Oh my Lord, we finally have a fabulous brunch spot in the north side of Portland! It not only has beinets and cornbread eggs Benedict but it also has live music every Thursday, Friday(openmic;) Saturday then also trivia and other mingle activities to do at this great local Family restaurant w a bar for all those local neighborhood evening gathering opportunities!

I absolutely love the Bayou Kitchen on Deering Ave, so when I found out there was the Bayou Kitchen on Auburn Ave, I was so excited! Closer to home! They just opened up a month or so ago. Checked this place out on Sunday and I was not disappointed. Menu is exactly the same but the space is bigger and the vibe is totally different, a little more calm for a person like me. I loved it! The service was great. Yes, a little slow but I didn't mind. My husband and I just read and enjoyed each other's company. I met the restaurant Manager and he was so kind! We met the owner too, he shook our hand. What a lovely man. Check this place out! Totally worth it! The owner mentioned they have live music during the week and some fun events to bring the community together, that's super cool! Sounds like you can have dinner here too? Maybe open later hours?

I really wanted to like this place better. A really big menu, lots of Southern specialties and a nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, the service was abysmal and the food was not great. The highlights were the cornbread, the beignets, and the grits. The beignets were New Orleans-caliber. The red beans and rice looked to have been put together and refrigerated, and then microwaved, which I saw from our seat. The pork on top and the beans were very dry. The fried eggs came out "dirty," looking like they were cooked on a part of the grill with lots of other food, and it retained that taste and looked "dirty."

Cold and dry pancake with ice cold butter. Grrr...

The hours posted say 9pm online and at 5pm it's closed. Nothing like the original bayou kitchen!

I feel like this is a spot you always know you'll have a good meal and great for either breakfast…read moreor lunch. Lots of options and great if people in your party want mix of breakfast and lunch type offerings. They have yummy sides including potatoes or my fave the grits and add cheese. Red beans and rice may be an option as well. For your bread option you can also choose cornbread. Obviously not a lot of Cajun/New Orleans type food in Maine so this is always a nice chsnge. The jambalaya and gumbo are great. There are crawfish options as well. I dont think they have po boys, beignets or oysters though. Blackboard specials are usually great as well. I almost always get one. Usually there's an egg type dish, sweet pancake type option snd sandwich/burger option. No Crystal hot sauce but lots of yummy Maine hot sauces, which are great on the cornbread. Street parking is all around and there is a pay lot behind the restaurant. Big Sky Bread is across the street. We like to walk over after to pick up a yummy treat or breakfast goodies for the next day.

New Orleans-style food in Portland?! You bet. The Bayou Kitchen is a slice of the South, right here…read morein Maine. I won't lie, I was a bit skeptical at first, but after a handful of visits, I can confidently say I'm a fan. This no-frills, diner-style restaurant fills my soul -- and my belly -- in all the best ways. The portions are huge (we actually had to take some home once, and we're not usually those people), the Bloody Marys are strong, and the coffee seems to be endless. The service is always great too, in a way that genuinely reminds me of the South -- and I mean that as a compliment. I've had their (humongous) omelets, homemade cornbread (so good), andouille sausage, grits, jambalaya... basically half the menu by now. The portions, as mentioned, are generous, but I think the prices reflect that (most dishes range from $16-$20 before any add-ons; ie replacing sides). The flavors are usually on point, and everything is pretty delicious, though I've had a few semi-misses -- the grits and jambalaya were a little bland on one occasion. Nothing a little hot sauce couldn't fix, and thankfully, they've got plenty of that! As others have mentioned, they don't take reservations and it can get packed on weekends, but it's worth the wait. From the moment you walk in, you're transported to a place like no other in Maine -- and that, plus the food, will keep us coming back.

The restaurant is larger than it looks since there's a second seating area too. I'd recommend the Flight of mini lobster rolls (3x 2oz lobster rolls), which can be chilled or warmed. Prices are fair, at about $20 a lobster roll. Their ghee butter add another level to their lobster rolls and they don't skimp on meat! Definitely try out the Highroller and maybe get some of their iconic merch.

We ended up taking out order to a park nearby that had benches so it worked out. Me and my friend shared a flight, where it included 3 lobster rolls with 2 oz. of lobster and we chose the jalapeño mayo, lime mayo, and lobster ghee ones. My favorite one was probably the jalapeño mayo because I loved the kick, but all three were delicious. I would definitely recommend getting the flight since the rolls are smaller and you get to try the different sauces.

That's what Scales was like for me, busy, loud, unpleasant, and somewhere I hope I never have to go back and experience again. Reservation or not you have to line up like sheep for slaughter. Heaven forbid anyone in your party is running late because none of you will be seated until everyone is there. Super fun!!! When we were seated, I had the server station a couple feet behind me with staff calling loudly to one another. The expensive wine they served us was bad. Should have been sent back. The lobster bisque had an unpleasant taste, was overpoweringly creamy, and what little lobster was in it was not fresh and was mushy. I can't even remember what I had for a main course (Maine course?). Unremarkable. One of the salads with blue cheese in it was okay. Some of my compatriots got the stew which is a bouillabase type dish with various shellfish and some fish in it along with a tomato base with a little kick to it. Not bad. The desserts are solid. Can't go wrong with a sundae. They also have Indian pudding which is a regional dish and interesting to try. Not sure if it needs to be renamed for current norms? Other people in our group enjoyed the meal. Lining up and standing around waiting to get into hyped up noisy places with mediocre expensive food, some of it nearly inedible in this case, is always in fashion somewhere. Have at it. I'm out.
