San Diego Food Markets - Rockstar dole whip mix

San Diego Food Markets

I freaking love this market, Sat & Sun only, 10-4…read more What did I want to do for Mother's Day? Lane Field market! Walk along the Embarcadero & get a freeze on a hot day, stop by Chilanga's (the best booth there) & get my huitlacoche on. Live music, shade, delicious vendors, right across from the water. I did have a little detour from Chilanga's - while I was waiting for my spouse to park, I sat at a shady table with a woman who was telling me about the poke truck (Island Mike's) & explaining that her coworker ran it as a side hustle, and that the poke was delicious because he had lived in Hawaii. I agonized a bit - get my Chilanga's huitlacoche huarache - or try the poke? I eventually decided: it's Mother's Day, you can have ALL the things, just like at a buffet! So I went to Island Mike's first. They advertised Broke Da Mouth poke - and I was a little suspicious at first - cuz Island Mike's didn't look like a Hawaii native but a mainlander who spent some time there. BUT... I got my poke "island style" (furikake, sushi rice, and the poke - not lots of distractions like seaweed salad or ginger like in the "mainland style") - and it really was off the hook. Really fresh & delicious and perfectly made. YUM & YUM. $12 for one scoop (the smaller size) & very worth it. Of course I still needed my Chilanga's so then I got the huitlacoche huarache (a vegetarian taste of heaven - shredded lettuce, huitlacoche, Mexican cheese on a huarache (masa dough) & tried the mango passion fruit agua fresca. The huarache is huge and I'd already had the little poke, so I took most of it home to eat later. But it was just as yummy as I remembered. And the agua fresca is amazing. I'll still crave Chilanga's but now I'll crave Island Mike's too. I need to get down here more often because it is a super fun outing that is too good to waste on tourists!

There was live music and aa few food stalls. Good Eatz (filipino/hawaiian fusion) caught my eye mainly because they have a few Ube pastries (mochi, ube bar, etc). I first ordered the ube bar which passed the test so I went back to order the mochi. They also offer lumpia, spam musubi and chicken wing combo plates and pork dumplings.

Churros el Tigre - Small order with chocolate sauce on the side. A little undercooked, unfortunately.

So delish! This vendor is located at Las Americas Premium Outlets directly across the food court. Most days there's a bustling line of people waiting to order. However, service is typically made quick and easy by the efficiency of the staff. Staff are friendly and the vibe is lively! Today, we ordered the classic mini churros with lechera! Nothing beats that savory dough flavor, crispy on the outside, soft and airy on the inside, with an exaggerated amount of cinnamon-sugar coating! My daughter ordered her usual- the mangoneada! Need I say more! And my wife and son ordered a couple of delicious aguas frescas de limon and mango! Definitely come check these guys out! You won't leave disappointed!

Thank you so much for this incredible experience. We had about 200 guests and our service was for 2 hours of unlimited, freshly made churros. We had issues with our regular food vendor, so we encouraged our guests to have dessert first. And this team was ready to serve. I was also surprised that they included ice cream with our churros. That was unexpected but very much appreciated. Our guests RAVED about the churros and it was easily a highlight of our party. Our church has used this same vendor MANY times, and they did not disappoint us at all. Not just saying this...but these are some of the BEST churros I have ever had.

It's very much self service here, you order either at a tablet or through your phone via QR code. We got a Mac and cheese dog, chili dog, SDfoodie dog, and the California. Along with the corn and cheese fries. I had the chili dog which is delicious and the California which I loved! The hot dogs are great quality and so good! I also love the cheese and fries, soooo tasty. The bun was a little big for me, but my fiancee loved it. It was a large brioche bun that was toasted nicely. The prices were around 9-11 for a dog which isn't horrible. If your in the mood for a fun and filling hot dog, this is a great choice!

I even remember when it was a participating vendor at a now defunct local food festival. Their current location is a corner shack in the East Village section of downtown next to The Church by The Lost Abbey. Everything in this area involved curbside metered parking or a paid surface lot. The shack was part of a large courtyard with multiple picnic tables for seating. Cornhole boards and a flat screen TV were set up for entertainment. You order using a tablet next to the service window. The menu used to be strictly bacon-wrapped hot dogs (i.e. Sonoran style). It has now expanded to include burgers, sides, appetizers, and desserts. A fountain station had dispensers for sodas, lemonade, and agua frescas. The hot dogs were divided into two sections, Classic and Signature. I selected two of the classics for my takeout order. The first was a Baja (grilled onions, pico, chipotle, avocado crema) and the second was a TJ Style (grilled onions, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, ketchup). The sweet bun used to hold everything resembled that used for a lobster roll. The flavor combinations were hearty and not spicy which was what I preferred. The grilled onions added some char and texture to the jumbo beef hot dogs. What has changed significantly over time were the prices. Each of my choices cost $8.99. Some of the other varieties were as high as $12 which is insane for a loaded hot dog. I did appreciate the bacon wrapping to the franks, but I can't see myself coming to East Village that often for these products because there are plenty of diverse dining options that are more satisfying in this part of downtown.
