my former neighborhood! I took an old friend, who once lived down the street and now lives abroad, to check out this new coffeehouse in our old hood. The corner shop has lovely light and tons of charm. The decor is minimal, but welcoming. All things most folks look for in a cafe you're there to work, meet friends, or just grab a refreshment. We snagged a table and chatted with the owner about some of his beverages. I ordered my usual, an iced chai latte, and my pal got the cortado, a coffee she has frequently when at home in Ecuador. My iced chai was pretty (& a good size), but didn't have the spicy punch I look for in a top shelf chai. It was tasty, but not a wow. This happens quite a bit with iced chai as shops use a pre-made base which can become watered down with the steamed milk and ice. I think next time I may go with one of their homemade icees. The cortado came in a beautiful cup and received high marks. The folks next to us were having a snack form the shirt, food menu. Everyone looked super fresh and delicious (looked to be a caprese salad of sorts). Bakery items and bagels (from Nancy's bagels, I believe) are on offer at reasonable prices. Reason for the 2 stars is the poor and confrontational attitude of the manager (guy who came out from the back and literally shooed me away from the counter the second I pulled my mask down to take a sip of coffee). So I complied and put my mask back up and walked over to the window area to enjoy my coffee and take a few bites of sandwich. Again was told that masks have to be on at all times inside. Now if it was May of 2020 I could understand (even appreciate) the policy and quick verbal correction. But it's May of 2021 and most places are either reducing their mask mandate or illuminating it all together. To not even be able to lower your mask to take a sip or a bite of food... And then to be corrected in a rude dismissive tone. Unacceptable. I am new to town and was looking for a nice local coffee shop... This will not be it. read more

Shoutout to all my other Germantown/Schnitzelberg folks right in between the Sunergos locations, each of which is a 2-mile sweaty walk in the summer. Also, RIP Full Stops. Star #3: DISTANCING. Bean is taking social distancing pretty seriously. You can order indoors (with a mask), or order outside (preferably with mask). Baristas are masked and gloved. Star #4: DRINKS. Try the Sweet Brew, which is a cold brew with sweetened almond milk. Controversial choice: also try the Sparkling Shelly which is a tasty and gloriously *unsweetened* espresso and soda water. My partner is not a fan of this particular drink, but I stand by it. I also like bitter flavors, and he doesn't, so take that as it is! Star #5: DEMONSTRATIONS. Bean Roasting House and Cafe is a cute coffee shop located in Germantown. We live close by, but don't frequent this place. We've only been a few times, and each visit has been alright. Bean offers coffee, lattes, macchiatos, smoothies, bags of whole coffee beans, and food like overnight oats, fresh fruit, granola, yogurt, sandwiches, salads, pastries from Wiltshire Pantry, bagels from Nancy's Bagel Box, and goodies from Flora Vegan Treats. I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but I can usually find something I like at every coffee shop. Unfortunately, at Bean, I stick with ordering Elixir Kombucha. Of course this beverage is delicious! But, I'm disappointed that I have not found any beverages from Bean's own menu that I love. The food I've had at Bean has all been great, but none of it has been made in house. I typically opt for a Wiltshire Pantry croissant. The atmosphere of Bean is nice, it's clean and modern. There's plenty of seating inside and orders typically come up pretty quickly. Second time here and finally got to sit down, instead of getting a drink to-go! I came on a rainy Sunday afternoon, and boy, was it perfect! I LOVED everything about this place (minus the music choice haha a little too rock n roll for my productivity). I ordered the Sparkling Shelley (similar to Americano but sub the water with sparkling water!) and added the season, in-house apple honey (GET IT RN!). It was delightful, and I was grateful they did half caf. Service was super friendly by both the barista and the cashier. I can't believe this was my first time coming in to actually get work done! There are 3, 2-seater tables and 4 seater counter top area. There's also a dining area in the back, but I love the large windows by the cashiers. I also love that they have for-here cups!! Nobody does it anymore and it made me sad, but this place has glasses for drinking at the cafe- kudos! Great vibe, good drinks, and superb service! After a day of walking/hiking, The Mister and I were chilly and craving a caffeine fix! Yelp told me that Bean was only a mile away and off we went! The shop is definitely hipster and the atmosphere (and service) were very laid back. I was disappointed to learn that there was not a single sugar-free option for a latte or cappuccino. I went with a medium roast plain coffee. I was pleased to see that since we were going to have our coffee in-house that a non-disposable, real coffee mug was used (the mugs were an eclectic mix of mugs from many other venues and places!). The venue has two rooms. The front room has the counter where orders are placed, one table and approximately bar stools and a counter that looks out a large window onto the street. The back room is more homey with a couch and more tables. In the connecting hallway is the gender-neutral restroom. The restroom was very clean and on a table were Vagasil Emergency Contraceptive packages and condoms provided by the Louisville Doula Project!! What a wonderful offering! Both The Mister and I ordered a slice of quiche and both types were delicious! I suppose if I am in the area and desperate for coffee, I will return, but knowing that there are no sugar-free options, I would not go out of my way to return.
