This bbq is absolutely outstanding. I'm no expert, though I've had BBQ in the Carolinas, Texas, and Tennessee and this is as good as any of it. I had brisket with Mac, and cole slaw. Girlfriend had pulled chicken over Mac with a side of potato salad and it was all top notch. Additionally, this guy is a real character who clearly loves what he's doing. Get here! read more

This one man gig is UNREAL! We got the pulled pork sandwich and pulled chicken sandwich. Both were unbelievable. The pork was fresh and juicy. Just the right amount of fat to give it flavor, but not to the point where the sandwich was inedible. The chick was also tender and juicy. We got a few sides of Mac n cheese and it was a hit. He tops it with fresh cheese which is a nice touch. I'd kill for one of these in Massachusetts. The price point at this place compared to back home is amazing. We would've paid almost double for the same meal back home, with half the quality. Check this place out it you're in the Winni area! read more

Holy crap. Don't judge this place by its exterior - the guy behind the stove is a master. He was running this place by himself when we stopped by and gave us some sample to try and very yummy! We went with the whole rack of ribs, brisket plate (you get sides with that) and a bowl of the pulled pork chili. The ribs were falling off the bones - we just sprinkled some seasoning and bbq sauce and oh mah gawd. The brisket takes him 30 hours to cook to perfection and only 5 minutes for us to devour. The little mini muffin cornbread is also a must try - he puts honey on top and I think that's the secret. Overall this is a little gem on the road side - if you happen to be driving by this; give it a try! He's open until end of November. read more

We have been eating here since he started his 1 man show. The food is always excellent. From reading some of the 1 star reviews, I would say if your from Texas than maybe you wont like it HOWEVER We think it is delicious, reasonably priced, Large portions. Scott is a great guy who simply makes excellent food . Try it!!! read more

Felt save because of the ole tofu outdoor seating. Not crowded. Delicious food. We had pulled pork, pulled chicken, ribs, Mac and cheese and beans. All was amazing. Kids were happy too. Def worth stopping for this hidden gem. read more

I never write reviews. But Scott is a gastronomic genius. My boyfriend eats meat-- I don't. So I never thought I'd be the one writing the review but the food is freaking phenomenal. Coming from NYC, we did NOT expect NH to blow us away food-wise. But it did. Best baked beans I've ever eaten and his seasoning was so good, we bought a couple to take home. My boyfriend could not stop raving about the brisket. So we went back for ribs, pulled pork, pulled pork Mac n cheese and potato salad. Apparently one of the best briskets he's ever had. Better than anywhere in Tennessee, Texas, either of the Carolinas and anywhere else we've been. Scott is such a sweetheart too. He made me things off-menu just because I didn't eat meat and it was absolutely amazing. The Mac and cheese with his red seasoning literally disappeared on my plate-- and I am NOT a big eater. We need to get this guy on Chopped ASAP. Can't recommend this place enough. #teamScott read more

I've been here 3 times now and each visit was delicious! Great prices and the best flavors. The food is so good and juicy. Ribs are my fave, but pulled-pork is amazing too. Be sure to get a side of Baked beans and potato salad. Don't skip the Mac and Cheese bowl either. Open seasonally, so be sure to visit when you are in the area! read more

Food was amazing! Best BBQ EVER!!! Owner was extremely nice and friendly. The ribs literally fell off the bone, they were so soft I could eat them with a fork. The brisket was my bf's first brisket and will be his last because we will only be going her for bbq from now on! Also, the mac n cheese was so good and don't even get me started on the corn bread. Best corn bread of my life, my favorite part was that it has a slight hint of lemon. read more

Awesome Food. The owner is super nice. Definitely will be a must do every time I come to New Hampshire.

This might be the best bbq I've ever had, pulled pork with spicy tomato was unbelievable. Very juicy meat, sauce made fresh for each customer, friendly owner, gave us samples. To all of those bad southern bbq places I've been to, shame on you. This NH bbq should make you weep with shame. read more

We pulled in to The shak 30minutes after it said they were closed online but he still served us no problem. Then he took time to help us find what we wanted, showing us the different cuts. he also Let us sample some sauces/meat free of charge. I got pulled pork and my friend got the brisket plate. The meat could not have been any better, but you add his house sauce to it and it will blow your mind. The only complaint I would have about his business, is that it's too far from my house! read more

Pouring rain - lovely little Shack- some of the best barbecue I've had in the area. We were just driving through and pulled in and with all those great Yelp reviews, decided to stay and I am so glad we did a quote from our meal " the baked beans didn't taste how I expected them to- they tasted beyond my expectations ." Friendly service kids are happy, Mama's happy and dad is happy! read more

The best food we had in the Lakes region. The owner is very friendly and takes tremendous pride in food - not just the meats, but also the ingredients and preparation of the sauces. Teriyaki sauce on pulled pork just doesn't sound right, but I'll give it a try next time. The tomato based BBQ and apple cider vinegar sauces were fantastic. We ordered the applewood smoked chicken breast and pulled pork were exceptional. Baked beans were very good, but I wouldn't order the mac and cheese or potato salad again. I will try the coleslaw and corn bread next time. Great food and huge portion sizes with two servings from each plate. Highly recommend! read more

Absolutely delicious! Owner and chef, Scott, not only gave friendly and amazing service, but also served the most delicious food. Really great spot, will definitely be returning. High recommended! read more

So delicious, we went there on our way from new york to Mount washington and found it through Yelp. You will be surprised how delicious everything is! We had ribs abd brisket both very good. We will come back for sure read more

We were looking for a place to eat in our way up to the mountain, and stopped by here because of the reviews. Well deserved! We had a half rack of ribs, cornbread, mac and cheese, and beans. Ribs were deliciously smoked and the homemade bbq sauce had great balance. Corn bread muffin was sweet and fluffy. Mac and cheese reminded me of cheese whiz meets kraft - very homey. Beans were delicious and reminded me of good chili. He was very kind with us, especially since it was our first time. Regular patrons were also there and raves about his food. If we're in the neighborhood again, we have a great place to stop by! Things that were helpful to know: - it's a food truck by the road, so don't be shocked. Doles our delicious food, so worth it! - there's a water jug and paper towels at the condiments table for clean up afterwards - owner is super sweet and passionate read more

Visiting the area and got a recommendation for this place from a local. You never think of New England for bbq. It's always lobster lobster lobster and we love that a lot too, but today we were feeling bbq. We knew this place was as the name suggests, a shack in a field, which frankly made it that much more appealing. Places like that often have the best food and this one definitely does. Pulled up in our small ev van and met the owner. He was very friendly and we talked for a bit once we ordered. Got a table with an umbrella and chilled. Had a great bbq meal consisting of fall off the bone brisket and equally tender and delicious pork ribs along with Mac and cheese, coleslaw, and cornbread.. All excellent. We do regret not trying the beans. Next time. Can't recommend this place enough ! read more

Overall, a really nice experience and a good meal. Definitely not a pretty place to look at initially, but I've been to waaay sketchier places that had excellent food. Owner operator loves to talk about what he does and is more than happy to share ordering tips and samples! The menu is a bit complex and difficult to decipher (basically a lot of stuff written on a few white boards with some pictures taped to the walls), and I was astounded to hear that at one point, there were over 20 sauces on the menu. You order by the plate, not the pound, and sides are $1 a piece, no big deal. I was definitely put off by the meat coming out of the refrigerator, getting sliced up, and being reheated with sauce in a frying pan, not what I have experienced at other places or expected. The food was a mixed bag, but I will say the flavors were excellent. The brisket was pretty poorly trimmed and was more than half fat (maybe due to available meat and no fault of the shak's, but still a bit annoying to pay for something you eat less than half of), but was tender and well seasoned. Sauces are excellent, unique, and homemade. Corn bread was delicious, kielbasa was excellent, coleslaw also very good, but mac and cheese looked and tasted a bit like pasta with movie theater nacho cheese on it. Lots of other things on the menu we did not try but sounded good. To sum up, a pretty sweet grungy atmosphere with good but not great food prepared in a very atypical way. Worth a try if you're in the area, but I wouldn't make a trip. read more

Delicious!!! We stopped here on our way home from hiking in the mountains, right off the highway. The great reviews are all well deserved! We tried the brisket and chicken, as well as some mac and beans. It was all sooo good! And the owner is very kind! Definitely a hidden spot to check out :) read more

I gave one star as zero was not an option! Stopped here the other day to get BBQ for lunch. The owner could not have been nastier. He kept yelling at me and asking if I saw what I was I was inquiring about on one of his 20 scribbled menus. At one point I asked him if he was trying to be funny or just rude. Walked away without buying a thing. Turned left out of the driveway and drove 1/2 mile up the road to the Traveling Texas Smoke Shop - owned by a super nice couple who make delicious BBQ. Do not waste your breath, time or money at the BBQ Shak!! read more

This man is an artist. Tried the ribs, beef brisket, and even a 1/4 lb dog. Wifey had the pulled pork. Everything was fantastic. Who woulda thunk there'd be some high quality bbq on such a shabby lot off Rte 104? So sorry we took so long to pull in and try it!! read more

Got brisket plate and shredded pork sandwich. Food was so amazing, we took leftover home and it was still amazing!

Best pulled pork i've ever had. Cheap meals, great service and better food. 10/10 would recommend.

Seriously some of the best BBQ you will find anywhere, not just in NE.

Wow, this place is great. We've driven by it many times. Based on the reviews we decided to stop in and we were not disappointed. He had me try a bunch of things and everything was great. We got the chicken, brisket, and pulled pork, along with a few sides. The chicken (with his sauce on it) was top shelf. Brisket and pork were great, but the chicken really stood out. Corn bread and slaw also were particularly good. We'll definitely be back. read more

This roadside stand is our favorite place to get BBQ. I liked that it was set back from the road a bit. There were tables with umbrellas and chairs for outside seating. We were warmly welcomed by the owner/BBQ master and once he discovered it was our first visit he started handing out samples of everything which we really appreciated. We ordered the pulled chicken and pulled pork sandwiches with a side of potato salad and coleslaw. The coleslaw is homemade and hand shredded from whole heads of cabbage. It was delicious and included the traditional celery seed. The meats were both moist and juicy with a perfect amount of smokiness. The sandwiches were served on a wedge of French bread which seemed the right choice to hold up to the pile of meat. The pricing was very reasonable. No gimmicks here..just great BBQ cooked and served by a fellow who is quite passionate about it. We will be back! read more

Went here for the third time with friends who didn't understand BBQ and boy did I regret it. Just a warning that you're going to be annoyed if you bring these kinds of people here because their lack of BBQ knowledge will prevent them from looking past the quirky exterior. Chicken had terrible texture beware. Flavor of the ribs are decent but definitely not fall off the bone had to much chew for my liking. The Brisket saved the day but had a strange sweet tomato like sauce on them. After paying 20 for a brisket plate and a side of Mac and cheese you would think you would be full but I left the "shak" still hungry read more

Love at first bite and it only got better! As a native Texan I have been let down by most "BBQ" places in NH, but Scott knows what he's doing in the pit. Welcoming, cheap prices, and delicious. Can't ask for more read more

Saw this place as I was driving to the American Classic Arcade Museum at Funspot. My wife and son were hiking in the mountains, figured I'd pick them up some food on the way back. Boy, was that worth it. Full rack of ribs (half with their BBQ sauce, half dry) and a link of Smoked Keilbasa drenched in BBQ sauce. Best BBQ I've had in a long long time Also had a sample of the brisket, delicious. And the corn meal muffins were fantastic (they have lemon in them, they're almost a dessert!)
